This paper presents an algorithm for removing high-density impulsive noise that generates some serious distortions in edge regions of an image. Although many works have been presented to reduce edge distortions, these existing methods cannot sufficiently restore distorted edges in images with large amounts of impulsive noise. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a method using connected lines extracted from a binarized image, which segments an image into uniform and edge regions. For uniform regions, the existing simple adaptive median filter is applied to remove impulsive noise, and, for edge regions, a prediction filter and a line-weighted median filter using the connected lines are proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed method provides much better performance in restoring distorted edges than existing methods provide. When noise content is more than 20 percent, existing algorithms result in severe edge distortions, while the proposed algorithm can reconstruct edge regions similar to those of the original image.
In this paper, the effect of nonlinear distortion, caused by a high-power amplifier (HPA) in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, on the receiver part is analyzed. Since the HPA, which can be modeled by a memoryless Volterra system, distorts OFDM signals in a nonlinear fashion, the received signal at each subchannel includes the multiplicative distortion of 1-st order as well as additive nonlinear distortion of higher-order. The nonlinear distortion can be viewed as a nonlinear interchannel interference (NICI) since it consists of harmonic distortions and intermodulation distortions, produced by other subchannels affecting the subchannel of interest. In this paper, were analytically derive the variance of NICI in terms of average input power using the Volterra model for HPA, and then calculate the bit-error rate (BER) performance of an OFDM system. Also, we propose a simple method to compensate for the phase distortion in OFDM system amplified by HPA, and calculate its BER performance. Validity of the proposed approach is verified by computer simulations for an OFDM system employing 16-QAM constellation input.
The relation between the welding conditions and welding distortions were studied with the weld parameters, current, welding speed and plate thickness, and the form of the distortions were derived theoretically. To derive these formulas, the temperature distribution on the plane normal to the direction of the weld line was assumed to be parabolic. Both the theoretical studies for the transverse shrinkage and angular distoction were compared with the experiments. The experiments were performed on the fundamental cases of a bead welds on rectangular mild steel plates. It was found that the distoction formulas were in good agreement with the results of the experiments. The formulas for the calculation of the distortion were established for the case of bead on plate weld using rectangular mild steel plate and the KS E4313, $4mm\phi$ welding rod.
The welding distortions, transverse shrinkage and angular change, on the butt welded joint made by the process of shielded metal arc welding, were studied on the basic study of bead on plate weld. On the study of bead on plate weld, the temperature distribution on the plane normal to the direction of the weld line was assumed to be parabolic. The form of the distortion formulas of welded joint for transverse shrinkage and angular change were derived theoretically. Also, the experiments were performed about three cases, for changing type, sizes of welding electrodes and types of grooves, welding on mild steel plate, to compare theoretical study and experiments. It was found that the theoretical study was in good agreement with the result of experiment. Also, the optimal welding conditions for reducing weld distortions were suggested.
We investigate the direct determination of expansion history using redshift distortions without plugging into detailed cosmological parameters. The observed spectra in redshift space include a mixture of information: fluctuations of density-density and velocity-velocity spectra, and distance measures of perpendicular and parallel components to the line of sight. Unfortunately it is hard to measure all the components simultaneously without any specific prior assumption. The degeneracy breaking, between the effect of cosmic distances and redshift distortions for example, depends on the prior we assume. An alternative approach is to utilize the cosmological principle inscribed in the heart of the Friedmann-Lematre-Robertson-Walker (hereafter FLRW) universe, that is, the specific relation between the angular diameter distance and the Hubble parameter, in this degeneracy breaking.

This paper deals with an application of Teager Energy Operator (TEO) and Energy Separation Algorithm(ESA) to detect and determine various voltage waveform distortions like harmonics, inter-harmonics and frequency variation. Because the TEO and DESA algorithm was initially proposed for speech or communication analysis, its applications are limited to some types of waveform in the power quality analysis area. For example, an undistorted voltage signal is similar with a pure sinusoid. A voltage fluctuation is very similar with an amplitude-modulated signal, from the viewpoint of signal theory. And a continuous frequency variation is similar with a frequency-modulated signal, which is also known as a chirp signal. This paper is written to show that the TEO and DESA algorithm can be used for detecting occurrences of the representative waveform distortions and determining their instantaneous information of amplitude and frequency.
A high power amplifier(HPA) has widely been used in wireless communications. In order to have a maximum power efficiency, the HPA uses a saturation domain having nonlinear characteristics, which generates nonlinear distortions to decrease the transmission efficiency. In order to solve this problem, various methods to linearize HPA have been reported until now, and the pre-distorter method is very attractive among them. In this paper, a new enhanced adaptive pre-distorter method was proposed to be applied for compensating nonlinear distortions of HPA. Through computer simulations as well as the analytical analysis, it could be shown that it is possible for both conventional adaptive pre-distorter and proposed adaptive pre-distorter, to be applied for linearizing HPA. Also, the simulations results demonstrated that the proposed adaptive pre-distorter may have faster convergence speed and better capability of compensating the nonlinear distortion than the conventional adaptive pre-distorter with nearly equal computation complexity.
Because hyperspectral imaging provides detailed spectral information across a broad range of wavelengths, it can be utilized in numerous applications, including environmental monitoring, food quality inspection, medical diagnosis, material identification, art authentication, and crime scene analysis. However, hyperspectral images often contain various types of distortions due to the environmental conditions during image acquisition, which necessitates the proper removal of these distortions through a data preprocessing process. In this study, a preprocessing method was investigated to effectively correct the distortion caused by artificial light sources used in indoor hyperspectral imaging. For this purpose, a halogen-tungsten artificial light source was installed indoors, and hyperspectral images were acquired. The acquired images were then corrected for distortion using a preprocessing that does not require complex auxiliary equipment. After the corrections were made, the results were analyzed. According to the analysis, a statistical transformation technique using mean and standard deviation with reference to a reference signal was found to be the most effective in correcting distortions caused by artificial light sources.
This paper investigates the EEG waveform distortions caused by the transient responses of the various types of signal conditioning filters, which are generally introduced for the automated EEG analysis. This study explicitly simulates the filter responses to the typical EEG waveform models, and compares the distortions.
