  • Purpose - This paper examines whether product market competition in distribution and service industries is related to audit quality. This paper investigates, specifically, the relationship in distribution and service industries by using Herfindahl-Hirschman Index and audit quality measured by audit fee and audit hour. Research design, data, and methodology - Using 1,011 firm-year observations of listed companies from 2002 to 2016 in distribution and service industries, this study examines whether product market competition in distribution and service industries is related to audit quality. Results - This study finds that market competition in distribution and service industries is negatively related to audit quality and this negative relation is pronounced for the firms with high outside director groups. Further analysis suggests that the relationship between market competition and audit hours is no longer significant. Conclusions - This study extended the existing scope of the audit quality study by systematically analyzing the impact of industrial-level characteristics (i.e. market competition) in the distribution service industries on audit quality. This study, in other words, suggests the regulatory body consider the industrial-level characteristics of each industry in order to enhance audit quality.

  • This paper proposes the load distribution control allocation technique. The proposed method is designed by combining a conventional control allocation method with load distribution ability in order to reduce the stress acting on ailerons. By designing the weighting matrix as a function of the load distribution rule, the optimal deflection angles of each surface to satisfy both control goal and load distribution can be achieved. Moreover, rule based fault-tolerant control technique is also proposed. The rules are generated by considering both dominant control surfaces and the ratio of load distribution among surfaces. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated through numerical simulations.

  • We have mined each of the five A. thaliana chromosomes for the presence of simple sequence repeats (SSRs) and developed custom perl scripts to examine their distribution and abundance in relation to genomic position, local G/C content and location within and around transcribed sequences. The distribution of repeats and G/C content with respect to genomic regions (exons, UTRs, introns, intergenic regions and proximity to expressed genes) are shown. SSRs show a non-random distribution across the genome and a strong association within and around transcribed sequences, while G/C density is associated specifically with the coding portions of transcribed sequences. SSR motif repeat number shows a high degree of variation for each SSR type and a high degree of motif sequence bias reflecting local genome sequence composition. PCR primers suitable for the amplification of identified SSRs have been designed where possible, and are available for further studies.

  • Purpose: We sought to investigate the operation status of internal accounting control systems in the distribution and service industries and verify whether investing in internal accounting personnel significantly influences the quality of the companies' financial reporting. Research design, data and methodology: We identified descriptive statistics and performed a univariate analysis. Furthermore, a regression analysis verified the impact of investing in internal accounting personnel on the absolute value of discretionary accruals, a proxy for financial reporting quality. Results: Distribution and service companies allocated a significantly higher number of accountants to their internal accounting control systems than companies in other industries. We also confirmed that the absolute value of discretionary accruals significantly decreased as the average working experience of internal accounting personnel in distribution and service companies, in months, increased. Conclusions: In this study, we confirmed that distribution and service companies are devoting efforts to establishing internal accounting control systems and found that financial reporting quality is more effectively controlled as companies allocate more experienced personnel in their internal accounting control system.

  • This study investigates the spatial distribution characteristics of Korean fashion industries during the last decade, in which the economic geography of fashion industries has changed dynamically with economic globalization and "thus resulted in increased" demand "of" diversification. In particular, this study examines the spatial distribution patterns of fashion industries in the Seoul metropolitan area where fashion industries are highly agglomerated. For the purpose, this study applies Moran's I Index of spatial autocorrelation analysis for seven functional sectors of fashion industries related to fashion production. The global and local agglomeration patterns are examined for each functional sector. The results clarify the distinction in the spatial agglomeration patterns among the seven functional sectors of fashion industries in the Seoul Metropolitan area. Logit models are developed to examine the interrelationships among functional sectors in their spatial agglomeration distribution patterns. By conducting binary logistic regression analysis, we find out how the spatial agglomeration of each functional sector is related to the others.

  • The early studies on the cultural industries had mainly emphasized the viewpoint of "efficiency" based on the "flexible specialization" theory, but they have gradually shed light on the viewpoint of "creativity": creative human resources and various networks generating creative energies. Despite the importance of these studies, it is impossible to explain every cultural industrial agglomeration phenomena from specific and few viewpoints due to the diversity of each cultural industry. This study describes the dissimilarity of agglomeration factors between the Japanese animation and home video game industries which form salient agglomeration in the same region. Both industries share similar characteristics with industrial agglomeration of SMEs in Tokyo and close inter-firm relationships. However, they differ in their historical development paths and each firm's behavior and strategy because of their own distribution systems and production processes. In particular, the difference in distribution systems clearly affects whether a company values "efficiency" factors of agglomeration advantage or "creativity" factors of that in case of locational choice. The distribution sector of the cultural industry, compared with the production sector, has a tendency to value profitability rather than creation itself. Therefore, a cultural industry with the strong distribution sector tends to form the industrial system emphasizing profitability. The Japanese animation firm is apt to choose its location from the perspective of efficiency, which easily contributes to profitability, because television broadcasting stations are strong distribution sector. Conversely, the Japanese game firm chooses its location from the perspective of creativity due to the absence of strong distribution sector.

  • Purpose - This study investigates whether financial analysts consider the intangible investment implicit in selling, general, and administrative (SG&A) expenditures to forecast firms' future earnings. Research design, data, and methodology - Using 52,609 U.S. firm-year observations spanning 1984-2016, this study examines the association between the Intangible investment implicit in SG&A expenditures and properties of analysts' earnings forecasts. To estimate the Intangible investment of SG&A, I decompose SG&A excluding R&D and advertising expenditures into maintenance and investment components following Enache and Srivastava (2017). Results - The main results show that analysts' earnings forecast errors and dispersion in analysts' forecasts increase with the intangible investment derived from SG&A because the investment component of SG&A affects future earnings and the uncertainty of those earnings. However, these results are weakened in the wholesale and retail industries where firms have a higher level of investment component of SG&A. I attribute the weaker results to low R&D expenditures in those industries. Conclusion - This study indicates that financial analysts incorporate the intangible investment of SG&A into their earnings forecasts differently across firms and industries. Furthermore, this study supports the argument for the separate reporting of the investment nature of SG&A from other operating expenses such as maintenance nature of SG&A.

  • In various industries, especially manufacturing and chemical industries, it is often observed that the distribution of a specific process, initially having followed a normal distribution, becomes skewed as a result of unexpected causes. That is, a process deviates from a normal distribution and becomes a skewed distribution. The skew-normal (SN) distribution is one of the most employed models to characterize such processes. The shape of this distribution is determined by the asymmetry parameter. When this parameter is set to zero, the distribution is equal to the normal distribution. Moreover, when there is a shift in the asymmetry parameter, the mean and variance of a SN distribution shift accordingly. In this paper, we propose procedures for monitoring the asymmetry parameter, based on the statistic derived from the noncentral t-distribution. After applying the statistic to Shewhart and the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) charts, we evaluate the performance of the proposed procedures and compare it with previously studied procedures based on other skewness statistics.
