  • In the present study, more systematic laboratory model tests under various conditions are carried out to investigate load-sharing characteristics among the granular pile and adjacent soils and bearing capacity characteristics with different pile lengths. Further to evaluate effects of both a loading area and a spacing of pile installation on the bearing capacity and bearing capacity characteristics of each pile in group, model test results are also analyzed for the purpose of an efficient design of granular compaction piles. From the analysis of the model test results, it is found that the ultimate capacity of granular compaction group piles increases with a decrease in the installation distance among granular piles. It is also found that the dominant failure mode of the granular compaction piles is bulging failure. It is further realized that the length of a granular pile could not significantly affect on the ultimate granular pile capacity.

  • Controversy has surrounded the potential impacts of phytoplankton on the tropical climate, since climate models produce diverse behaviors in terms of the equatorial mean state and El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) amplitude. We explored biophysical impacts on the tropical ocean temperature using an ocean general circulation model coupled to a biogeochemistry model in which chlorophyll can modify solar attenuation and in turn feed back to ocean physics. Compared with a control model run excluding biophysical processes, our model with biogeochemistry showed that subsurface chlorophyll concentrations led to an increase in sea surface temperature (particularly in the western Pacific) via horizontal accumulation of heat contents. In the central Pacific, however, a mild cold anomaly appeared, accompanying the strengthened westward currents. The magnitude and skewness of ENSO were also modulated by biophysical feedbacks resulting from the chlorophyll affecting El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ and La $Ni{\tilde{n}}a$ in an asymmetric way. That is, El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ conditions were intensified by the higher contribution of the second baroclinic mode to sea surface temperature anomalies, whereas La $Ni{\tilde{n}}a$ conditions were slightly weakened by the absorption of shortwave radiation by phytoplankton. In our model experiments, the intensification of El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ was more dominant than the dampening of La $Ni{\tilde{n}}a$, resulting in the amplification of ENSO and higher skewness.

  • Composite has become one of the most frequently used material for a tube of satellite camera due to its attractive characteristics. However, laminated composites can be weakened by delamination which comes from interlaminar stress. Such failure mode cause structural instability of the camera as well as degradation of optical quality. Therefore composite tube should be robust in delamination. Also, composite tube should have high stiffness, sufficient high natural frequency and small coefficient of thermal expansion. The design procedures presented in this paper are based on design of experiments. The experiments for mechanical analysis are designed by the tables of orthogonal arrays. In order to manipulate the various mechanical properties systematically, multiple-attribute decision making(MADM) is employed. Through analysis of variance and F-test, the critical design variables which have dominant influences on mechanical performance are determined. Finally improved ply angles for composite tube are determined.

  • Bicycle is one of the most important eco-friendly transport mode which can cope with global warming. ICTs(information and communication technologies) on bicycles became a dominant factor for success to the spread of bicycles to public as we experienced Public Bike System. In this paper, conceptualization and classification of u-Bike services are fulfilled and its priority was examined using AHP method. Group capabilities technique of ECII, a computer fool of AHP was invited to minimize bias on appraisal. 12 u-Bike services were conceptualized. U-service with highest adoptability was 'bike and ride' service which can link bicycle to public transportation. 'Prevention system from abandonment and theft' and 'public bike system' similar to Velib system in Paris are also considered to be very important services in u-City.

  • The major source of errors in high-speed networks such as Broadband ISDN(B-ISDN) is buffer overflow during congested conditions. These congestion errors are the dominant sources of errors in high-speed networks and result in cell losses. Conventional communication protocols use error detection and retransmission to deal with lost packets and transmission errors. As an alternative, we have presented a method to recover consecutive cell losses using forward error correction(FEC) in ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks to reduce the problem. The method finds the lost cells by observing new cell sequence number($SN^{\ast}$). We have used the LI field together with SN and ST fields to consider the $SN^{\ast}$ which provides more correcting coverage than SN in ATM standards. The $SN^{\ast}$ based on the additive way such as the addition of LI capacity to original SN capacity is numbered a repeatedly 0-to-80 cycle. Another extension can be based on the multiplicative way such that LI capacity is multiplied by SN capacity. The multiplicative $SN^{\ast}$ is numbered in a repeatedly 0-to-1025 cycle.

  • A series of long wave measurements was made in the region of Shikotan Island (the South Kuril Islands) during 1990-1992: 7 bottom pressure stations were installed in 5 bays and inlets of Shikotan and 3 precise microbarographs were situated at the shore. The observations were taken in order to monitor tsunami waves, estimate resonance features of coastal topography, and investigate seiche generation mechanism. It was found that forced long waves dominate in the motions with periods exceeding 2 hours, freely propagating long waves prevail at periods of 30-120 min and eigen-oscillations of bays (seiches) are the predominant type of long waves at periods less than 30 min. The Helmholtz mode with period 30 min in Krabovaya Bay and 18.5 min in Malokurilskaya Bay is the most important type of wave motion in the inner Shikotan basins. There is a good correlation between passages of atmospheric disturbances and generation of seiches near the coast of Shikotan Island. In particular, jumps in atmospheric pressure excite seiches in different bays simultaneously, in each one with the corresponding dominant period. The atmospheric spectra were remarkably smooth and stable, and could be described by a $\omega$$^{-2}$26/ power law.

  • Whereas The masonry buildings are safe under gravity loads, most of the masonry buildings in Korea have many structural defects under a lateral load due to an earthquake acceleration. But there is no earthquake resistant design code for the Masonry in Korea. Therefore it may be necessary to be set up an seismic code and be suggested for reinforcing methods for existing masonry buildings. The purpose of this paper is to investigate seismic capacity of reinforced masonry buildings subjected to earthquake load. The typical two models of the masonry building in Korea are selected through a site investigation. On the basis of test results, the fiber reinforcing effect of the two models was considerable. The maximum base shear force and deformation capacity for RM were remarkably increased. It was found that the pier rocking failure was a dominant mode for the RM buildings during a seismic excitation.

  • Emission regulations on greenhouse gas(GHG) in automobiles have been stringent because of global warming effect. Over 90% of total GHG emission are carbon dioxides and about 20% of this $CO_2$ emission are emitted from automobiles. In this study, 110 vehicles were tested on a chassis dynamometer and $CO_2$ emissions and fuel economy were measured in order to investigate the characteristics of $CO_2$ emission factor from passenger vehicles which are the most dominant vehicle type in Korea. The characteristics of emissions in accordance with displacements, gross vehicle weight, NIER and CVS-75 speed mode were discussed. It was found that vehicles having larger displacement, heavier gross vehicle weight, automatic transmission and specially at cold start emitted more $CO_2$ emissions. From these results, correlation between $CO_2$ emission and fuel economy was also obtained. This study may contribute to evaluate domestic greenhouse gas emissions and establish national policies on climate changes in future.

  • Stonecutters Bridge of Hong Kong is a cable-stayed bridge with two single-column pylons each 298 m high and an aerodynamic twin deck. The total length of the bridge is 1596 m with a main span of 1018 m. The top 118 m of the tower will comprise structural steel and concrete composite while the bottom part will be of reinforced concrete. The bridge deck at the central span will be of steel whilst the side spans will be of concrete. Stonecutters Bridge has adopted a twin-girder deck design with a wide clear separation of 14.3 m between the two longitudinal girders. Although a number of studies have been conducted to investigate the aerodynamic performance of twin-girder deck, the actual real life application of this type of deck is extremely limited. This therefore triggered the need for conducting the present studies, the main objective of which is to investigate the performance of Stonecutters Bridge against flutter at its in-service stage as well as during construction. Based on the flutter derivatives obtained from the 1:80 scale rigid section model experiment, flutter analysis was carried out using 3-D finite element based single parameter searching method developed by the second author of this paper. A total of 6 finite element models of the bridge covering the in-service stage as well as 5 construction stages were established. The dynamic characteristics of the bridge associated with these stages were computed and applied in the analyses. Apart from the critical wind speeds for the onset of flutter, the dominant modes of vibration participating in the flutter vibration were also identified. The results indicate that the bridge will be stable against flutter at its in-service stage as well as during construction at wind speeds much higher than the verification wind speed of 95 m/s (1-minute mean).

  • Goltz syndrome(focal dermal hypoplasia) is a rare disorder characterized by ectodermal and mesodermal dysplasia described in 1962 by Goltz. In Korea, one case of Goltz syndrome was reported in 1994. The inheritance mode is mostly X-linked dominant. Skin abnormality is the most common manifestation including hypoplasia of the dermis. Skeletal involvement such as syndactyly, polydactyly, scoliosis, kyphosis and spina bifida occulta may be present, also ocular and dental abnormalities are reported. Radiologic findings are the osteopathy and striation of the long bone. We experienced a case of Goltz syndrome in a 9-year old female who was presented with right side hypotrophy, focal dermal hypoplasia, ocular(anidria, microcornea), dental(oligodontia, amelogenesis) and skeletal(syndactyly) abnormalities. Skin biopsy was performed and showed decreased expression of type I collagen gene with Northern blotting.
