We performed a numerical investigation to find out the optimal choice of the spatial discretization in the distributed-Lagrangian-multiplier/fictitious-domain (DLM/FD) method for the solid/fluid interaction problem. The elastic solid bar attached on the bottom in a pressure-driven channel flow of a Newtonian fluid was selected as a model problem. Our formulation is based on the scheme of Yu (2005) for the interaction between flexible bodies and fluid. A fixed regular rectangular discretization was applied for the description of solid and fluid domain by using the fictitious domain concept. The hydrodynamic interaction between solid and fluid was treated implicitly by the distributed Lagrangian multiplier method. Considering a simplified problem of the Stokes flow and the linearized elasticity, two numerical factors were investigated to clarify their effects and to find the optimum condition: the distribution of Lagrangian multipliers and the solid/fluid interfacial condition. The robustness of this method was verified through the mesh convergence and a pseudo-time step test. We found that the fluid stress in a fictitious solid domain can be neglected and that the Lagrangian multipliers are better to be applied on the entire solid domain. These results will be used to extend our study to systems of elastic particle in the Stokes flow, and of particles in the viscoelastic fluid.

To calculate the fluid-structure interaction(FSI) problem rationally, it should be the basic technology to analyse each domain of fluid and structure accurately. In this paper, a new FSI analysis algorithm was introduced using the 3D solid finite element for structural analysis and CFD code based on the HCIB method for viscous flow analysis. The fluid and structural domain were analysed successively and alternatively in time domain. The structural domain was analysed by the Newmark-b direct time integration scheme using the pressure field calculated by the CFD code. The results for example calculation were compared with other research and it was shown that those coincided each other. So we can conclude that the developed algorithm can be applied to the general FSI problems.
The energy-transmitting boundary, which is used in the well-known finite element method (FEM) program FLUSH, is quite efficient for the earthquake response analysis of buildings considering soil-structure interaction. However, it is applicable only in the frequency domain. The author proposed methods for transforming frequency dependent impedance into the time domain, and studied the time domain transform of the boundary. In this paper, first, the estimation methods for both the halfspace condition under the bottom of the soil model and the pseudo three-dimensional effect were studied with the time domain transmitting boundary. Next, response behavior when using the boundary was studied in detail using a practical soil and building model. The response accuracy was compared with those using viscous boundary, and the boundary that considers the excavation force. Through these studies, the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed time domain transmitting boundary were confirmed.
WW domains are small protein modules consisting of three-stranded antiparallel β-sheet, and involved in the protein-protein interaction for various biological systems. We overexpressed and purified WW2 domain from human AIP4/Itch (a member of Nedd4 family) using a pH/temperature dependent cleavage system. The backbone assignments of WW2 domain were completed, and secondary structure was predicted. Furthermore, backbone flexibility of WW2 domain was determined by 1H-15N heteronuclear NOE and amide hydrogen exchange experiments. The structural information would contribute to the structural determination of WW2 domain as well as the interaction study of WW2 domain with various binding partners.
This paper deals with the WASPIFA (Web-based Assistant System for Protein-protein Interaction and Function Analysis) system that can provide the comprehensive information on Protein-protein interaction and function concerned with function analysis. Different from existing systems for protein function and protein-protein interaction analysis, which provide fragmentary information restricted to specific field, our system furnishes end-user with comprehensive and synthetic information on the input sequence to be analyzed, including function and annotation information, domain information, and interaction relationship information. The synthetic information that our system contains as local databases has been extracted from many resources related to function, annotation, motif and domain by various pre-processing. Employing our system, end-users can evaluate and judge the synthetic results to do protein interaction and function analysis effectively. In addition, the WASPIFA system is equipped with automatic system management and data update function that facilitates system manager to maintain and manage it efficiently.
This study aimed to investigate the role of domain-specific causal mechanism information and domain-general conditional probability in young children's causal reasoning on psychology and biology. Participants were 121 3-year-olds and 121 4-year-olds recruited from seven childcare centers in Seoul, Kyonggi Province, and Busan. After participants watched moving pictures on psychological and biological phenomena, they were asked to choose appropriate cause and justify their choices. Results of this study were as follows: First, young children made different inferences according to domain-specific causal mechanisms. Second, the developmental level of causal mechanisms has a gap between psychology and biology, and biological knowledge was proved to be separate from psychological knowledge during the preschool period. Third, young children's causal reasoning was different depending on the interaction effect of domain-specific mechanisms and domain-general conditional probability: children could make more inferences based on domain-specific causal mechanisms if conditional probability between domain-appropriate cause and effect was evident. To conclude, it can be inferred that the role of domain-specific causal mechanisms and domain-general conditional probability is not competitive but complementary in young children's causal reasoning.

In this paper, the forced vibration problem of an Euler-Bernoulli beam that is joined with a semi-infinite field of a compressible fluid is considered as a boundary value problem (BVP). This BVP includes two partial differential equations (PDE) and some boundary conditions (BC), which are introduced comprehensively. After that, the closed-form solution of this fluid-structure interaction problem is obtained in the frequency domain. Some mathematical techniques are utilized, and two unknown functions of the BVP, including the beam displacement at each section and the fluid dynamic pressure at all points, are attained. These functions are expressed as an infinite series and evaluated quantitatively for a real example in the results section. In addition, finite element analysis is carried out for comparison.
This paper presents a new approach to simulate fluid-solid interaction problems involving non-matching interfaces. The coupling between fluid and solid domains with dissimilar finite element meshes consisting of 4-node quadrilateral elements is achieved by using the interface element method (IEM). Conditions of compatibility between fluid and solid meshes are satisfied exactly by introducing the interface elements defined on interfacing regions. Importantly, a consistent transfer of loads through matching interface element meshes guarantees the present method to be an efficient approach of the solution strategy to fluid-solid interaction problems. An arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) description is adopted for the fluid domain, while for the solid domain an updated Lagrangian formulation is considered to accommodate finite deformations of an elastic structure. The stabilized equal order velocity-pressure elements for incompressible flows are used in the motion of fluids. Fully coupled equations are solved simultaneously in a single computational domain. Numerical results are presented for fluid-solid interaction problems involving nonmatching interfaces to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology.
In the present paper, a direct forcing/fictitious domain (DF/FD) level set method is proposed to simulate the FSI (fluid-solid interaction) in two-phase flow. The main idea is to combine the direct-forcing/fictitious domain (DF/FD) method with the level set method in the Cartesian coordinates. The DF/FD method is a non-Lagrange-multiplier version of a distributed Lagrange multiplier/fictitious domain (DLM/FD) method. This method does not sacrifice the accuracy and robustness by employing a discrete ${\delta}$ (Dirac delta) function to transfer quantities between the Eulerian nodes and Lagrangian points explicitly as the immersed boundary method. The advantages of this approach are the simple concept, easy implementation, and utilization of the original governing equation without modification. Simulations of various water-entry problems have been conducted to validate the capability and accuracy of the present method in solving the FSI in two-phase flow. Consequently, the present results are found to be in good agreement with those of previous studies.

In this paper, we propose a probabilistic framework to predict the interaction probability of proteins. The notion of domain combination and domain combination pair is newly introduced and the prediction model in the framework takes domain combination pair as a basic unit of protein interactions to overcome the limitations of the conventional domain pair based prediction systems. The framework largely consists of prediction preparation and service stages. In the prediction preparation stage, two appearance pro-bability matrices, which hold information on appearance frequencies of domain combination pairs in the interacting and non-interacting sets of protein pairs, are constructed. Based on the appearance probability matrix, a probability equation is devised. The equation maps a protein pair to a real number in the range of 0 to 1. Two distributions of interacting and non-interacting set of protein pairs are obtained using the equation. In the prediction service stage, the interaction probability of a protein pair is predicted using the distributions and the equation. The validity of the prediction model is evaluated fur the interacting set of protein pairs in Yeast organism and artificially generated non-interacting set of protein pairs. When 80% of the set of interacting protein pairs in DIP database are used as foaming set of interacting protein pairs, very high sensitivity(86%) and specificity(56%) are achieved within our framework.
