Information of the maximum Doppler frequency enable to optimize many channel-adaptive techniques and radio resource management methods for mobile radio communication systems. In this paper, we propose two maximum Doppler frequency estimators which are based on the level crossing rate(LCR) and the covariance function (COV). To eliminate the effect of additive noise, we analyze the conditions for the estimators independent of the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) and implement the conditions with a simple downsampling process. The proposed methods achieve good SNR-independent performance.

The performance of underwater acoustic communication is greatly affected by multipath propagation and Doppler spread. This paper proposes a new communication technique, the Triangle Spread Carrier (TSC) technique, by modifying the existing Sweep Spread Carrier (SSC) technique that is strong in a multipath propagation environment. The proposed TSC technique is a form in which the up-chirp and down-chirp signals have repeated carriers, and each correlation function characteristic is used to estimate and correct the Doppler shift frequency of the receiving signal. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed TSC technique, we present the results of simulations using underwater channel simulators and sea trial conducted in the East Sea. When demodulating using only the estimated Doppler shift frequency as a result of the sea trial, the uncoded bit error rate was up to 0.194, but when the proposed method was applied, the uncoded bit error rate was reduced to 0.001.

In Japan, high-speed ground transportation service using linear motors at speeds of 500 km/h is scheduled to begin in 2027. To accommodate 5G services in trains, a subcarrier spacing frequency of 30 kHz will be used instead of the typical 15 kHz subcarrier spacing to mitigate Doppler effects in such high-speed transport. Furthermore, to increase the cell size of the 5G mobile system, multiple base station antennas will transmit identical downlink (DL) signals to form an expanded cell size along the train rails. In this situation, the forward and backward antenna signals are Doppler-shifted in opposite directions, respectively, so the receiver in the train may suffer from estimating the exact Channel Transfer Function (CTF) for demodulation. In a previously published paper, we proposed a channel estimator based on Delay and Doppler Profiler (DDP) in a 5G SISO (Single Input Single Output) environment and successfully implemented it in a signal processing simulation system. In this paper, we extend it to 2×2 MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) with spatial multiplexing environment and confirm that the delay and DDP based channel estimator is also effective in 2×2 MIMO environment. Its simulation performance is compared with that of a conventional time-domain linear interpolation estimator. The simulation results show that in a 2×2 MIMO environment, the conventional channel estimator can barely achieve QPSK modulation at speeds below 100 km/h and has poor CNR performance versus SISO. The performance degradation of CNR against DDP SISO is only 6dB to 7dB. And even under severe channel conditions such as 500km/h and 8-path inverse Doppler shift environment, the error rate can be reduced by combining the error with LDPC to reduce the error rate and improve the performance in 2×2 MIMO. QPSK modulation scheme in 2×2 MIMO can be used under severe channel conditions such as 500 km/h and 8-path inverse Doppler shift environment.

It is important to localize trains precisely for the purpose of controlling them and there have been many studies designed to accomplish this without the need for wayside systems. Since trains run on fixed railway lines, it is possible to search in one direction to localize them. Moreover, it is also possible to know the shape of the line in advance. In the case of high speed trains, their speed and, therefore, their Doppler frequency is relatively high and the railway line is either linear or circular with a large radius. In this study, we utilize these features and propose a train localization method using the Doppler frequency of the signals transmitted from two points (base stations). We derive localization equations for a linear line, circular line, and mixed line (linear plus circular) respectively. Though Doppler radars are usually used to measure speed, the proposed method obtains the location information and the speed successively using the ratio of the doppler frequencies of two signals without knowing the location information or the speed. Computer simulations are performed to show the variation of the estimation error according to the train's location and the measurement error level. The conditions required to obtain the target error level and the increase in the estimation error according to the measurement error are compared between the proposed and conventional methods. The results show the superior performance and robustness of the proposed method.

In digital video broadcasting-terrestrial (DVB-T), which is the European digital terrestrial television standard, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted for signal transmission. The main reasons using OFDM are to increase the robustness against the frequency selective fading and impulse noise, and to use available bandwidth efficiently. However, channel variation within an OFDM symbol destroys orthogonality between subcarriers, resulting in inter-carrier interference (ICI), which increases an error floor in proportional to maximum Doppler spread. This paper provides an ICI analysis in both time and frequency domains while existing literatures analyze the ICI effects mainly in frequency domain and proposes the algorithms that estimate the channel impulse response and channel variation using least square (LS) algorithm which is the most simple channel estimation technique. And we propose adaptive channel estimation algorithm that estimates the velocity of terminals. The simulation results show that proposed algorithm has similar performance with about 1.5% computational complexity of noise and ICI reduction LS algorithm in low speed environments.

In this paper, we propose a velocity-adaptive channel estimation scheme using the simple zero-forcing technique in the frequency domain. Channel estimation is performed by removing frequency components that are higher than the maximum Doppler frequency in the received signal. The proposed scheme can be extended to the combined estimation scheme for channel coefficients and mobile velocity using one FFT/IFFT module. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms conventional schemes for a wide range of mobile velocities($3{\sim}300\;Km/h$). Finally, the MSE for the proposed channel estimation scheme is analyzed.

In OFDM systems, mobile channel degrades the system performance seriously. Therefore, channel estimation technique is required to compensate for the degradation from the channel effects. However, conventional channel estimations in frequency domain induce ICI which is induced from Doppler frequency. In addition, a linear interpolation method causes inaccurate channel estimation. In order to minimize the effect of the interference and interpolation error, the proposed method combines LS method and Kalman filtering algorithm. Channel impulse response is adaptively tracked by Kalman filtering based on the information from LS estimator. Simulation results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed channel estimation over mobile channel environment. Simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively compensate for channel degradation.

When measuring the radiated noise of an underwater vehicle, range information between acoustic source and receiver is an important evaluating factor, but it cannot use GPS. There is a method of using the cross correlation for finding the range of the acoustic source instead of the GPS. However, this method has heavy computational loads. This paper proposes a fast Fourier transform based method with a relatively small amount of computation to estimate the range of a source. The proposed method estimates Doppler frequencies of CW signals received at multiple receivers by fast Fourier transform and estimates the source range by comparing theoretical Doppler frequencies map previously calculated by a receiver position and source depth information. Simulation and lake trial were performed to verify the performance.
Although conventional OFDM/QAM modulation scheme using guard interval is robust to channel induced ISI (Inter-Symbol Interference) in time-domain, it is very sensitive to ICI (Inter-Carrier Interference) due to doppler effect in frequency domain. OFDM/OQAM-IOTA modulation scheme utilizes IOTA (Isotropic Orthogonal Transform Algorithm) filter that has orthogonality in time and frequency domain so that it is robust to delay spread and doppler effect. OFDM/OQAM-IOTA system can increase bandwidth effeciency since it does not use guard interval. In this paper, we show the structure of OFDM/OQAM-IOTA and perfect channel estimation scheme for OFDM/OQAM-IOTA system. We also compare OFDM/OQAM-IOTA system and OFDM/QAM system in AWGN and 1-path Rayleigh fading channel. Simulation results show that OFDM/OQAM system outperforms OFDM/QAM system.

We apply the Bayesian matching pursuit (BMP) algorithm to the estimation of time-frequency selective channels in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. By exploiting prior statistics and sparse characteristics of propagation channels, the Bayesian method provides a more accurate and efficient detection of the channel status information (CSI) than do conventional sparse channel estimation methods that are based on compressive sensing (CS) technologies. Using a reasonable approximation of the system model and a skillfully designed pilot arrangement, the proposed estimation scheme is able to address the Doppler-induced inter-carrier interference (ICI) with a relatively low complexity. Moreover, to further reduce the computational cost of the channel estimation, we make some modifications to the BMP algorithm. The modified algorithm can make good use of the group-sparse structure of doubly selective channels and thus reconstruct the CSI more efficiently than does the original BMP algorithm, which treats the sparse signals in the conventional manner and ignores the specific structure of their sparsity patterns. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed Bayesian estimation has a good performance over rapidly time-varying channels.
