  • The diurnal variation in pollen vertical distributions in the atmosphere was observed by a surface-based lidar remote sensing technique. Aerosol extinction coefficient and depolarization ratio at 532 nm were obtained from lidar measurements in spring ($4^{th}$ May - $2^{nd}$ June) 2009 at Gwangju Institute of Science & Technology (GIST) located in Gwangju, Korea ($35.15^{\circ}E$, $126.53^{\circ}N$). Unusual variations of depolarization ratio were observed for six days from $4^{th}$ to $9^{th}$ May. Depolarization ratios varied from 0.08 to 0.14 were detected at the low altitude in the morning. The altitude with those high depolarization ratios was increased up to 1.5 - 2.0 km at the time interval between 12:00 and 14:00 LT and then decreased. The temporal variations in high values of depolarization ratios from lidar measurements show good agreement in patterns with the sampled pollen concentrations measured using the Burkard trap sampler. This study demonstrates that the pollen distribution data obtained by lidar measurements can be a useful tool for investigating spatial and temporal characteristic of pollen particles.

  • The effects of methyl isobutyl ketone(MIBK)/ethanol(EtOH) solvent mixtures on the dispension, particle size distribution and rheology of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ nonaqueous suspensions were investigated by measuring sedimentation density and viscosity. The sedimentation density of $Al_2$O$_3$ and ZrO$_2$ particles increased in MIBK-rich($\geq$60 vol%) solvents with 'Hypermer' KD-1 as a dispersant. The ball-milled suspensions in 80MIBK/20EtOH(vol%) solvent exhibited the narrow and unimodal particle size distribution. Although all Suspensions exhibited the Pseduo-Plastic flow(Shear thinning) the shear thinning behavior was somewhat different depending on the mixture ratio of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ and MIBK/EtOH. Under a given shear rate( <300 s$^{-1}$ for $Al_2$O$_3$; <3000 s$^{-1}$ for ZrO$_2$) the strongest shear thinning appeared in the $Al_2$O$_3$ and ZrO$_2$ suspensions with pure MIBK solvent. The shear thinning was nearly independable on the mixture ratio of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ in case of using the identical solvent(80MIBK/20EtOH, vol%).

  • Particulate matters of PM2.5, particularly focusing on 0.1~1 ㎛ decrease the efficiency of dust-collector due to the brownian-motion. This study is to verify the effect of coagulant on the particle size distributions of potassium and PM2.5. The activated coagulant was spayed to the coal fired fluidized bed combustion boiler by the weight ratio of 1,200 : 1 = coal : coagulant, and the size distributions of captured particles at both the cyclone (FP) and electrostatic precipitator (EP) were measured. As the result of XRP analysis, the potassium content of FP increased to 13.33% (averagely from 1.65% to 1.87%) and, in EP at 17.68% (averagely from 1.65% to 2.03%). And it was confirmed by the particle size distribution analyzer and SEM image analysis that the distribution rates of PM2.5 decreased at 89.53% on average in FP, and at 88.57% in EP. The total dust concentration (mg/㎥) confirmed by tele-monitering system (TMS) decreased during the primary test from 2.6 to 1.7~1.9 and also the secondary test from 2.9 to 1.7~1.9.

  • Physical characteristics of aggregates affect the workability and strength of mortar and concrete, which include their fineness ratio, particle size distribution and water absorption. The workability of construction materials decreases if the incorporated fine aggregates show improper size distribution of their particles. This study shows the particle size effect on the rheological behavior of mortar and provides basic information for evaluating its workability. A mini-slump flow test was adopted to evaluate the workability of mortar. In addition, its plastic viscosity and yield stress were measured using a rheometer for building materials. The sand samples were prepared by sieving river sand and sorting out with their particle sizes. As a result, it was observed that the fines less than 0.7 mm increases the yield stress and plastic viscosity of the mortar samples. If the fines are less than 0.34 mm, the water absorption of the fines dominates change on the workability.

  • Vertical electrical sounding and 2D electrical resistivity survey were applied for evaluating the characteristics of alluvial layers at a groundwater artificial recharge site. The fine particles in alluvial layer, main target layer of groundwater artificial recharge, may cause clogging phenomena. In this case, electrical resistivity method is an effective technique to verify the spatial distribution of low-resistivity layers, such as saturated silts and clays. On the other hand, much attention should be paid to interpret the resistivity data in unconsolidated layers, because thick clayey overburden sometimes produces a masking effect on underlying interbedded resistive sands and gravels. Considering these points, we designed 35 points arranged in a grid form for vertical electrical sounding and 10 lines for 2D electrical resistivity survey, and concentrated our effort on enhancing the vertical and horizontal resolution of resistivity images. According to the results, 15 meters thick layers consisting of sands and gravels are located in 30 meters below ground. And the spatial distribution of silts and clays are mapped, which may cause clogging. Consequently, this approach can contribute to design and determine the location and depth of injection and observation wells for groundwater artificial recharge.

  • Water quality constituents, and particle size distributions were characterized in urban bridge road runoff, Bridge road runoff contains significant loads of micro-particles, heavy metals and organic constituents. Bridge road runoff was monitored on four sites of four and six lanes bridge road areas along with traffic volume. A total seven storm events were monitored to characterize the bridge road runoff. The quantity of road runoff and quality constituents, including chemical oxygen demand(COD), suspended solids(SS), total nitrogen(T-N), ortho-phosphorus$(PO_4-P)$, total phosphorus(T-P), and particle size distribution were analyzed. The results indicate that the concentrations of SS, COD, T-N and T-P ranges were $35\sim2,390$ mg/L, $40\sim1,274$ mg/L, $0.03\sim21.25$ mg/L, and $0.05\sim4.58$ mg/L, respectively. And the results showed that the mean range of particle size and $D_{90}$ for bridge road runoff were $4.75\sim14.05{\mu}m$ and $17.33\sim58.15{\mu}m$, respectively.

  • We investigate the optical properties of aerosols over Gongju by an indirect method using the pound measurement, Sky-radiometer. The analysis period is from January to December, 2004. Skyrad. pack.3 is used to estimate the optical properties, such as the aerosol optical thickness (AOT), single scattering albedo (SSA), ${\AA}ngstron$ exponent $({\alpha})$ and size distribution, of aerosols from the ground measured radiance data. And qualify control is applied to minimize the cloud-contaminated data and improve the quality of analysis results. The 12-month average of AOT, ${\alpha}$, and SSA are 0.46, 1.14, and 0.91, respectively. The average volume spectra of aerosols shows a bi-modal distribution, the first peak at fine mode and the second peak at coarse mode. AOT and coarse particles clearly increases while SSA decreases during the Asian dust events. The optical properties of aerosols at Gongju vary with?seasons, but those are not influenced by the wind direction.

  • To improve the properties of non-waxy rice flours for baking, soaked-wet milled rice flour (SWRF) was adjusted moisture content (MC) to 30 and 50 % and heated at 50 and $70^{\circ}C$ in a shaking water bath for 6 and 18 hrs, respectively. Moisture-heat treated rice flours were investigated with regard to particle size distribution, and morphological, physicochemical and pasting properties for comparing dry and wet milled flours. The particle size of rice flour treated with 30% MC was distributed between $4-20{\mu}m\;and\;100-200{\mu}m$, like SWRF. The particles above $200{\mu}m$ in the flour were produced at higher heating temperature. By SEM, starch granules were found in the rice flours treated with 30% MC, who whereas aggregated starch granules were shown in the flours treated with 50% MC. Moisture-heat treatment using higher MC and heating temperature decreased the lightness and increased the yellowness of non-waxy rice flours. Water binding capacity of 30% moisture treated rice flour was similar to that of SWRF. In the same moisture treated rice flour, swelling power was higher, but solubility was lower at $50^{\circ}C$ than at $70^{\circ}C$. The initial pasting temperature by RVA increased after moisture-heat treatment. The peak viscosity of moisture-heat treated rice flour was higher for 30% moisture than that of the others. The rice flour treated with 30% MC and heated at $50^{\circ}C$ showed low setback and increased stability for retrogradation.

  • Dispersion polymerization of methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, and glycidyl methacrylate were performed in supercritical $CO_2$ at $80\;^{\circ}C$ and 346 bar. Glycidyl methacrylate linked poly(dimethylsiloxane) (GMS-PDMS) surfactant, which was prepared by linking glycidyl methacrylate to monoglycidyl ether terminated PDMS with amino-propyltriethoxysilane, was used as surfactant for the dispersion polymerization in $CO_2$. The yield of the poly(alkyl acrylate) polymers, synthesized in $CO_2$ medium, decreased as the alkyl tail of the acrylate monomers increased. Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) and poly(methyl acrylate) were produced in bead form whereas poly(ethyl acrylate) and poly(butyl acrylate) were viscous liquid. The poly(glycidyl methacrylate) particles had a number average diameter of 2.45 ${\mu}m$ and monodisperse distribution. The poly(methyl acrylate) had a number average diameter of 0.52 ${\mu}m$ and the particle size distribution was bimodal. The glass transition temperatures ($T_g$) of the poly(glycidyl methacrylate) and the poly(alkyl acrylate) products were 4~9 K higher than the $T_g$ of the corresponding acrylate polymers synthesized in conventional processes.

  • A method for improving the warpage of the plastic part is a method of removing residual stress of the plastic product. that a non-uniform cooling are appeared in the injection molding process make uniform cooling. this study was developed the Rapid heating and cooling device used peltier module for uniform cooling. Make the Rapid heating and cooling device(RCHD), for Traditional water cooling device(TWCD) method and the Rapid heating and cooling method warpage were compared and were analyzed and the materials used amorphous ABS polymer. various warpage were compared for the process parameters such as packing pressure, packing time, resin temperature, mold temperature, In the amorphous ABS polymer, TWCD method has higher warpage than RCHD method and show the result to be a bit more uniform cooling. The distribution state of the ABS polymer was confirmed Through the Scanning electron microscope. In the TWCD method the distribution state of the polymer be densely distributed, and RCHS method be distributed wider than TWCD method. this is that injection molded parts be seen that cooling was made uniformly, As the temperature of the mold is gradually progress, Particles of the polymer is increased this is that internal stress was reduced.
