A 5-month old Shih Tzu was diagnosed with congenital elbow luxation and uniapical complex angular deformity of the radius. Single radial oblique and dynamic ulnar osteotomies were performed, using patient-specific 3D-printed osteotomy guide. External skeletal fixation was maintained for three weeks to prevent re-luxation of elbow joint. Three months after the surgery, objective gait analysis indicated markedly improved limb function. In addition, radiograph showed improved congruity of elbow joint and appropriate bone healing. In dogs with congenital radial head luxation and concurrent complex angular deformity, a single oblique osteotomy might be a viable option to preserve bone length and correct the luxation of elbow joint.

There are many reports that these implant surface treatments may affect to cellular reaction in the surface of implant. This study was done by installing the 8 type implant with the variable surface treatment, used or developed, in the mandible of the mature dog to evaluate how the method of surface treatment of the implant can affect to the bone healing by analyzing histologically and histomorphometrically and find out bone healing appearance periodically after installing implant. By using the 8 type implants which have the different surface treatment, 72 implants were installed on the mandible of 9 mature dogs, and 3 dogs were sacrificed on every 2, 4, 8 weeks. After making bone fragment by cutting and managing, we analyzed histologically, then compared with BIC(Bone to implant contact) for the histomorphometrical analysis. In the result of histological analysis, there was large amount of bone formation in good state on the adjacent area of implant in the 2 weeks testing group. At 4 weeks, although there was general bone formation, the new bone was separated with the basal bone. At 8 weeks, the new bone became matured and connected tightly to the basal bone. There was no difference in the each surface of 8 implants. In the result of histomorphometrical analysis, 2 weeks group had considerably lower value than 4 and 8 weeks group, and there was no difference between 4 and 8 weeks group. There was no difference in the each surface treatment of implants.

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of membrane exposure on new bone formation when guided bone regeneration with perforated titanium membrane on atrophic alveolar ridge. The present study attempted to establish a GBR model for four adult beagle dog premolar. Intra-marrow penetration defects were created on the alveolar ridge(twelve weeks after extraction) on the mandibular premolar teeth in the beagle dogs. Space providing perforated titanium membrane with various graft material were implanted to provide for GBR. The graft material were demineralized bovine bone(DBB), Irradiated cancellous bone(ICB) and demineralized human bone powder(DFDB). The gingival flap were advanced to cover the membranes and sutured. Seven sites experienced wound failure within 2-3weeks postsurgery resulting in membrane exposure. The animals were euthanized at 4 weeks postsurgery for histologic and histometric analysis. The results of this study were as follows: 1. There was little new bone formation at 4 weeks postsurgery. irrespectively of membrane exposure. 2. There was significant relationship between membrane exposure and bone graft resorption(P<0.05), but no relation between membrane exposure and infiltrated connective tissue. 3. There was much bone graft resorption on DFDB than ICB and DBB. 4. The less exposure was on the perforated titanium membrane, the more dense infiltrated connective tissue was filled under the membrane when grafted with ICB and DBB. but there was no relationship between the rate of membrane exposure and the percentage of infiltrated connective tissue area and no relationship between the percentage of the area in the infiltrated connective tissue and in the residual bone graft. Within the above results, bone formation may be inhibited when membrane was exposed and ICB and DBB were more effective than DFDB as a bone graft material when guided bone regeneration.
Implant stability is the key to long-term successful outcome for osseointegrated implants. To evaluate the initial healing response of bone around HA-coated implants without primary bone contact. 21 HA-coated thread type implants(STERI-OSS?) were placed in the femurs of 5 mongrel dogs, about 1-year old. Implants, 8 mm in length and 3.8mm(experimental 1group), 5.0mm(experimental 2group) and 6.0mm(control group) in diameter, were inserted after 3 holes of 6.0mm in diameter and 10mm in depth were prepared in the surgical sites each dog. Implants were supported by only nonresorbable membrane($Teflon^{(R)}$), in order to prevent the ingrowth of upper soft tissue into the gap between bone and implant, and to maintain each implant to be positioned in the center of the drilled hole. 9 implants with different diameters were inserted in 3 dogs for histologic observation, and 12 implants were inserted in 2 dogs for mobility test and removal torque test. Fluorescent dyes were injected for the observation of new bone formation in order of $Terramycin^{(R)}$, Arizarin $Red^{(R)}$, and $Calcein^{(R)}$ at an interval of 2 weeks. 3 dogs were sacrificed for histologic observation at 4, 8, and 12-week after placement. Light microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy were used to qualitatively characterize the bone around HA-coated implant. 2 dogs were sacrificed for mobility test($Periotest^{(R)}$, Simens AG, Bensheim, Germany) and removal torque test($Autograph^{(R)}$ AGS-1000D series, Japan) at 8 and 12-week after placement The results were as follows: 1. Histologic observation showed that osseointegration occurred to both control and experimental groups as time lapse, but delayed bone healing was revealed in 3.8mm group (experimental 1group), compared to contrtol group and 5.0mm group (experimental 2group). 2. The mobility test showed that the experimental groups had no distinguishable movement during experimental periods of 8 and 12-week, and there was no difference in mobility depending on the gap between bone and implant, and time lapse. 3. The removal torque forces were increased depended on the gaps decreasing between bone and implant, and time lapse. The results suggest that HA-coated implant without primary bone contact, based on guided bone regeneration could obtain its stability in all experimental groups as time lapse, but bone healing was delayed in experimental group of 3.8mm. And the results suggested that studies on correlationship between mobility test and removal torque test for implant stability would be necessary.
Using barrier membrane, guided bone regeneration(GBR) and guided tissue regeneration(GTR) of periodontal tissue are now widely studied and good results were reported. In bone regeneration, not all cases gained good results and in some cases using GTR, bone were less regenerated than that of control. The purpose of this study is to search for the method to improve the success rate of GBR and GTR by examination of the cause of the failure. For these study, rats and beagle dogs were used. In rat study, 5mm diameter round hole was made on parietal bone of the rat and 10mm diameter of bioresorbable membrane was placed on the bone defects and sutured. In 1 ,2, 4 weeks later, the rats were sacrificed and Masson-Trichrome staining was done and inspected under light microscope for guided bone regeneration. In dog study, $3{\times}4mm^2$ Grade III furcation defect was made at the 3rd and 1th premolar on mandible of 6 beagle dogs. The defects were covered by bioresorbable membrane extending 2-3mm from the defect margin. The membrane was sutured and buccal flap was covered the defect perfectly. In 2, 4. 8 weeks later. the animals were sacrificed and undecalcified specimens were made and stained by multiple staining method. In rats. there was much amount of new bone formation at 2 weeks. and in 4 weeks specimen, bony defect was perfectly dosed and plenty amount of new bone marrow was developed. In some cases, there were failures of guided bone regeneration. In beagle dogs, guided tissue regeneration was incomplete when the defect was collapsed by the membrane itself and when the rate of resorption was so rapid than expected. The cause of the failure in GBR and GTR procedure is that 1) the membrane was not tightly seal the bony defects. If the sealing was not perfect, fibrous connective tissue infiltrate into the defect and inhibit the new bone formation and regeneration. 2) the membrane was too tightly attached to the tissue and then there was no space to be regenerated. In conclusion, the requirements of the membrane for periodontal tissue and bone regeneration are the biocompatibility, degree of sealingness, malleability. space making and manipulation. In this animal study. space making for new bone and periodontal ligament, and sealing the space might be the most important point for successful accomplishment of GBR and GTR.

This study evaluated the effects of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene powder (mPP) contents on the bond properties of cement mortar and nonpolar macro synthetic fibers (macro synthetic fiber). Dog-bone bond tests were performed to evaluate the bond performance of macro synthetic fiber in cement mortar with varying amounts of mPP (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% of cement weight). The bond properties (pullout behavior, pullout load and interface toughness) of macro synthetic fiber in cement mortar increased as the mPP contents was increased. The bond properties increased with the mPP contents. The microstructure of macro synthetic fiber surface was examined after the pullout test to analyze the frictional resistant force according to mPP contents during the pullout process of macro synthetic fiber in cement mortar. The scratched of macro synthetic fiber increased with the mPP contents.
In this study, the effect of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber volume fraction on the pullout behavior of structural synthetic fiber in hybrid structural synthetic fiber and PVA fiber cement composites are presented. Pullout behavior of the hybrid fiber cement composites and structural synthetic fiber were determined by dog-bone bond tests. Test results found that the addition of PVA fiber can effectively enhance the structural synthetic fiber cement based composites pullout behavior, especially in fiber interface toughness. Pullout test results of the structural synthetic fiber showed the interface toughness between structural synthetic fiber and PVA fiber reinforced cement composites increases with the volume fraction of PVA fiber. The microstructural observation confirms the incorporation of PVA fiber can effectively enhance the interface toughness mechanism of structural synthetic fiber and PVA fiber reinforced cement composites.
In order to investigate the healing effect on inflammation and bone regeneration of low power density laser radiation in dogs, experimental periodontitis was made in dog mandibular 3rd, 4th premolars. All teeth were classified with four groups of two experimental group and control groups. The second group were irradiated on periodontitis site and the first group were control. The fourth group were irradiated on periodontitis site flap operation and the third group were flap control. Experimental groups were irradiated with GaAs low power density laser of pulse wave and continuous wave of 904nm every day by five days respectively and then control group and experimental groups were evaluated by histo-pathological study. The results were as follows : 1. Experimental periodontits site of dog were irradiated with GaAs low power laser results in reducing of pseudoepitheliomatous proliferation and inflammation at light microscope. 2. After irradiation with low power density laser, experimental groups were revealed that PDL forming activity were increased and newly formed collagen deposition were observed. 3. Low power density lsaer irradiation on experimental periodontits site after flap operation showed that decreasing of inflammation, reducing of osteoclast activity. Capillary proliferation, reduction of pseudoepitheliomatous proliferation. 4. After irradiation with low power density laser on flap experimental site, experimental groups were revealed that newly formed collagen in periodontal ligament and alveolar bone were detected on MT staining.
A 15-year-old spayed female Miniature Schnauzer was presented for unilateral foreleg lameness and pain. On physical examination, left elbow joint swelling and stiffness were identified. On a computed tomography (CT) scan, a periosteal reaction of the left humerus from the distal metaphysis to the epiphysis and cortical destruction of the medial condyle was observed. Based on blood tests, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry, it was concluded as a skeletal histiocytic sarcoma. Since the patient's pain was not controlled despite application of a fentanyl patch, a left forelimb amputation was decided upon as part of the palliative therapy. Metronomic chemotherapy with toceranib phosphate and pamidronate was initiated. Toceranib was administered for 3 months without the development of any adverse effects except mild neutropenia. However, 3 months after initiating treatment, the toceranib was discontinued due to moderate gastrointestinal disturbances. Over the next 2 months, a left mandibular bone mass and cortical bone destruction in the bilateral tibia and tarsal joint were identified on CT. The patient became unwilling to eat and was noted to have severe skeletal pain. The anorexia and lethargy were progressively worsening and the owner decided to euthanize the patient. A necropsy was performed and the patient was definitively diagnosed with disseminated histiocytic sarcoma based on histopathologic and immunohistochemical analyses. This report describes a Miniature Schnauzer dog with DHS managed with surgical removal and metronomic chemotherapy with toceranib that survived with an improved quality of life for 7 months.
