The Impact of Operating Cash Flows on Financial Stability of Commercial Banks: Evidence from Pakistan

  • This study aims to examine whether operating cash flows influence banks' financial stability in Pakistan. The study employed annual panel data collected from annual reports of 20 commercial banks listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange for the year 2011 to 2019. Free cash flow yield was taken as the dependent variable while cash flow ratio was selected as the independent variable, and net interest margin, income diversification, asset quality, financial leverage, the cost to income ratio, advance net of provisions to total assets ratio, capital ratio, financial performance, breakup value per share and bank size were taken as control variables. The study performed ordinary least square technique, random and fixed effects models, Hausman test, Lagrange multiplier test, descriptive and correlation analysis. Results showed that operating cash flows and net interest margin significantly and positively influenced banks' financial stability while the cost to income ratio and advances net of provisions to total assets ratio significantly and negatively associated with banks' financial stability. To improve financial stability, banks should become more cost-effective and enhance their liquidity levels by lowering lending activities. In the future, it would be useful to compare commercial and investment banks, also Islamic and conventional banks in the same research setting.

Microfinance and the Rural Poor: Evidence from Thai Village Funds

  • This research examines the financial performance of Village and Urban Community Funds (VFs). The study also explores the beneficial effects of the biggest microfinance programs in the world in the lower and lowest income provinces; specifically, whether VFs change household economic status or not. The data is collected uniquely from the village funds in four provinces of each region in Thailand which considerably reflect the government achievement. Accordingly, several financial ratios have been applied to evaluate the financial efficiency of the village funds, and the ordered logit model has been used to estimate the impact on economic variables of the poor. The findings show that the village funds do not improve the savings, income, consumption, and asset of VFs' members, although such funds have a higher financial performance. Furthermore, the VFs are a good substitute compared to the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) credit because the cross-price elasticity of quantity of demand for such loans is positive. In particular, the loans from village funds are insignificantly correlated with the debt, income, asset, and economic status of VF members. This implies that Thai Village Funds do not alleviate definitely the serious problem about the financial situation in rural provinces. Thus, this microfinance does not change the economic well-being of the poor.

방글라데시 해안지대 기후변화에 따른 영세 어업인 생계 위험 경감 방안 (Livelihood Risk Reduction for Artisanal Fisheries Communities due to Climate Change in Coastal Area of Bangladesh)

  • This study aimed to suggest an alternative income generation (AIG) for local artisanal fisheries communities in the southern coastal area of Bangladesh, which is vulnerable to climate change. To analyze the problems of local artisanal fisheries caused by climate change, field surveys and in-depth interviews with fishermen and government officials were conducted. Livelihood risk factor (LRF) in the marine fishing sector included reduction of fishing days and fish production and damage to fishing vessels and fishing gear due to cyclone and sea-level rise. LRF in the aquaculture sector included cultured fish escape, reduction of aquaculture production, and water pollution due to Monsoon flood. A common challenge for two sectors was high interest rate on commercial loans. Small-scale tank aquaculture is recommended as AIG for securing income of artisanal fisheries communities. In the early stages of dissemination of small-scale tank aquaculture technology, it is necessary to prevent fishermen from struggling to repay high-interest rate loans through technology transfer and facility support by official development assistance. The aquaculture training center, along with the technical education, will also contribute toward expansion of local distribution network and marketing support to establish a value chain for local artisanal fisheries communities.

  • Recently, online grocery shopping has been increasing with the development of internet, mobile, and IT technology due to the proportion of consumers changes like increasing single households and double-income couples. Therefore, online sales from distributors with offline stores have also increased, and the offline retailers are facing their limits in dealing with store-based online channel they have carried out. Domestic offline retailers benchmarked overseas advanced retailers to solve this problem by reviewing about developing the online-only distribution center. However, much investment is needed in order to operate the distribution center with the new concept from abroad. In this study, we have reviewed the current online grocery market trend and the theory related to developing distribution system of the online mall. For offline retailers, we have reviewed the case which developed the distribution center applied to the nation's first online-only distribution center. The purpose of this study is reducing trial and error for local retailers in developing online-only distribution centers and suggesting ways to improve investment effect.

Distribution Channel Preference Accessing 'Korean Wave' in China : Comparing Official and Unofficial Channel

  • Purpose - China has become the world's largest market of Korean culture goods. However the distribution and information channel from which Chinese consumers can access to Korean contents remains under-explored. This study aimed to investigate Chinese consumers' information accessing behavior. Research design, data, and methodology - We collected the sample of 800 customers who are exposed to Korean Wave in China. Regression analysis is used to confirm the relationships in the research model. Results - The results showed that official channels such as state owned sites still play a significant role, Chinese consumers prefer to use unofficial channels and the private SNS is the most popular one. It is also found that users with low interests in Korean contents prefer offline/indirect channels while people who are highly immersed into Korean culture and spend longer time on it tend to favor online/unofficial channels. The results confirms that there are some users' characteristics such as gender, age, income and experience of visiting Korea are relevant to explain their propensity to select distribution and information channels for Korean contents. Conclusions - The study enables managers to develop the more effective distribution channel strategies according to the different target consumer groups.

농촌가계의 재무관리행동과 주관적 소비수준 (Financial Management Behavior and Subjective Level of Consumption of Rural Households)

  • The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between financial management behavior and subjective level of consumption of rural households. In this study, financial management behavior was defined to include 'budgeting' and 'expenditure management'. Data were collected from the 215 rural households in 13 different provinces of Chungnam, and 203 households were used for the analysis. Frequency distribution, means, and path analysis were employed for the statistical analysis. Major findings were as follows. Budgeting behavior had a significant positive effect on rural households' subjective level of consumption, while expenditure management behavior didn't have any significant effect. This implies that active and systematic financial management behavior such as budgeting is more effective than relatively passive financial management behavior like expenditure management on the enhancement of economic well-being of rural households. Age, education, and number of non-farm earners had indirect effects on the subjective level of consumption through budgeting behavior. Income stability had a direct effect and income had both direct and indirect effects on the subjective level of consumption.

해운산업에 대한 정부지원의 타당성 검토 (The Appropriatness of Government Support of Shipping Industry ; A General Equilibrium Approach)

  • In this study the economic impacts of government support of shipping industry in the labor rich country are appraised in a general equilibrium model. Shipping industry subsidies (which are supposed to be supplied by lump-sum tax) will decrease disposable income by shifting productive resources from traded goods to the comparatively disadvantageous transport sector, and at the same time reduce the implicit tariff effect by lowering transport costs. The net effect of shipping industry subsidies is to increase social welfare because the latter positive effect of shipping industry subsidies is to increase social welfare because the latter positive effect dominates the former negative effect. Such an increase in social welfare can never be expected from competitive traded goods industry subsidies in the case of which social welfare will actually decrease because of inefficient resource allocation resulting from the subsidies. In addition it is worth noting that the subsidies on the most capital intensive shipping industry will rectify unevenness in income distribution by raising relative price of labor contrary to subsidies on capital intensive traded goods.

여성농업인 노동의 경제적 가치평가 방법에 관한 소고 (A review of economic valuation methods for rural women′s labor)

  • Recently the rural women's role has been changed from assisting men to leading major farm work. However, contribution of women in the rural area has not beers fairly evaluated. Hence, it has been difficult for the rural women to receive the reasonable compensation if they injured, had some disasters or were divorced. Therefore this study tried to suggest economic methods such as market cost approach, opportunity cost method and shadow wage method for evaluating rural women's labor. It might provide some information for helping to establish the status of rural women as a income earner through estimating money value of labor contributed by rural women and furthermore, be useful information to improve the efficiency of farm labor by exploring the relationship between value of labor and actual income. Hence, it might help improve the economic situation and life at home of rural women, solve difficulties in the real life and reduce disparity of economic distribution between urban and rural area.

  • The purpose of this study were to investigate the socio-demographic variables influencing the communications and the adolescents' self concepts, and to define the correlation between the communications and the adolescents' self concepts. For this purposes, a survey was conducted using questionnaire. The data used in this study included 478 boys and girls in high school living in Kwangju. Statistics used of data analysis were Frequency Distribution, Percentile, Mean, Standard Deviation, F-test, Scheffe-Test, Pearson's Correlation, and Step-wise Multiple Regression. The main results were as follows; 1) The communication between fathers and their adolescents children differed significantly by education level , occupation, and income of their fathers. 2) the self concept differed significantly by sex of children, educational level, occupation, and income of their fathers. 3) The correlation between self concept and communication among fathers and their adolescents children marked positive correlation except Self-Criticism. 4) The mose influencial variables on communication between faters and their adolescents children were the Family Self Score.

  • As we continue to enjoy economic growth, there is an abundance of disposable income for consumer to spend. Consumers are spending more and more of these income in beauty service. However, relatively little is known about which factors influence consumer' behavior intentions in this area. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between the servicescape and relational benefits on customer value in beauty salon area. The Results are summarized as follows First, as the results of data analysis, among the composition factor of servicescape, spatiality, comfortableness, cleanness and convenience are shown to give positive effect on customer value. Second, among the composition factor of relational benefits, economic honest, functional benefit, private benefit, social benefit and psychological benefit are found to have a positive relationship with customer value.
