The relationship between nutrients and phytoplankton dynamics was investigated daily from 12 April to 22 July 2003 in Sagami Bay, Japan. According to multidimensional scaling (MDS) and cluster analysis, phytoplankton community was divided into four distinct groups. The first group was consisted of centric diatom species, such as Guinardia spp., Detonula spp., Letocylindrus danicus, Skeletonema costatum, Eucampia zodiacus and Chaetoceros spp.. The second and third clusters comprised mainly diatoms and dinoflagellates, respectively. The other cluster was restricted to the samples collected during the last sampling period when the rainfall and river discharge was frequently recorded. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was applied to analyze four groups respectively, which focused on the effects of nutrients concentration and ratio on phytoplankton variations. Based on CCA analysis, most species of centric diatom were negatively correlated with DSi concentrations and Si/N ratio. Nutrients were strongly limited phytoplankton growth during the summer when the rainfall was not observed, whereas river discharge by rainfall and counterclockwise coastal currents (although the surface circulation pattern is often altered by Kuroshio Current, the counterclockwise coastal currents are generally dominant) has brought phytoplankton population accumulation and triggered the micoalgae growth in western part of the bay. Phosphorous (P) was strongly limited after significantly increases in the phytoplankton abundances. However, silicate (Si) was not a major limiting factor for phytoplankton production, since Si/DIN and Si/P ratio did not create any potential stoichiometric limitation. This indicates that high Si availability contributes favorably to the maintenance of diatom ecosystems in Sagami Bay.

The spatio-temporal variations of the dissolved methane concentration were investigated and the methane budget was estimated in the Nakdong Estuary in January, September, and November of 2014. Dissolved methane showed seasonal variation (21~874 nM) with high concentration in summer due to enhanced temperature and fresh water discharge. Decreasing trends of dissolved methane from the river to the estuary were consistent in all seasons showing the main source of the estuarine methane is river discharge. However, the decreasing trends were modified seasonally due to the local sources such as organic-rich sediments in intertidal zone or near the estuarine barrage. Dissolved methane concentration in the Nakdong Estuary was high, compared to other estuaries probably due to the well developed wetland in Nakdong-river system and stagnation effect from barrages and dams. Dominant sink for the Nakdong estuarine methane was outflux into the atmosphere. Relatively long residence time (produced by barrier island and estuarine dam) in the estuary might provide the enough time for the outgassing.

Tunnel boring machines combined with the earth pressure balanced shield method (EPB shield TBMs) have been adopted in urban areas as they allow excavation of tunnels with limited ground deformation through continuous and repetitive excavation and support. Nevertheless, the expansion of TBM construction requires much more minor and exquisitely controlled surface settlement to prevent economic loss. Several parametric studies controlling the tunnel's geometry, ground properties, and TBM operational factors assuming ordinary conditions for EPB shield TBM excavation have been conducted, but the impact of excessive excavation on the induced settlement has not been adequately studied. This study conducted a numerical evaluation of surface settlement induced by the ground loss from face imbalance, excessive excavation, and tail void grouting. The numerical model was constructed using FLAC3D and validated by comparing its result with the field data from literature. Then, parametric studies were conducted by controlling the ground stiffness, face pressure, tail void grouting pressure, and additional volume of muck discharge. As a result, the contribution of these operational factors to the surface settlement appeared differently depending on the ground stiffness. Except for the ground stiffness as the dominant factor, the order of variation of surface settlement was investigated, and the volume of additional muck discharge was found to be the largest, followed by the face pressure and tail void grouting pressure. The results from this study are expected to contribute to the development of settlement prediction models and understanding the surface settlement behavior induced by TBM excavation.
Myrionecta rubra, a mixotrophic ciliate, is a cosmopolitan red tide species which is commonly found in neritic and estuarine waters. M. rubra had long been listed as an “nculturable protist”until 2 different laboratory strains were finally established in 2 research groups at the beginning of this century, enabling us to perform initiative investigation into various aspect of the live M. rubra strains (Gustafson et al. 2000; Yih et al. 2004b; Johnson and Stoecker 2005). Field sampling was carried out on high tide at 2 fixed stations around Kunsan Inner Harbor (St.1 near the Estuarine Weir and St.2 off Kunsan Ferry Station) every other day for 4 months from mid-February 2004 to understand detailed figure of the recurrent spring blooms of M. rubra following the onset of the water gates operation of the Keum River Estuarine Weir on August 1994. With its maximum abundance of 272 cells mL$^{-1}$ in St.1, fluctuation pattern of the M. rubra population at the 2 stations was strikingly similar. Notable growth of M. rubra population started on late April, to cause M. rubra red tides during one month from mid-May in which “xceptionally low salinity days”without its red tide were intermittently inserted. High abundance of M. rubra over 50 cells mL$^{-1}$ was recorded at samples with their water temperature and salinity higher than 15${^{\circ}C}$ and 4.0 psu, respectively. During pre-bloom period when salinity fluctuation is moderate and the water temperature is cooler than 15°C, Skeletonema costatum, a chain-forming centric diatom, was most dominant. Cyanobacterial species such as Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Phormidium sp. replaced other dominant phytoplankters on the days with “xceptionally low salinity”even during the main blooming period of M. rubra. To summarize, M. rubra could form spring blooms in Keum River Estuary when the level of salinity fluctuation was more severe than that for the dominant diatom Skeletonema costatum and milder than that for the predominance by freshwater cyanobacteria. Therefore, optimal control of the scale and frequency of freshwater discharges might lead us to partially modify the fluctuation pattern of M. rubra populations as well as the period of spring blooms by M. rubra in Keum River Estuary. Sampling time interval of 2 days for the present study or daily sampling was concluded to be minimally required for the detailed exploration into the spring blooms by M. rubra populations in estuaries with weirs like Keum River Estuary.

In this paper, three carbon sources, i.e., solid graphite, gaseous CH4 and liquid ethanol, and one solid silicon source were employed to synthesize SiC/C nanocomposite powders by arc-discharge plasma. The processing conditions such as the component ratios of raw materials, atmospheric gases, etc. were adjusted for controllable synthesis of the nanopowders. It is indicated that both of solid graphite and silicon can be co-evaporated and reacted to form nanophases of cubic ${\beta}$-SiC with ~50 nm in mean size and a little free graphite; the carbon atoms decomposed from gaseous $CH_4$ favor to combine with the evaporated silicon atoms to form the dominant SiC nanophase; liquid carbon source of ethanol can also be used to harvest the main ${\beta}$-SiC and minor 6H-SiC phases in the assembly of nanoparticles. The as-prepared SiC/C nanocomposite powders were further purified by a heat-treatment in air and their photocatalytic performances were then greatly improved.

To understand the characteristics of the spatio-temporal distribution of phytoplankton after barrage construction in the Nakdong River Estuary, this study investigated relevant environmental parameters and phytoplankton status based on bi-monthly samples collected from the Nakdong River Estuary itself from February 2013 to December 2015. Environmental parameters did not differ significantly across these years but did vary between zones and seasons. The results suggested that the upper zone was dominated by fresh-water diatoms, green algae, and blue-green algae, whereas the lower zone was mostly dominated by dinoflagellates. The presence of Stephanodiscus spp., Asterionellopsis formosa, and Microcystis spp. in the upper zone was related to the inflow of freshwater discharge by artificial control of dyke gates. The dominant phytoplankton species in this zone were dependent on temperature, wind speed, DIP, and DIN, while those in the lower zone were mostly dependent on nutrients and wind speed. In addition, at the lower zone, there were negative correlations between Prorocentrum donghaiense, DIN, and wind speed, with its abundance being higher during the summer than other seasons. Analysis of temporal variations did not indicate any significant differences in the upper zone but did reveal variations among seasons at the lower zone. Except in 2014, the lower zone could be divided into periods dominated by diatoms (October-April) and dinoflagellates (June-August). These results suggest that the characteristics of the phytoplankton community were influenced by changes in the inflow of freshwater species and nutrients given the difference in the range affected by freshwater discharge.
Daily monitoring was conducted to elucidate the changes in turbidity and distribution of particles in the turbid water of a river-type reservoir (Paltang Reservoir) from 1999 to 2001. Water turbidity and the particle distribution of turbid water were principally affected by meteorological factors particularly rainfall patterns and hydrological factors such as inflow and outflow. The mean concentration of turbidity was constant each year, with the concentration of less than 10 NTU accounting for 85%. Seasonal characteristics were remarkable, with winter and spring having < 5 NTU, autumn 5 ${\sim}$ 10 NTU, and summer > 20 NTU. Unlike hydrological changes, maximum turbidity was observed from late July to early August and continuously increased from 1999 to 2001. In particular, the maximum turbidity of reservoirs remarkably increased toward the lower part of reservoir in 2001. Discharge and turbidity increased or decreased slowly in 1999; in contrast, turbidity rapidly increased in the early rainfall period of 2000 and 2001 but later decreased as discharge increased. In the particles of turbid water, clay ingredients were more densely distributed and more dominant in all stations. Of the total particles in turbid water, clay constituted 63.9${\sim}$66.6% and silt 33.4${\sim}$36.1% to account for a combined total of 98.9 ${\sim}$ 100%. Sand made up less than 1.1%. The turbidity of river-type reservoir was also found to be mainly affected by the biomass of plankton in a non-rainfall period. During a rainfall period, however, the quantity and relative ratio of inorganic particles depending on the soil components affected turbidity.

This study analyzes the changes in the flow characteristics due to the difference in inflow discharges from the main channel and tributary at the confluence of the Nakdong and Geumho Rivers. The analysis was done using a two-dimensional numerical method. The study site has complicated flow patterns because of the discharge variation from the main stream and tributary. The study section has a meandering main channel, and the hydraulic characteristics cannot be defined with simple conditions such as the confluence angle of the channels or the ratio of the channel widths. An actual flood event in 2012 was applied in the numerical simulation. The maximum velocity occurred in the meandering section after passing the confluence, where a rapid change was expected. A high velocity and large bed change in this section were observed in the simulation results. The variation of discharges from the main channel and tributary was a more dominant factor in the flow and bed changes for the normal flow conditions than the flood event. This indicates that countermeasures for channel stabilization should be considered in the meandering section downstream of the confluence section, and countermeasures for the study section should be investigated.
A series of anchor stations were occupied along the Keum EAstuary during six different periods of tidal and fluvial regimes. The results clearly show that the formation and evolution of the turbidity maximum play an important role in the sedimentary processes in this environment. The turbidity maximum in the Keum Estuary is primarily related to the tidal range at the mouth and is caused by the resuspension of bottom sediments. In this estuary, the turbidity maximum is not a permanent feature and shows semidiurnal, fortnightly and seasonal variations. Repetition of deposition and resuspension of fine sediments occur in response to the variation in current velocity associated with semidiurnal tidal cycles. The core of turbidity maximum shifts landward or seaward accordion to the flood-ebb succession. The turbidity maximum also shows a fortnightly variation in response to the spring-neap cycles. Thus, the turbidity maximum degenerates during neap-tide and regenerates during spring-tide. The freshwater discharge is also an important factor in the formation and destruction of the turbidity maximum. The increase in freshwater discharge in rainy season can create an ebb-dominant current pattern which enhances the seaward transport of suspended sediments, resulting in the shortening of residence time of suspended materials in the estuary. Thus, under this high discharge condition, the turbidity maximum exists only during spring-tide and starts to disappear as the tidal amplitude decreases.
Investigations were carried out to observe the seasonal succession of phytoplankton, and viable counts of bacteria from the mid to lower reaches of Nakdong Fiver. An intensive monitoring was conducted from May to December 1999 biweekly at 6 sites in a main channel and 3 tributaries. Although there are several sites with high nutrient loading from the basin, all of study sites showed mesotrophic states owing to high discharge(June~September). Relatively low algal biomass and CFUs(mean of chi. a, $12.3{\pm}$11.5 $\mu\textrm{g}${\el}l$, CFUs : 1.8${\times}10^7$) were observed during the rainy season. The diatom population was dominant(over 85% of total community) year-long with peaks(Stephanodiscus hantzchii) in the fall and winter. Dominance of blue-green algal groups during the summer was not observed in the summer. Microorganisms peaked in the summer and fall(June~September), affected mainly by the inputs of phytoplankton and nutrients. Biomass of phytoplankton and CFU counts were higher in the Kumho River than other tributaries and main channel.
