  • An investigation of the effects of Pb for domestic anuran embryos were evaluated with the Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay; Xenopus (FETAX). Depending on the species, the difference between the embryo size and the embryonic development time was determined. As a result, mortality and malformation rates were increased, malformation patterns were changed and larval body length were decreased in a dose dependent manner of the Pb. The half maximal lethal concentration ($LC_{50}$) of the Bufo gargarizans, Hyla japonica, Rana nigromaculata and Bombina orientalis were 0.58, 0.49, 0.52, $0.54mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. The half maximal effective concentration ($EC_{50}$) of the Bufo gargarizans, Hyla japonica, Rana nigromaculata and Bombina orientalis were 0.35, 0.74, 0.30, $0.29mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively. The teratogenic index (TI) were 1.66 in the Bufo gargarizans, 1.81 in the Hyla japonica, 1.73 in the Rana nigromaculata and 1.86 in the Bombina orientalis, respectively. Therefore, the Pb seems likely to have a teratogenic effect in all four species' embryonic development. The Bombina orientalis was the most sensitive to the Pb. This means that the difference between the different species, even if they have all been exposed to the same concentration of pollutants depending on the species. The result above show that the Pb acts as a teratogenic agent in the development of the four domestic frog species.

  • The study was attempted to scrutinize the normal osmotic fragility of erythrocytes in domestic poultry such as chicken, quail and duck, making a comparison with that in domestic mammalia such as dog and pig. Osmotic fragility of erythrocytes was determined on blood samples from 10 healthy adult animals in each species. Optical initial hemolysis of erythrocytes occurred at $0.395{\pm}0.03%$ NaCl for chicken, $0.410{\pm}0.03%$ for duck, $0.440{\pm}0.02%$ for quail, $0.470{\pm}0.05%$ for dog and $0.560{\pm}0.03%$ for pig. Optical complete hemolysis of erythrocytes occurred at $0.270{\pm}0.02%$ NaCl for chicken, $0.305{\pm}0.03%$ for duck, $0.360{\pm}0.02%$ for quail, $0.370{\pm}0.03%$ for dog and $0.455{\pm}0.03%$ for pig. In other words, erythrocytes of poultry have stronger resistance to osmotic lysis than those of mammalia, showing the strongest resistance in chicken among the tested poultry.

  • Riemerellosis, contagious disease of domestic ducks in Korea, occurred in December of 2007 in a farm located in Eumsung, Chungbuk province. The affected ducks were 22 days old and the owner reported that almost one hundred of ducks had died everyday for a few days after infection. Clinical signs were listlessness, ocular and nasal discharge, greenish diarrhea, ataxia, tremor of head and legs, and coma. On necropsy we found fibrinous exudate, which involved serosal surfaces in general, but most evidences were in the pericardial cavity and over the surface of the liver. The causative agent was isolated from the liver of the affected ducks and identified as Riemerella anatipestifer using biochemical tests. Also, the isolate was susceptible to ampicillin, cephalothin, sulfamethazole/trimethoprim, Florfenicol among the 23 species antibiotics (AST Discs, OXOID) used in our laboratory. Further studies should be needed for the more effective control and better epidemiological information such as pathogenicity, serotype, genotype and treatment.

  • The costal area where takes up over 32% in domestic teritory is considered as very importantly because it has not only economic facilities such as harbor and an industrial complex but also recreation facilities. Moreover, the tidal flat area has been used as culture ponds and salt farms because this area is occupied by various oceanic species. Also, the tidal flat area has played an important role to purify ocean pollution and maintain an ecosystem. However, the costal ecosystem has seriously threatened by domestic reclamation projects and a large-scale tide embankment during recent 10 years in Korea. This serious problem results in loosing 34%(810$km^2$) of the entire domestic costal area. In this paper, the micro-landform in the tidal flat area, which is called as Garolim bay in Korea, is classified by using Landsat TM images also verified through a filed report. Through the result of this, the tidal flat area is expected to manage efficiently especially through analyzing sediment environment and characteristic of grain size by using satellite images.

  • The reconstituted tobacco leaves(RTL) playa major part in the control of the low density and tar cigarette. Reconstituted tobacco manufactured by the papermaking process has much higher filling power than homogenized tobacco manufactured by slurry and rolling process. Fragile reconstituted tobaccos are liable to lead to small particles detrimental for filling power so they must be properly flexible. This work was conducted to determine the effect of CaCO$_3$ addition in paper-making process on the filling power and the flexibility of the reconstituted tobacco and to obtain the fundamental informations for improving the quality of domestic reconstituted tobacco. We analyzed the wood fiber species, the filler level, the fiber length, the fineness level and observed the surface of the RTL. From the obtained results, we could determine that foreign reconstituted tobacco was manufactured by blending softwood with hardwood and over 8% of calcium carbonate at the addition level. The domestic RTL has much higher fine fiber level by 23.2 % than that of foreign, so the refining treatment process and the condition must be reoptimized for the improvement of RTL quality.

  • A crude drug "Dang-Gui", belonging to the genus Angelica, has been used as a traditional herbal medicine in Asia. Various studies have investigated the chemical components and pharmacological activities of Dang-Gui worldwide. However, domestic research results published in Korean are undervalued in international academia due to language barriers. Therefore, it is necessary to summarize the domestic research findings systematically for greater accessibility. This review focuses on the results published in four Korean pharmaceutical journals between 1970 and 2018, which detail the botanical, phytochemical, and pharmacological properties of three Angelica species (A. gigas, A. sinensis, and A. acutiloba) used as "Dang-Gui" in Korea, China, and Japan.

  • Fumonisin $B_{1}$ ($FB_{1}$) is hepatotoxic in all species, and initiator and promotor for hepatocarcinogenesis produced mainly by Fusarium moniliforme. This fungus is commonly natural contaminant of corn and other grains worldwide, and has been associated with animal and human diseases. In these study, natural occurrence of $FB_{1}$ was surveyed in 30 healthy domestic corn kernels in Chonbuk and Kangwon province, harvested in 1994 and intended for human consumption, and 15 imported American and Chinese samples of each, collected from different ship-loading at Inchon harbor for animal foodstuffs. $FB_{1}$ contents were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a fiourescence detector. The data revealed that 2 out of 12 corn kernels from Kangwon province with 1.1 and 0.7 ppm, and 2 out of 18 corns from Chonbuk province with 0.5 and 1.3 ppm, respectively. However, there was no detection of $FB_{1}$ in imported corn samples, even though those were visibly moldy.

  • Domestic oak trees of Quercus variabilis and Quercus serrata were harvested from several forest sites and their green moisture contents, green specific gravities and fiber lengths were compared. The green specific gravities of Quercus serrata trees showed differences between the forest sites at 5% significance level while those of Quercus variabilis didn't. In the radial direction the green specific gravities of Quercus variabilis gradually increased from pith to bark. There was no discrepancy of the green specific gravities between the sapwood and heartwood of Quercus variabilis. And no difference of fiber length was found between individual trees and tree heights for both species.

  • In a previous study, it was revealed that three major softwoods, Japanese pine, Korean pine and Japanese larch, heat-treated at $220^{\circ}C$, could produce high quality dark-colored boards. It is known that heat treatment decreases the hygroscopicity of wood. The hygroscopicity of major domestic softwoods and hardwoods heat-treated at $220^{\circ}C$ was investigated by a saturated salt solution method and compared with that of black and white charcoals. Equilibrium moisture contents of wood decreased with the increase of heat treatment time. Isotherm shapes of wood species were different from those of charcoals. Heat treatment decreases the equilibrium moisture contents of black locust more than those of Korean pine and Japanese larch. It was found that surface hardness of wood is improved by heat treatment to a certain extent, but a longer heat treatment causes thermal degradation, resulting in the decrease of the surface hardness.

  • Toxoplasma gondii is a species of parasitic protozoa in the genus Toxoplasma. The definitive host of T. gondii is the cat, but the parasite can be carried by the vast majority of warm-blooded animals, including humans. It is often found in the tissues of food animals including pigs and sheep. To determine the regional prevalence of infection with T. gondii, bloods (n=300) from domestic pigs and tissues (n=200) from slaughter pigs in Gyeongnam province were tested using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detection of antibody and antigen. A total of 115 sero-positive pigs were identified for a prevalence rate of 38.3%. Of the 50 herds from domestic pigs tested, 34 had at least one sero-positive pig for a herd prevalence rate of 68.0%. Sero-positive rates of pigs in fattening farm were higher than that of pigs in breeding company. Sero-positive rates of sows were higher than that of growing pigs. Seasonally, sero-positive rates of pigs were highest in winter (80.0%) and lowest in spring (23.8%). According to farm size, sero-positive rates of pigs were higher in small size farms (${\leq}$2,000) than that of big size farms (>2,000). However, none of the bloods (n=300) from domestic pigs and tissues (n=200) from slaughter pigs were positive for T. gondii specific DNA by PCR.
