Wireless sensor network technology is a rapidly growing technology of ubiquitous computing environment and application and research are being carried out in various fields. The sensor nodes constituting the wireless sensor network maintain the life cycle by using the battery in the distributed network environment, so energy efficiency is more important than QoS requirement. In MAC protocol of IEEE802.15.4, MAC protocol study adaptive to traffic and standardization work emphasizing reliability and efficiency in wireless sensor network environment are underway. but, Wireless sensor networks have the problem that the response speed of the sensor node drops as the energy efficiency decreases. In this paper, we designed the MAC protocol with improved energy efficiency of the whole network by analyzing the MAC protocol of the synchronous method and the hybrid method.
The WiMedia Alliance has specified a Distributed Medium Access Control (D-MAC) protocol based on UWB for high speed wireless home networks and WPANs. The WiMedia D-MAC fundamentally removes the problems of the centralized MAC revealed at IEEE 802.15.3 MAC, by adopting a distributed architecture. However, there is no completely distributed method for allocating fair data rates to all traffic streams by considering each stream's QoS parameter. In this paper, a novel fair distributed QoS admission control method is proposed. The proposed method is a fair, adaptive QoS provisioning method, by allocating time slots to devices according to the current traffic load condition, through executing only a proposed single satisfaction of QoS (SoQ) algorithm at each device.

N-screen is a promising technology to improve support for multimedia multicasting, content sharing, content mobility, media scalability, and seamless mobility. In this paper, the WiMedia distributed-MAC (D-MAC) protocol is adopted for development of a seamless N-screen wireless service. Furthermore, to provide a multi-hop, one source multi-use N-screen service through point to point streaming in a seamless D-MAC protocol, a dynamic multi-frame transmission technology is proposed. In this technology, a dynamic time slot allocation scheme and a multi-hop resource reservation scheme are combined. In the proposed dynamic time slot allocation scheme, two thresholds, a hard threshold and a soft threshold, are included to satisfy the power consumption and delay requirements. A multi-frame DRP reservation scheme is proposed to minimize end-to-end delay during the multi-hop transmissions between N-screen devices. The proposed dynamic multi-frame transmission scheme enhances N-screen performance in terms of the multi-hop link establishment success rate and link establishment time compared to the conventional WiMedia D-MAC system.

This paper proposes a TDMA-based multichannel medium access control (MAC) protocol for QoS provisioning in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) that enables nodes to transmit their packets in distributed channels. The IEEE 802.11 standard supports multichannel operation at the physical (PHY) layer but its MAC protocol is designed only for a single channel. The single channel MAC protocol does not work well in multichannel environment because of the multichannel hidden terminal problem. Our proposed protocol enables nodes to utilize multiple channels by switching channels dynamically, thus increasing network throughput. Although each node of this protocol is equipped with only a single transceiver but it solves the multichannel hidden terminal problem using temporal synchronization. The proposed energy efficient multichannel MAC (EM-MAC) protocol takes the advantage of both multiple channels and TDMA, and achieves aggressive power savings by allowing nodes that are not involved in communications to go into power saving "sleep mode". We consider the problem of providing QoS guarantee to nodes as well as to maintain the most efficient use of scarce bandwidth resources. Our scheme improves network throughput and lifetime significantly, especially when the network is highly congested. The simulation results show that our proposed scheme successfully exploits multiple channels and significantly improves network performance by providing QoS guarantee in MANETs.
This paper focuses on contention-based medium access control (MAC) protocols used in wireless local area networks. We propose a novel MAC protocol called adaptive backoff tuning MAC (ABTMAC) based on IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). In our proposed MAC protocol, we utilize a fixed transmission attempt rate and each node dynamically adjusts its backoff window size considering the current network status. We determined the appropriate transmission attempt rate for both cases where the request-to-send/clear-to-send mechanism was and was not employed. Robustness against performance degradation caused by the difference between desired and actual values of the attempt rate parameter is considered when setting it. The performance of the protocol is evaluated analytically and through simulations. These results indicate that a wireless network utilizing ABTMAC performs better than one using IEEE 802.11 DCF.
There are two kinds of network architectures in the IEEE 802.11:[1] distributed (ad-hoc) or centralized (infrastructure) wireless network. Centralized networks have an access point (base station) that can control the wireless medium access of stations in these networks. The 802.11 MAC protocol of an access point is the same as those of other stations in the contention period. This paper propose a novel MAC protocol of an access point to solve these problems. This MAC protocol adds a new contention-free period called EPCF (Extended PCF) to resolve accumulated data in the queue of an access point. Simulation results show that the new protocol performs better throughput than the 802.11 standard MAC with the less queue memory site requirement.

In network-centric warfare, the communication network has played a significant role in defeating an enemy. Especially, the urgent and important data should be preferentially delivered in time. Thus, we proposed a priority MAC protocol based on CSMA/CA with Binary Exponential Back-off for tactical wireless networks. This MAC protocol suggested a PCW(Prioritized Contention Window) with differentiated back-off time by priority and a RBR(Repetitive Back-off Reset) to reset the remaining back-off time. The results showed that this proposed MAC has higher performance than those of DCF(Distributed Coordination Function) in the transmission success rate and the number of control packet transmission by reducing the packet collision. Thus, it produced more effective power consumption. In comparison with DCF, this proposed protocol is more suitable in high-traffic network.

Because of MANET's dynamic characteristic, the hidden node problem can happen. Thus it must use with distributed channel access. In Ad hoc networks, carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance(CSMA/CA) is one of the most widely used medium access control(MAC) schemes for asynchronous data traffics. However, CSMA/CA could not guarantee the quality of multimedia traffics. CSMA is a contention based protocol. Therefor once a node gets a channel, it can momopolze. Thus the fairness problem with channel starvation will happen. We will propose a new MAC protocol to guarantee QoS for multimedia data in ad hoc networks.

In this paper, WiMedia Distributed-MAC protocol is adopted for development of multi-hop N-screen wireless services. Furthermore, to provide the multi-hop OSMU (One Source Multi Use) N-screen service through P2P streaming in the D-MAC protocol, a new multi-hop resource reservation scheme is proposed and analyzed to reduce end to end delay. For this Multi-hop resource reservation scheme, a new MSCDRP (Multi-Stage Cooperative DRP) IE is proposed. Simulation results show that our multi-hop MSCDRP scheme reduces the end to end delay and increases throughput at various multi-hop N-screen network environment.

This paper presents the analysis and the implementation of the asynchronous communication portion of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol. We have used PRISM2 chipsets from INTERSIL to build baseband, IF, and RF parts and PCI controller from PLX to interface LLC Layer. We have implemented DCF(Distributed Coordination Function) service using CSMA/CA(Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Acoidance) with backoff algorithm and RTS/CTS protocol. Also, we have implemented TSF(Timing Synchronization Function) which can be used for power management frequency hop synchronization, and other management function. This study can be used as a reference for the MAC protocol implementation and MAC controller design in very high speed wireless LAN which complies with the IEEE 802.11 standard.
