  • Purpose - This study aims to investigate the current state of distribution terminology usage by retailers and consumers nationwide, and to suggest a practical improvement plan for its standardization. The Korean distribution industry is closely related to consumers' daily lives. However, in reality, there exists a gap among producers, distributors, and consumers in terms of the definition, understanding, and perception of the terminology. Therefore, standardizing this terminology is essential for more smooth communication. This paper suggests the necessity of committing overall research and survey activities to the actual conditions of using Korean distribution terminology by organizations and their respective management situations, and further, the necessity of probing the problem and its measures in line with the objective and mission of the "Fundamental Law of the Korean Language." Research design, data, and methodology - This study's scope is limited to wholesale and retail including some information systems. First, the study covers most written material including lexicons and glossary of distribution terminology, university textbooks and teaching material for national certificate of qualification, and related laws and ordinances. Second, the survey covers retailers' management situations by store format. The retailers used as the sample for the survey include department stores, discount stores, SSM, and convenience stores. Altogether, 20 specialists were interviewed in their respective sectors or retail formats. Finally, the project team surveyed a sample of 1,300 consumers nationwide on 50 distribution terms mainly used by consumers, including those about awareness, understanding, usage, and attitude. Results - In total, 1,249 terms are drawn through literature research including distribution terminology used in the related literature, glossary and lexicons, distribution terminology in textbooks, and legal terminology. A classified table comprises four large categories including general distribution, distribution marketing, distribution information, and merchandise. The results of the three-step research including literature survey, field survey of retailers, and consumer survey were advised to be screened by academia (retail associations, faculty etc.), retailers (major retail management by store format), retail specialists and consultants, consumers, and Korean linguists. In total, 1,300 questionnaires for 50 terms of the distribution terminology closely associated with consumers were distributed to subjects nationwide. Conclusions - The desired and expected results from this study are summarized from three perspectives as follows: First, from retailers' perspective, a new concept, or coinage of new terms of the distribution industry stems from advanced countries such as America and Europe. However, the original meaning and definition are diluted and distorted with changes in the language users' situations and context. This study provides basic guidelines for standardization of distribution terms used among various retail formats in most daily life situations that consumers encounter. Second, from the nation's perspective, this study suggests optimal choices of distribution terminology in the context of laws and ordinances regarding concerned Ministries. Last, from the consumers' perspective, this paper enables consumers to understand and use distribution terms properly in their daily life.

  • This paper focuses on the terminology of the dictionary as an encyclopedic element in the Buddhist language. The previous study on Buddhist language can be divided into a philosophical approach to the language itself, a review of the linguistic perspective of a specific monk, and a linguistic examination of the Buddhist language. The linguistic examination of the Buddhist language is further divided into analysis of certain Buddhist scriptures, and a study of vocabulary used throughout the Buddhist sphere. The Buddhist vocabulary in the existing Korean dictionary is found in specialized areas such as name, place name, history, and Buddhism. By advancing the generalized words of the terminologies, the meanings of the terminologies and the general words are described as polysemy. It is possible to identify the degree of transition from terminology to general word depending on the distribution of senses. In the case of Buddhist vocabulary, the usage as a general language and as a Buddhist term was given priority, and vocabulary was also derived from a Buddhist term, although it was described as a general language. If a dictionary is changed according to the language unit it contains, the difference in a Buddhist terminology for each dictionary, and a conflict between the existing academic research result and the prior description, will need to be resolved through the collaboration of religious experts, linguists, and lexicographers.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the meaning and lexical morpheme of author keywords of humanities, social sciences, and art and sport in the Korea Ciation Index (KCI) and to propose a conceptual taxonomy of the author keywords. Four top-level concept categories such as 'Substance, Abstraction, General/Common, and Object' are replaced by seven more concrete categories such as 'object, action/function, property, theory/method, format/framework, general/common, and Instance'. In the middle and lower-level concept categories, the hierarchical structure is simplified and the unbalance of term distribution is reduced by creating, subdivision, integration, elimination, and movement of the categories. The result of the test based on the STNet shows that the replaced taxonomy of concept categories has the effects of making the term allocation more balanced and properties of terms more detailed.

The results of this study are as follows: 1. The terms used in middle school textbooks were found out to be 334, while those used in high school were 717. Total terms used were 870(759 kinds) and those recorded in the environmental terminology dictionary were 362 including synonyms. 2. Of those 870, 211 terms (24.25%) which were the same words have been used in interlinked connection with the Middle and High schools. While 136 terms(15.63%) have been used in the only middle, and 524 terms(60.23%) have been used in the only high schools. In middle and high school environmental text books 211 (24.25%) terms were the same interlinked terms. Of those extracted terms, 136(15.63%) were used in the middle school 'environmental' textbooks and in high school, 524(60.23%) were used in 'environmental science' book. These results shows that there is big gap between middle and high school contents and we will need more consideration in selecting the terms and better substance. 3. The same terminologies used in both middle and high schools were total number of 676. In those terms 257 kinds(76.26%) were used in middle school 'environmental' text books, and 563 kinds(78.52%) in high school 'environmental science' text books. Here are some details : 1) Terms used as same meaning but different in expression in middle school: 83 kinds, 192 terms (11.99%). 2) Differently expressed in the same text book : in middle school - 20 kinds(2.64%) in high school - 61 kinds(8.04%) 3) Differently expressed terms between middle and high school: 51 kinds(6.72%) 4) Same meaning in 3 expressions or more : 19 kinds 4. Of the examined terms 362(including 43 synonyms) were defined in environmental dictionary which is 41.8% of the total words. In the future specialization in utmost fields will be needed 5. When dividing those examined terms according to the middle and high school curriculum, the most terms were used in nature and pollution fields following environmental preserving, artificial environment, and environmenatal counterplan. In middle schools the most used terms were in the field of environment pollution, preservation, counterplan, and sanitation. These results reflects the education goals and objectives of middle schools. But for the middle school 'environment' curriculum moret uniform distribution are needed and for the high schools' 'environmental science' program, the fields in artificial environment, industrization, urbanization, and sanitation should be intensified.
