  • Objectives : Evaluating water and its comparisons to Yin(陰) and Yang(陽). In this section, we will look into this matter from Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑) and introduce an oriental perspective on the subject of water(水部). Methods : Translating Eumchanboksikjeon(飮饌服食牋) from Junsangpaljeon(遵生八牋). An in depth study of related contents and comparing to the water section(水部) of Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑) Results : According to the section of Varieties of Teas and Water(茶泉類) in The Discussion of Springs(論泉水), Goryum(高濂) divided water into five different types in Eumchanboksikjeon(飮饌服食牋) of Junsangpaljeon(遵生八牋). These different types are Water that runs between rocks, Clear and cold water, Sweet and fragrant water, Spiritual water and Well water. Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑) also analyzed 28 different types of water out the 33 its list. The idea is that one must use water differently according its origins, where it originated, when and what season to maximize the usage of the water because the energy of water would be different. Conclusions : By evaluating water, we have learned that water picks up energy and changes according to its surrounding environments. The different types of water used changes the medicinal ingredients and it affects the human body differently. One must keep in mind, the cycles of water, its energy and how it helps us live a healthier life.

  • Indications of Hyeongbangpaedok-san for Soyang-type on "Donguisusebowon" are small. Therefore, indications of Hyeongbangpaedok-san for Soyang-type need to be extended for broader clinical use. There would be some methods to do that, and we could review "Dongeuibogam" that Four-Constitution Medicine formulas are based on. We reviewed Hyeongbangpaedok-san, Insampaedok-san which is the origin of Hyeongbangpaedok-san, and their modified formula(加減方) on "Dongeuibogam". As a result, we supposed 12 indications of non-classical formula(後世方) Hyeongbangpaedok-san, 2 indications of modified formula of non-classical formula Hyeongbangpaedok-san, and 12 indications of Insampaedok-san and its modified formula as possible indications of Hyeongbangpaedok for Soyang-type.

  • In "The region of the body in which abdomen pain manifests(腹痛有部分)" of "Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)", the abdomen is divided into the upper abdomen(大腹), umbilicus area(臍腹) and lower abdomen(小腹), which are in turn assigned to 3 Yins of greater yin(太陰), lesser yin(少陰) and reverting yin(厥陰) respectively to explain the causes and treatments of abdomen pain according to their locations. Meanwhile, the present Korean medicine tends to issue herbal formula without considering the cause of regional abdomen pain and the aspect of cold and heat(寒熱), deficiency and excess(虛實) in the symptom. This fragmentary treatment may bring out a serious failure. For the correction of this problem, the literature study on "The region of the body in which abdomen pain manifests(腹痛有部 分)" of "Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)" was carried out to obtain the following conclusions. In "The region of the body in which abdomen pain manifest (腹痛有部分)" of "Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)", it turned out that the use of herbal formula for the abdomen pain was the integrated one of herbal formulas for the abdomen pain in the external contraction such as cold damage yin condition(傷寒陰證) and cold in the middle condition(中寒證) and that the cause of abdomen pain was the explanation of diverse internal causes for the abdomen pain. And it was also found that the assignment of the upper abdomen(大腹), umbilicus area(臍腹) and lower abdomen(小腹) to 3 Yins had the locational and meridian meanings of 3 Yins according to internal causes and external contraction to get the basis of abdomen pain treatment in dividing it into 3 Yins.

  • The value of Dongeuibogam has been officially acknowledged as a Memory of the World. However, we should not overlook the forward-looking value of Dongeuibogam in addition to its backward-looking value. For the past 200 years, Western medicine has attained great achievements in therapeutic medicine based on Descartes' mind-body dualism, which focuses on the body as a separate entity from the mind. Recently, Western medicine modified its previously one-sided track into a new orientation towards holistic mind-body medicine in recognition of the two as an organic whole. At this point in time, it is essential to draw attention to the forward-looking value of Dongeuibogam, which pioneered mind-body medicine based on the medicinal philosophy of Jing Qi Shen more than 400 years ago.

  • Through the discussions on ascending, descending, in and out of functional activity of Ki, Nature and Life(性命) based on the correlations among essence of life, Ki and vitality, and the Heart which is the complex of heart and place of mental activity, orientation of 'Life(生命)' in "Dongeuibogam" is that heart and body are in a single construction not in two. Although "Dongeuibogam" has the characteristics of substantial discussions about prevalent inner Dan thought in those days in the medical field, it is quoted in the aspect of guiding and leading the Nature and Life(性命). As the nature of heart was developed psycological and physically, we could sense the influences of Confucian-medicine that accounted the Heart which is the place of mental activity and the Sung Confucianism trend of Chosun dynasty.
