  • In this paper, we propose a performance-enhanced object recognition by using nonlinear 3D correlator based on pixel restoration. In the proposed method, elemental images of the 3D target that are partially occluded by a foreground object are picked up and transformed into sub-images. By using the block-matching algorithm, the occluded target regions of each sub-image are estimated and removed. After that, the missing pixels in each sub-image are reestablished by using the pixel-restoration method. Finally, through the nonlinear cross-correlations between the reconstructed reference and the target plane images, the improved object recognition can be performed. To show the feasibility of the proposed method, some preliminary experiments are carried out and results are presented by comparing the conventional method.

  • The human cytochrome P450 2J2 catalyzes an epoxygenase reaction to oxidize various fatty acids including arachidonic acid. In this study, three recombinant enzyme constructs of P450 2J2 were heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli and their P450 proteins were successfully purified using a $Ni^{2+}$-NTA affinity column. Deletion of 34 amino acid residues in N-terminus of P450 2J2 enzyme (2J2-D) produced the soluble enzyme located in the cytosolic fraction. The enzymatic analysis of this truncated protein indicated the typical spectral characteristics and functional properties of P450 2J2 enzyme. P450 2J2-D enzymes from soluble fraction catalyzed the oxidation reaction of terfenadine to the hydroxylated product. However, P450 2J2-D enzymes from membrane fraction did not support the P450 oxidation reaction although it displayed the characteristic CO-binding spectrum of P450. Our finding of these features in the N-terminal modified P450 2J2 enzyme could help understand the biological functions and the metabolic roles of P450 2J2 enzyme and make the crystallographic analysis of the P450 2J2 structure feasible for future studies.

  • Steroid sulfatase (STS) is responsible for the conversion of estrone sulfate to estrone that can stimulate growth in endocrine-dependent tumors such as prostate cancer. Although STS is considered as a therapeutic target for the estrogen-dependent diseases, cellular function of STS are still not clear. Previously, we found that tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$ significantly enhances steroid sulfatase expression in PC-3 human prostate cancer cells through PI3K/Akt-dependent pathways. Here, we studied whether bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) which are known to induce TNF-${\alpha}$ may increase STS expression. Treatment with LPS in PC-3 cells induced STS mRNA and protein in concentration- and time-dependent manners. Using luciferase reporter assay, we found that LPS enhanced STS promoter activity. Moreover, STS expression induced by LPS increased PC-3 tumor cell migration determined by wound healing assay. We investigated that LPS induced IL-6 expression and IL-6 increased STS expression. Taken together, these data strongly suggest that LPS induces STS expression through IL-6 pathway in human prostate cancer cells.

  • Among the several options to solve PWR spent fuel accumulation problem in Korea, the dry storage method could be the most realistic and applicable solution in the near future. As the basic objectives of dry storage are to prevent a gross rupture of spent fuel during operation and to keep its retrievability until transportation, at the same time the importance of a spent fuel integrity evaluation that can estimate its condition at the final stage of dry storage is very high. According to the national need and technology progress, two representative nations of spent fuel dry storage, the USA and Japan, have established different system temperature criteria, which is the only controllable factor in a dry storage system. However, there are no technical criteria for this evaluation in Korea yet, it is necessary to review the previously well-organized methodologies of advanced countries and to set up our own domestic evaluation direction due to the nation's need for dry storage. To satisfy this necessity, building a domestic spent fuel test database should be the first step. Based on those data, it is highly recommended to compare domestic data range with foreign results, to build our own criteria, and to expand on evaluation work into recently issued integrity problems by using a comprehensive integrity evaluation code.

  • During the last three decades, South Korean nuclear power plants have discharged about 5,950 tons of spent fuel and the maximum burn-up reached 55 GWd/MTU in 2002. This study was performed to support the development of Korean dry spent fuel storage alternatives. First, we chose V5H-$17{\times}17$ and KSFA-$16{\times}16$ as representative domestic spent fuels, considering current accumulation and the future generation of the spent fuels. Examination reveals that their average burn-ups have already increased from 33 to 51 GWd/MTU and from 34.8 to 48.5 GWd/MTU, respectively. Evaluation of the fuel characteristics shows that at the average burn-up of 42 GWd/MTU, the oxide thickness, hydrogen content, and hoop stress ranged from $30{\sim}60{\mu}m$, 250 ~ 500 ppm, and 50 ~ 75 MPa, respectively. But when burn-up exceeds 55 GWd/MTU, those characteristics can increase up to 100 ${\mu}m$, 800 ppm, and 120 MPa, respectively, depending on the power history. These results demonstrate that most Korean spent nuclear fuels are expected to remain within safe bounds during long-term dry storage, however, the excessive hoop stress and hydrogen concentration may trigger the degradation of the spent fuel integrity early during the long-term dry storage in the case of high burn-up spent fuels exceeding 45 GWd/MTU.

  • In this paper we propose an improved version of the computational integral imaging reconstruction (CIIR) for visualizing a partially occluded object by utilizing an image inpainting technique. In the proposed method the elemental images for a partially occluded three-dimensional (3D) object are recorded through the integral imaging pickup process. Next, the depth of occlusion within the elemental images is estimated using two different CIIR methods, and the weight mask pattern for occlusion is generated. After that, we apply our image inpainting technique to the recorded elemental images to fill in the occluding area with reliable data, using information from neighboring pixels. Finally, the inpainted elemental images for the occluded region are reconstructed using the CIIR process. To verify the validity of the proposed system, we carry out preliminary experiments in which faces are the objects. The experimental results reveal that the proposed system can dramatically improve the quality of a reconstructed CIIR image.

  • Antibiotic resistance has emerged as a global threat to modern healthcare systems and has nullified many commonly used antibiotics. β-Lactam antibiotics are among the most successful and occupy approximately two-thirds of the prescription antibiotic market. They inhibit the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer in the bacterial cell wall by mimicking the D-Ala-D-Ala in the pentapeptide crosslinking neighboring glycan chains. To date, various β-lactam antibiotics have been developed to increase the spectrum of activity and evade drug resistance. This review emphasizes the three-dimensional structural characteristics of β-lactam antibiotics regarding the overall scaffold, working mechanism, chemical diversity, and hydrolysis mechanism by β-lactamases. The structural insight into various β-lactams will provide an in-depth understanding of the antibacterial efficacy and susceptibility to drug resistance in multidrug-resistant bacteria and help to develop better β-lactam antibiotics and inhibitors.

  • The Jeungsan(1871-1909)'s revelation is the important meaning. Jeungsan hands down the two revelation for solution of Chosun postscript problem and presentation of Utopia. One time Suwun(1824~1864) is handed down and afterwords Jeongsan(1895-1958) after Jeungsan's Hwachon at 1917. Two revelations accomplish the day of the Jeungsan in public but the character is the countenance. The Jeungsan's revelation to Suwun solves present generation problems, the Jeungsan revelation to Jeongsan is continuously to do the day of the Jeungsan even after Hwachon. The Jeungsan stepped on the failure of the Donghak and on the upper lifestyle with the Cham-Donghag it opened the different side. The Cham-Donghag is concerned about the future Chosun to be the first-class country and Chosun Haewon is related with Danju Haewon. Danju Haewon is to be a fifty years religous study of Jeongsan. The Jeungsan's Gangse is to accomplish the Sungsajaein and it actualizes the appearance of Dotonggunja. Jeongsan is trying to do the religious activity about Sungsajaein and Dotonggunja as the Daedumok. The Jeungsan starts from revelation to the Suwun, to accomplish thought of the Cham-Donghag after Hwachon. The Jeungsan continuously has handed revelation led from religion activity, let Jeongsan do fifty years religious study. In the long run, it completes the fact that it accomplishes the outer space and the Chosun society of new setup, and a sacred religious work has been arranged the advocate of the Cham-Donghag through the Jeongsan by Woodang(1917-1996)'s Daesoonjinrihoe(1969).

  • The politico-economic waives of Western imperialism and colonialism, along with Christianity, affected East Asia's geopolitical landscape in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While the Korean people (of the Joseon Dynasty) witnessed the incompetence of Buddhism, Confucianism, and folk religions in maintaining social cohesion with a sense of frustration, the new religious movements (NRMs) emerged to provide altrnative teachings of hope through historical figures like Choe Je-u, Kang Il-sun (or Kang Jeungsan), Na Cheol, and Pak Chungbin. In terms of popularity, colonial Korea (1910-1940) was impressed by the native groups of Cheondogyo (=Donghak), Bocheongyo, and Mugeukdo. Son Byong-hee (1861-1922) was the third leader of the first Korean NRM, but both Cha Gyeong-seok (1880-1936) and Jo Cheol-Je (= Jo Jeongsan) (1895-1958) participated in the post-Jeungsan grassroots movements. How, then, did both of these new religions originate? How did they conceptualise their deities and interpret their teachings differently? What was their policy for national independence? The article explores the socio-religious leaders, historical origin, organizational structure, deities, teaching and doctrines, patriotism, and conflicts of both NRMs in a comparative context. As such, this article argues that they both maintained patriotic characteristics, but that Cha's Bocheongyo community with its ' 60-executives' system (60 bang) failed to manage their internal conflicts effectively. Meanwhile, Jo Cheol-Je of Mugeukdo had the charismatic leadership needed to maintain Mugeukdo, despite being seen as a pseudoreligion under the colonial pressure of Shintoism.
