  • A research to evaluate efficiency of design optimization was performed for aerodynamic design optimization problem in distributed computing environment. The aerodynamic analyses which take most of computational work during design optimization were divided into several jobs and allocated to associated PC clients through network. This is not a parallel process based on domain decomposition rather than a simultaneous distributed-analyses process using network-distributed computers. GBOM(gradient-based optimization method), SAO(Sequential Approximate Optimization) and RSM(Response Surface Method) were implemented to perform design optimization of transonic airfoil and to evaluate their efficiencies. One dimensional minimization followed by direction search involved in the GBOM was found an obstacle against improving efficiency of the design process in distributed computing environment. The SAO was found quite suitable for the distributed computing environment even it has a handicap of local search. The RSM is apparently the fittest for distributed computing environment, but additional trial and error works needed to enhance the reliability of the approximation model are annoying and time-consuming so that they often impair the automatic capability of design optimization and also deteriorate efficiency from the practical point of view.

  • Litter decomposition is an important process in terrestrial ecosystem. However, studies on decomposition are rare, especially in evergreen broadleaf trees. We collected the leaf litter of five evergreen broadleaf trees (Daphniphyllum macropodum, Dendropanax morbifera, Castanopsis cuspidata var. thunbergii, Machilus thunbergii and Quercus acuta), and carried out a decomposition experiment using the litterbag method in Ju-do, Wando-gun, Korea for 731 days from December 25, 2011 to December 25, 2013. Among the five experimental tree species, C. cuspidata var. thunbergii distribution was limited in Jeju Island, and D. macropodum was distributed at the highest latitude at Mt. Baekyang (N 35°40′). About 2% of the initial litter mass of D. macropodum and D. morbifera remained, while 20.9% remained for C. cuspidata var. thunbergii, 30.4% for M. thunbergii, and 31.6% for Q. acuta. D. macropodum litter decayed four times faster (k = 2.02 yr-1) than the litter of Q. acuta (k = 0.58 yr-1). The decomposition of litter was positively influenced by thermal climate such as accumulated mean daily air temperature (year day index) and precipitation, as well as by physical characteristics such as thickness (R2=0.939, P = 0.007) and specific leaf area (SLA) (R2 = 0.964, P = 0.003). The characteristics of chemical composition such as lignin (R2 = 0.939, P = 0.007) and water-soluble materials (R2 = 0.898, P = 0.014) showed significant correlations with litter decomposition. However, the nutrients in litter showed complicated species-specific trends. The litter of D. macropodum and D. morbifera had fast decomposition despite their low nitrogen concentration and high C/N ratio. This means that the litter decomposition was more strongly affected by physical characteristics than chemical composition and nutrient content. On the other hand, the litter of Q. acuta which had the slowest decay rate had a high amount of N and low C/N ratio. Thus, the decomposition of Q. acuta litter was more affected by the P content of the litter than the N content, although all litter had similar physical characteristics.

  • On-line monitoring system is important for high voltage vacuum circuit breakers (HVCBs) in operation condition assessment and fault diagnosis. A distributed multilayer system with client/server architecture is developed on rated voltage 10kV HVCB with spring operating mechanism. It can collect data when HVCB switches, calculate the necessary parameters, show the operation conditions and provide abundant information for fault diagnosis. Ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) is used to detect the singular point which is regarded as the contact moment. This method has been applied to on-line monitoring system successfully and its satisfactory effect has been proved through experiments. SVM and FCM are both effective methods for fault diagnosis. A combinative algorithm is designed to judge the faults of HVCB's operating mechanism. The system's precision and stability are confirmed by field tests.

  • Based on the requirements and characteristics of multi-zone autonomous decision-making in modern power system, fully distributed computing methods are needed to optimize the economic dispatch (ED) problem coordination of multi-regional power system on the basis of constructing decomposition and interaction mechanism. In this paper, four fully distributed methods based on alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) are used for solving the ED problem in distributed manner. By duplicating variables, the 2-block classical ADMM can be directly used to solve ED problem fully distributed. The second method is employing ADMM to solve the dual problem of ED in fully distributed manner. N-block methods based on ADMM including Alternating Direction Method with Gaussian back substitution (ADM_G) and Exchange ADMM (E_ADMM) are employed also. These two methods all can solve ED problem in distributed manner. However, the former one cannot be carried out in parallel. In this paper, four fully distributed methods solve the ED problem in distributed collaborative manner. And we also discussed the difference of four algorithms from the aspects of algorithm convergence, calculation speed and parameter change. Some simulation results are reported to test the performance of these distributed algorithms in serial and parallel.

  • We present an approach to parallelizing optimal power flow that is suitable for distributed implementation and is applicable to very large interconnected power systems. This approach can be used by utilities to optimize economy interchange without disclosing details of their operating costs to competitors. Recently, it is becoming necessary to incorporate contingency constraints into the formulation, and more rapid updates of telemetered data and faster solution time are becoming important to better track changes in the system. This concern led to a research to develop an efficient algorithm for a distributed optimal power flow based on the Auxiliary Problem Principle and to study the convergence rate improvement of the distributed algorithm. The objective of this paper is to find a set of control parameters with which the Auxiliary Problem Principle (Algorithm - APP) can be best implemented in solving optimal power flow problems. We employed several IEEE Reliability Test Systems, and Korea Power System to demonstrate the alternative parameter sets.

  • EMD is a fully data-driven signal processing method without using any predetermined basis function and requiring any user parameters setting. However EMD experiences a problem of mode mixing which interferes with decomposing the signal into similar oscillations within a mode. To overcome the problem, EEMD method was introduced. The algorithm performs the EMD method over an ensemble of the signal added independent identically distributed white noise of the same standard deviation. Even so EEMD created problems when the decomposition is complete. The ensemble of different signal with added noise may produce different number of modes and the reconstructed signal includes residual noise. This paper propose an modified EEMD method to overcome mode mixing of EMD, to provide an exact reconstruction of the original signal, and to separate modes with lower cost than EEMD's. The experimental results show that the proposed method provides a better separation of the modes with less number of sifting iterations, costs 20.87% for a complete decomposition of the signal and demonstrates superior performance in the signal reconstruction, compared with EEMD.

  • The photocatalysts of Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ compositeswere prepared by the sol-gel method and characterized by BET, XRD, SEM, and EDX. It showed that the BET surface area was related to adsorption capacity for each composite. The SEM results showed that ferric compound and titanium dioxide were distributed on the surfaces of ACF. The XRD results showed that Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composite only contained an anatase structure with a Fe mediated compound. EDX results showed the presence of C, O, and Ti with Fe peaks in Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites. From the photocataytic degradation effect, $TiO_2$ on activated carbon fiber surface modified with Fe (Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$) could work in the photo-Fenton process. It was revealed that the photo-Fenton reaction gives considerable photocatalytic ability for the decomposition of methylene blue (MB) compared to non-treated ACF/$TiO_2$, and the photo-Fenton reaction was improved by the addition of $H_2O_2$. It was proved that the decomposition of MB under UV (365 nm) irradiation in the presence of $H_2O_2$ predominantly accelerated the oxidation of $Fe^{2+}$ to $Fe^{3+}$ and produced a high concentration of OH radicals.

  • A finite element code for the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is parallelized by vertex-oriented domain decomposition. To accelerate the convergence of iterative solvers like conjugate gradient method, parallel block ILU, iterative block ILU, and distributed ILU methods are tested as parallel preconditioners. The effectiveness of the algorithms has been investigated when P1P1 finite element discretization is used for the parallel solution of the Navier-Stokes equation. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional Laplace equations are calculated to estimate the speedup of the preconditioners. Calculation domain is partitioned by one- and multi-dimensional partitioning methods in structured grid and by METIS library in unstructured grid. For the domain-decomposed parallel computation of the Navier-Stokes equation, we have solved three-dimensional lid-driven cavity and natural convection problems in a cube as benchmark problems using a parallelized fractional 4-step finite element method. The speedup for each parallel preconditioning method is to be compared using upto 64 processors.

  • In order to design a compact urea selective catalytic reduction system, numerical simulation was conducted by computational fluid dynamics tool. A swirl type static mixer and a mixing chamber were considered as mixing units in the system. It had great influence on flow characteristics and urea decomposition into ammonia. The mixer caused flow recirculation and high level of turbulence intensity, and the chamber increased residence time of urea-water-solution injected. Because of those effects, reaction rates of urea decomposition were enhanced in the region. When those mixing units were combined, it showed the maximum because the recirculation zone was significantly developed. $NH_3$ conversion was maximized in the zone due to widely distributed turbulence intensity and high value of uniformity index. It caused improvement of $NO_x$ reduction efficiency of the system. It was possible to reduce 55% length of the chamber and connecting pipe without decrease of $NO_x$ reduction efficiency.
