  • This paper proposes an efficient algorithm of NaiveBayes without loss of its accuracy. The proposed method uses the transposition of category vectors, and minimizes the computation of the probability of NaiveBayes. The proposed method was implemented on the existing framework of the text categorization, so called, AI::Categorizer and it was compared with the conventional NaiveBayes with the well-known data, Router-21578. The comparisons show that the proposed method outperforms NaiveBayes about two times with respect to the executing time.

  • Due to the recent proliferation of the internet, it is broadly granted that the necessity of the automatic document categorization has been on the rise. Since it is a heavy time-consuming work and takes too much manpower to process and classify manually, we need a system that categorizes them automatically as their contents. In this paper, we propose the automatic E-mail response system that is based on 2 hierarchical document clustering methods. One is to get the final result from the classifier trained seperatly within each class, after clustering the whole documents into 3 groups so that the first classifier categorize the input documents as the corresponding group. The other method is that the system classifies the most distinct classes first as their similarity, successively. Neural networks have been adopted as classifiers, we have used dendrograms to show the hierarchical aspect of similarities between classes. The comparison among the performances of hierarchical and non-hierarchical classifiers tells us clustering methods have provided the classification efficiency.

  • Automatic text categorization is a problem of assigning predefined categories to free text documents. In order to classify text documents, we have to extract good features from them. In previous researches, a text document is commonly represented by the frequency of each feature. But there is a difference between important and unimportant sentences in a text document. It has an effect on the importance of features in a text document. In this paper, we measure the importance of sentences in a text document using text summarizing techniques. A text document is represented by features with different weights according to the importance of each sentence. To verify the new method, we constructed Korean news group data set and experiment our method using it. We found that our new method gale a significant improvement over a basis system for our data sets.

  • This research proposes an alternative approach to machine learning based ones for text categorization. For using machine learning based approaches for any task of text mining, documents should be encoded into numerical vectors; it causes two problems: huge dimensionality and sparse distribution. Although there are various tasks of text mining such as text categorization, text clustering, and text summarization, the scope of this research is restricted to text categorization. The idea of this research is to avoid the two problems by encoding a document or documents into a table, instead of numerical vectors. Therefore, the goal of this research is to improve the performance of text categorization by proposing approaches, which are free from the two problems.

  • As the amount of electronic documents increases explosively, automatic text categorization methods are needed to identify those of interest. Most methods use machine learning techniques based on a word set. This paper introduces a new method, called FPTC (FP-Tree based Text Classifier). FP-Tree is a data structure used in data-mining. In this paper, a method of storing text sentence patterns in the FP-Tree structure and classifying text using the patterns is presented. In the experiments conducted, we use our algorithm with a #Mutual Information and Entropy# approach to improve performance. We also present an analysis of the algorithm via an ordinary differential categorization method.

  • In this paper, we propose a dynamic document classification method which breaks away from existing document classification method with artificial categorization rules focusing on suppliers and has changing categorization rules according to users' needs or social trends. The core of this dynamic document classification method lies in the fact that it creates classification criteria real-time by using topic modeling techniques without standardized category rules, which does not force users to use unnecessary frames. In addition, it can also search the details through the relevance analysis by calculating the relationship between the words that is difficult to grasp by word frequency alone. Rather than for logical and systematic documents, this method proposed can be used more effectively for situation analysis and retrieving information of unstructured data which do not fit the category of existing classification such as VOC (Voice Of Customer), SNS and customer reviews of Internet shopping malls and it can react to users' needs flexibly. In addition, it has no process of selecting the classification rules by the suppliers and in case there is a misclassification, it requires no manual work, which reduces unnecessary workload.

  • This paper proposes a virtual relevant document technique in the teaming phase for text categorization. The method uses a simple transformation of relevant documents, i.e. making virtual documents by combining document pairs in the training set. The virtual document produced by this method has the enriched term vector space, with greater weights for the terms that co-occur in two relevant documents. The experimental results showed a significant improvement over the baseline, which proves the usefulness of the proposed method: 71% improvement on TREC-11 filtering test collection and 11% improvement on Routers-21578 test set for the topics with less than 100 relevant documents in the micro average F1. The result analysis indicates that the addition of virtual relevant documents contributes to the steady improvement of the performance.

  • We describe a new method for text categorization using TextRank algorithm. Text categorization is a problem that over one pre-defined categories are assigned to a text document. TextRank algorithm is a graph-based ranking algorithm. If we consider that each word is a vertex, and co-occurrence of two adjacent words is a edge, we can get a graph from a document. After that, we find important words using TextRank algorithm from the graph and make feature which are pairs of words which are each important word and a word adjacent to the important word. We use classifiers: SVM, Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayesian classifier, Maximum Entropy Model, and k-NN classifier. We use non-cross-posted version of 20 Newsgroups data set. In consequence, we had an improved performance in whole classifiers, and the result tells that is a possibility of TextRank algorithm in text categorization.

  • WWW is an important method for retrieving or providing informations. Not only the amount of information but also it is widely located on the web, it is difficult for users to get or search information. Furthermore, to use search engine is also inconvenient, because it just uses a keyword without concerning a user's interest. At this point, we propose a design of web agent that uses the automatic document categorization system and user's profile concerning with a user's interest, so the agent can actively provide a information.
