In the distributed video coding (DVC) system, the difference between the side information and the original Wyner-Ziv frame is corrected using channel codes and the additional parity bits are requested through feedback channel if the error is not corrected. The efficient bit rate control is important to use the DVC system in the band-limited channel, such as mobile communication environments. In this paper, the constant bit rate control method in the encoder of the DVC system is proposed. The coding performance as well as the bit rate is efficiently controlled by the proposed method.

In the distributed video coding system, the parity bits, which are generated in encoders, are used to reconstruct Wyner-Ziv frames. Since the original Wyner-Ziv frames are not known in decoders, the efficient correlation noise modeling for turbo or LDPC code is necessary. In this paper, an efficient correlation noise modeling method is proposed and the performance is analyzed. The method to estimate the quantization parameters for key frames, which are encoded using H.264 intraframe coding technique, is also proposed. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated by extensive computer simulations.

Recently, as one of low complexity video encoding methods, DVC (Distributed Video Coding) scheme has been actively studied. Most of DVC schemes exploit feedback channel to achieve better coding performances, however, this causes these schemes to have high decoding delay. In order to overcome these, this paper proposes a new fast DVC decoding method using parity-bit request model, which can be obtained by using bit-error rate, sent by encoder with motion vector, which is transmitted through feedback channel by decoder after generating side information. Through several simulations, it is shown that the proposed method improves greatly the decoding speed, compared to the conventional schemes.
Intra mode decision is a useful coding tool in Distributed Video Coding (DVC) for improving DVC coding efficiency for video sequences having fast motion. A major limitation associated with the existing intra mode decision methods, however, is that its efficiency highly depends on user-specified thresholds or modeling parameters. This paper proposes an entropy-based method to address this problem. The probabilities of intra and Wyner?Ziv (WZ) modes are determined firstly by examining correlation of pixels in spatial and temporal directions. Based on these probabilities, entropy of the intra and the WZ modes are computed. A comparison based on the entropy values decides a coding mode between intra coding and WZ coding without relying on any user-specified thresholds or modeling parameters. Experimental results show its superior rate-distortion performance of improvements of PSNR up to 2 dB against a conventional Wyner?Ziv coding without intra mode decision. Furthermore, since the proposed method does not require any thresholds or modeling parameters from users, it is very attractive for real life applications.

Recently, distributed video coding (DVC) has been actively studied for low complexity video encoder. The complexity of the encoder in DVC is much simpler than that of traditional video coding schemes such as H.264/AVC, but the complexity of the decoder in DVC increases. In this paper, we propose the Region-Of-Interest (ROI) based DVC with low decoding complexity. The proposed scheme uses the ROI, the region the motion of objects is quickly moving as the input of the Wyner-Ziv (WZ) encoder instead of the whole WZ frame. In this case, the complexity of encoder and decoder is reduced, and the bite rate decreases. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme obtain 0.95 dB as the maximum PSNR gain in Hall Monitor sequence and 1.87 dB in Salesman sequence. Moreover, the complexity of encoder and decoder in the proposed scheme is significantly reduced by 73.7% and 63.3% over the traditional DVC scheme, respectively. In addition, we employ the layered belief propagation (LBP) algorithm whose decoding convergence speed is 1.73 times faster than belief propagation algorithm as the Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) decoder for low decoding complexity.

Low density parity check (LDPC) code is widely used, since it shows superior performance close to Shannon limit and its decoding complexity is lower than turbo code. Recently, it is used as a channel code to decode Wyner-Ziv frames in distributed video coding (DVC) system. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to design the parity check matrix H of LDPC codes. In order to apply LDPC code to DVC system, the LDPC code should have rate compatibility. Thus, we also propose a method to merge check nodes of LDPC code to attain the rate compatibility. LDPC code is designed using ACE algorithm and check nodes are merged for a given code rate to maximize the error correction capability. The performance of the designed LDPC code is analyzed extensively by computer simulations.

Distributed video coding (DVC) system has been proposed to reduce encoder complexity by using the correlation of frames in decoders. Since the block based motion estimation operation is not performed in the encoder of DVC system, lapped transforms, in which adjacent two blocks are transformed into one block, can be efficiently used in the DVC system. In this paper, an efficient DVC system using lapped transforms is proposed. The overlapped block motion compensated interpolation is used to produce side information, and the corresponding correlation noise between original Wyner-Ziv frame and side information is modeled. Extensive computer simulations show that the proposed DVC system outperforms conventional DVC systems.
Because of the system delay caused by the number of feedback retransmission in Distributed Video Coding (DVC) scheme, it is difficult to realize practical DVC in many cases. In this paper low feedback retransmission Distributed Source Coding (DSC) scheme is proposed for practical DVC scheme based on Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes because DVC system is an specific application of DSC system. This DSC scheme is achieved by using different LDPC codes optimized in each different compression rate and using source revealing scheme. Optimized LDPC codes provide us much better decoding performance which causes the 57% reduced number of iteration. Consequently, the number of feedback retransmission is decreased by 50%.

Recently, DVC (Distributed Video Coding) techniques are drawing a lot of interests as one of the future research works to achieve low complexity encoding in various applications. But, due to the limited computational complexity, the performances of DVC algorithms are inferior to those of conventional international standard video coders, which use zig-zag scan, run length code, entropy code and skipped macroblock. In this paper, in order to overcome the performance limit of the DVC system, the distortion for every block is estimated when side information is found at the decoder and then we propose a new selective block encoding scheme which provides the encoder side with the motion information for the highly distorted blocks and then allows the sender to encode the motion compensated frame difference signal. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the coding efficiency of the proposed scheme reaches almost that of the conventional inter-frame coding scheme.

Distributed video coding (DVC) is a new coding paradigm that enables to exploit the statistics among sources only in decoder and to achieve extremely low complex video encoding without any loss of coding efficiency. Wyner-Ziv coding, a particular implementation of DVC, reconstructs video by correcting noise on side information using channel code. Since a good quality of side information brings less noise to be removed by the channel code, generation of good side information is very important for the overall coding efficiency. However, if there are complex motions among frames, it is very hard to generate a good quality of side information without any information of original frame. In this paper, we propose a method to enhance the quality of the side information using small amount of additional information of original frame in the form of hash. By decoder's informing encoder where the hash has to be transmitted, side information can be improved enormously with only small amount of hash data. Therefore, the proposed method gains considerable coding efficiency. Results of our experiment have verified average PSNR gain up to 1 dB, when compared to the well-known DVC codec, known as DISCOVER codec.
