  • The loss minimization is one of the most important problems to save the operational cost in distribution systems. This paper presents an efficient method for optimal feeder reconfiguration of distribution systems. Chaos search algorithm (CSA) is used to reconfigure distribution systems so that active power losses are globally minimized with turning on/off sectionalizing switches. In optimization problem, the CSA searches the global optimal solution on the basis of regularity in chaotic motions and easily escapes from local or near optimal solution. The CSA is tested on 15 buses and 32 buses distribution systems, and the results indicate that it is able to determine appropriate switching options for global optimum reconfiguration.

  • This paper presents an efficient algorithm for loss reduction and load balancing by sectionalizing switch operation in large scale distribution system of radial type. We use Genetic algorithm and Kruskal algorithm to solve distribution system reconfiguration. Genetic algorithm is used to minimize objective function including loss and load balancing items. Kruskal algorithm is used to satisfy the radial condition of distribution system. The experimental results show that the proposed method has the ability to search a good solution regardless of initial configuration and size of system.

  • This paper proposes an effective approach based on binary coding Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to identify the switching operation plan for feeder reconfiguration. The proposed method considers the advantages and disadvantages of existing particle swarm optimization method and redefined the operators of PSO algorithm to fit the application field of distribution systems. Shift operator is proposed to construct the binary coding particle swarm optimization for feeder reconfiguration. A typical distribution system of Taiwan Power Company is used in this paper to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The test results show that the proposed method can apply to feeder reconfiguration problems more effectively and stably than existing method.

  • Thrusters are important actuators where air is rare. Since the maintenance or replacement of thrusters is not easy in such an environment, a thrusting system must be highly reliable. Redundant thrusters are used to meet the reliability requirement. In this paper, a reconfiguration problem for those redundant thrusters is discussed, especially the management or distribution logic of redundant thrusters is focused on. The logic has to be changed if faults occur at thrusters. Reconfiguration is to change the distribution logic to accommodate thrusters' faults. The authors propose a reconfiguration algorithm based on the linear programming method. The authors define the reconfiguration problem as an optimization problem. The performance index is a quantity related with total fuel consumption by thrusters. This algorithm can accommodate multiple faults. Numerical examples are given to show the advantage of the proposed algorithm over existing methods.

  • Electrical power distribution systems are critical links between the utility and customer. In general, power distribution systems have unbalanced feeders due to the unbalanced loading. The devices that dependent on balanced three phase supply are affected by the unbalanced feeders. This necessitates the balancing of feeders. The main objective of reconfiguration is to balance the loads among the phases subject to constraints such as load flow equations, capacity and voltage constraints and to reduce the real power loss, while subject to a radial network structure in which all loads must be energized. Therefore, the distribution system reconfiguration problem has been viewed as multi-objective problem. In this paper, the hybrid heuristic algorithm has been used for reconfiguration, which is the combination of fuzzy and greedy algorithms. The purpose of the introduction of greedy is to refrain the searching for the period of phase balancing. The incorporation of fuzzy helps to take up more objectives amid phase balancing in the searching. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through modified IEEE 33 bus and modified IEEE 125 bus radial distribution system.

  • This paper is described an expert system which performs the network reconfiguration in order to operate distribution systems optimally using heuristic rules. The proposed network reconfiguration is able to not only eliminate abnormal states such as overload of transformers/lines and low voltage violation, but also achieve minimum power loss and optimum load balancing under normal states. In order to apply the network reconfiguration efficiently, an expert system is adopted a best-first tree searching strategy on the basis of heuristics, and is implemented in AI language Turbo PROLOG. Several examples are used to illustrate concepts described above.

  • This paper proposes an expert system which can enhance the accuracy of real-time bus reconfiguration strategy by adopting local minimum tree search method and minimize the spreading effect of the fault by considering totally the operating condition when a main transformer fault occurs in the automated substation. The local minimum tree search method to expand the best-first search method. This method has an advantage which can improve the performance of solution within the limits of the real-time condition. The inference strategy proposed expert system consists of two stages. The first stage determines the switching candidate set by searching possible switching candidates starting from the main transformer or busbar related to the event. And, second stage determines the rational real-time bus reconfiguration strategy based on heuristic rules for the obtained switching candidate set. Also, this paper studies the generalized distribution substation modelling using graph theory and a substation database is designed based on the study result. The inference engine of the expert system and the substation database is implemented in MFC function of Visual C++. Finally, the performance and effectiveness of the proposed expert system is verified by comparing the best-first search solution and local minimum tree search solution based on diversity event simulations for typical distribution substation.

  • This paper presents a method for feeder reconfiguration in order to operate distribution systems efficiently using heuristic rules. The reconfiguration method presented here not only eliminates various abnormal states but also achieves minimum power loss and optimum load balance of the distribution feeders under normal operating condition transfering loads from one feeder to anoter applying the experiences of the experts. To implement the method effectively, a best-first tree searching strategy based on heuristics is used to evaluate the various load transfer alternatives. The development of a rule-based system aimed at the reduction of the search space is presented as a means of implementing the best-first searching strategy. The results of the computer simulation of the above procedure are as follows; 1) achieving minimum power loss of the distribution feeder adopting the optimum load transfer alternative. 2) Enhencing system reliability and achieving load balance through rational allocation of the feeder loads.
