  • New method to calculate the characteristics of the dominant and higher order modes of waveguide latching phase shifters are presented. Due to the tensor permeability, E and H fields inside the ferrite are expanded in terms of the LSE and LSM eigenmodes of the dielectric-slab-loaded waveguide. The equivalent coupled transmission line equations on the transverse plane are derived to obtain the dispersion characteristics and the E and H field distributions. Numerical results at X-band are compared with those published previously. The derived field distributions can be used to suppress the higher order modes of the latching phase shifters, so that the phase shift from the dominant mode only contributes the performance of the phase shifters.

  • Plastic strength analysis using plastic failure mode as a limit state is adopted instead of a conventional elastic structural analysis to predict the ultimate strength of Web frame idealized by a plane frame. Linear programming arid Compact procedure are developed for determining the collapse load factor. It is found that the final results are good agreement with the results of Elasto-plastic analysis. Besides, the redundant structures like Web frame is known to have multiple failure modes. Web frame may collapse under any of the possible failure modes. Thus, the identification of these possible failure modes is necessary and very important in the reliability analysis of Web frame. In order to deal with multiple failure modes, automatic generation method of all failure modes and basic failure modes is used for selecting the dominant failure modes. The probability of failure pastic collapse of Web frame is calculated using these dominant failure modes. The safety of Web frame is asscssed and compared by performing the deterministic and probabilistic analysis.

  • Shaping an input command through considering the resonant modes of multi degrees of freedom system, it is possible to realize the wanted motion, without exciting the uncontrollable modes of the flexible system. But, an increase of modes to be considered brings inevitably about the time delay due to an excessive rising time. On the purpose of reducing the rising time, only the interesting and dominant modes can be considered to determine the timing pulses of input shaper. In this paper, an effect of shaper by the partial modes is analysed for a specific system and the input shapers by the partial modes are analysed for three d.o.f damped system, using Matlab simulation.

  • This study is constructed to investigate the sloshing effect on the motions of a two-dimensional rectangular cylinder experimentally and numerically. The modes of motion under consideration are sway and roll, and also experimental cases are divided by two categories; 1-DoF roll motion and 2-DoF motion (Coupling sway and roll). It is found that the sway response is considerably affected by the motion of the fluid, particularly near the sloshing natural frequency, while the roll response changes comparatively small. The dominant mode of motion is analyzed for 2-DoF experiments as well. The measured data for 1-DoF motions is compared with numerical results obtained by the Multi-modal approach. The numerical schemes vary in detail with the number of dominant sloshing modes; i.e. there is a single dominant mode for the Single-dominant method, while the Model 2 method assumes that the first two modes are superior. For the roll motion, numerical results obtained by the two different methods are relatively in good agreement with the experiments, and these two results are similar in most wave frequency range. However, the discrepancies are apparent where the fluid motion is not governed by a single mode. But both of numerical methods over-predict the motion at the vicinity of the sloshing natural frequency. In order to correct the discrepancy, the modal damping needs to be investigated more precisely. Furthermore, another multi-modal approach, such as the Boussinesq-type method, seems to be required in the region of the intermediate liquid.

  • Combination of the parametric and the wavelet analyses of acoustic emission (AE) signals was applied to identify the failure modes in carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite laminates during tensile testing. AE signals detected by surface mounted lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) sensors were analyzed by parametric analysis based on the time of occurrence which classifies AE signals corresponding to failure modes. The frequency band level-energy analysis can distinguish the dominant frequency band for each failure mode. It was observed that the same type of failure mechanism produced signals with different characteristics depending on the stacking sequences and the type of sensors. This indicates that the proposed method can identify the failure modes of the signals if the stacking sequences and the sensors used are known.

  • This study aims to monitor the variation of modal frequencies of steel buildings during their construction sequence. In this respect, construction of a steel building is followed by vibration based measurements. The monitored building is a three-story educational building within a building group whose structural system consists of steel moment resisting steel frames and eccentric braces. Five different acceleration measurements in two perpendicular directions are taken on five different construction stages, starting from the erection of the columns and beams ending with the completion of the construction. The recorded measurements are transferred into frequency domain and the dominant frequencies for each case have been determined. The change in the dominant frequencies is evaluated with the existing construction stages and performed constructional works between the stages. The last measurement, performed on the building in service, revealed the first two dominant frequencies as mutual in X and Y direction, showing that these dynamic modes are torsional modes. This result is investigated by numerical analysis performed with finite element model of the building constructed for design purpose. Lower frequencies and different mode shapes are determined from numerical analysis. The reason of lower frequencies is discussed and the vibration survey is extended to determine the effects of an adjacent building. The results showed that the building is in strong relation with an adjoining building in spite of a designed construction joint.

  • In this paper, matched field processing algorithm robust to environmental mismatches in an ocean waveguide based on feature extraction is summarized. However, in applying this processor to localize a source there are two preliminary issues to be resolved. One is the number of eigenvectors to be extracted and the other is the number of environmental samples to be used. To determine these issues, the relation between the number of dominant modes propagating in a given ocean waveguide and that of eigenvectors to be extracted is analyzed. Then, the analysis results are confirmed by the subspace analysis. This analysis quantifies the similarity between the subspace spanned by the signal vectors and that spanned by the eigenvectors to be extracted. The error index is defined as a relative difference between the location estimated by the current processor and the real source location. It is identified that in the case of extracting the largest eigenvectors equal to the number of dominant modes in a given environment, the processor localizes the source successfully. From the numerical simulations, it is shown that use of at least 30 environmental samples guarantee stable performance of the proposed processor.

  • It is desirable to predict the noise and vibration problems of a passenger car in its design stage for a better ride quality. Dominant frequencies of the noise inside a car range from about 50 Hz to 300 Hz and these are frequently caused by the coupling of the acoustic normal modes of the compartment cavity and structural modes of the body. In this paper, car interior noise problem is investigated in view of vibration-acoustic modes coupling and numerical simulation is performed on the interior noise. In the simulation, experimental modal data of the vehicle structure are utilized to improve the accuracy of the analysis. The results are in good agreement with those of experiment on a half scaled vehicle compartment model. Especially, strongly coupled modes can be predicted, which give useful informations to solve noise problems of real car at design stage.

  • In this paper, the eigenvalue sensitivity analysis algorithm in discrete systems by the RCF method are presented and applied to the power system including TCSC. The RCF analysis method enabled to precisely calculate eigenvalue sensitivity coefficients of dominant oscillation modes after periodic switching operations. These simulation results are very different from those of the conventional continuous system analysis method such as the state space equation method

  • This paper explains modeling and analysis of RC-dominant wires for high-speed wireline transceiver design. A closed form formula derived from telegrapher's equation accurately describes a frequency response of an RC-dominant wire, yet it is simple and intuitive for designers to easily understand design trade-offs without a complex numerical equation solver. This paper explains how the model is derived and how it can help designers in example transceiver designs.
