HORIZON EXPANSION OF THERMAL-HYDRAULIC ACTIVITIES INTO HTGR SAFETY ANALYSIS INCLUDING GAS-TURBINE CYCLE AND HYDROGEN PLANT

  • We present three nuclear/hydrogen-related R&D activities being performed at KAIST: air-ingressed LOCA analysis code development, gas turbine analysis tool development, and hydrogen-production system analysis model development. The ICE numerical technique widely used for the safety analysis of water-reactors is successfully implemented into GAMMA, with which we solve the basic equations for continuity, momentum conservation, energy conservation of the gas mixture, and mass conservation of 6 species (He, N2, O2, CO, CO2, and H2O). GAMMA has been extensively validated using data from 14 test facilities. We developed a tool to predict the characteristics of HTGR helium turbines based on the throughflow calculation with a Newton-Raphson method that overcomes the weakness of the conventional method based on the successive iteration scheme. It is found that the current method reaches stable and quick convergence even under the off-normal condition with the same degree of accuracy. The dynamic equations for the distillation column of HI process are described with 4 material components involved in the HI process: H2O, HI, I2, H2. For the HI process we improved the Neumann model based on the NRTL (Non-Random Two-Liquid) model. The improved Neumann model predicted a total pressure with 8.6% maximum relative deviation from the data and 2.5% mean relative deviation, and liquid-liquid-separation with 9.52% maximum relative deviation from the data.

Analysis of mercury and methylmercury in river sediment samples (하천퇴적물 중의 수은 및 메틸수은 분석 연구)

  • In this study, the use of purge & trap GC-MS technique for determination of methylmercury in sediment samples was described. The method detection limit of the method was determined as 0.06 ng/g and the recovery of the method was $102{\pm}11.4%$, with precisions better than 11.2%. The method was validated by analysis of CRMs such as ERM CC580 (estuarine sediment) and IAEA 405 (sediment). Additionally, the performance of the method was tested on river sediment samples and the analytical results were compared with those of the GC-CVAFS, which has been widely used for methylmercury analysis.

Volatile Compounds of Chonggugjang Prepared by Different Fermentation Methods and Soybean Cultivars (발효방법 및 대두품종을 달리한 청국장의 향기성분)

  • This study was attempted to develop technique of masking the pungent odor of chonggugjang using two-stage fermentation method with mixed pure cultures. Cooked soybeans were fermented with Lactobacilli or Aspergillus oryzae at $38^{\circ}C$ for 36 hrs, and then re-fermented with Bacillus subtilis for 12 hrs. The volatile compounds of chonggugjang were obtained with a SDE(Simultaneous steam Distillation and solvent Extraction) system and the extracts were identified by GC and GC-MS. The experimental results revealed the presence of 35 volatile compounds in control chonggugjang(only Bacillus subtilis inoculation). Among them, the major volatile compounds were 2,5-dimethyl pyrazine, 2,3,5-trimethyl pyrazine and 2-methyl pyrazine. Twenty-nine kinds of volatile compounds were in chonggugjang prepared by two-stage fermentation method with Lactobacilli and Bacillus subtilis(II), and major volatile compounds were identified to be 2,3,5-trimethyl pyrazine and 2,5-dimethyl Pyrazine. In chonggugjang(Asp. oryzae and then Bacillus subtilis inoculation(III)), the contents of hexadecanoic acid and 2-methyl pyrazine were patricularly high and the main components of chonggugjang fermented with rice straw(IV) were 2,5-dimethyl pyrazine, 2,3,5-trimethyl pyrazine etc. In conclusion, the flavor compounds such as 2, 5-dimethyl pyrazine, 2,3,5-trimethyl pyrazine and 2-methyl pyrazine were increased by the inoculation of Lactobacilli or Asp. oryzae, where as unpleasant odor components-butyric acid and valeric acid were decreased. Compared with volatile compounds of chonggugjang made from different soybean cultivars, the flavor compounds (2-methyl pyrazine 2,5-dimethyl pyrazine 2,6-dimethyl pyrazine 2,3-dimethyl pyrazine 2-acetyl pyrazine 2,3,5-trimethyl pyrazine 2-ethyl-3,5-dimethyl pyrazine) of chonggugiang prepared with Sinpaldalkong were high.

Ammonia Microdiffusion and Colorimetic Method for Determining Nitrogen in Plant Tissues (암모니아 확산 및 발생에 의한 식물조직의 질소분석 방법)

  • Ammonia microdiffusion method and colorimetric measurement are described for the nitrogen determination. The diffusion of ammonia could be successfully induced by using a microdiffusion cell. It is a simple and rapid technique, which is suitable for transforming the nitrogen in digests into $NH_4CI$ for the colorimetric N determination with ammonia color reagent. Above 99% of N recovery were obtained with microdiffusion up to 15 hours. The coloration method of collected $NH_4CI$ for the colorimetric N determination was also estabilshed with a scanning in U.V. spectrophotometer. Under the proposed coloration method (0.5 mL of sample digest, 4.0 mL of $H_2O$ and 0.5 mL of ammonia color reagent), a maximal absorbance was observed at 410 nm. The kinetic measurement of absorbance showed a high stability from 5 to 45 minutes after color development. Absorbance was directly proportional to the amount of $NH_4^+-N$ present. The microdiffusion-ammonia coloration method was successfully applied to the nitrogen determination in the forms of protein-N or total -N in plant tissue. Comparing with Kjeldahl distillation method, the values obtained with described method were slightly higher and more reliable.

Low-Temperature Microencapsulation of Sesame Oil Using Fluidized Bed Granulation (Fluidized bed granulation을 이용한 참기름의 저온 미세캡슐화)

  • Top spray-drying method is frequently utilized for flavor encapsulation, but the top spray-dried products frequently suffer from high losses of volatile flavor as the result of a high processing temperature (150-$300^{\circ}C$). In an effort to solve these problems, a low-temperature fluidized-bed granulating method was utilized to encapsulate the flavor. For the encapsulation of sesame oil, oil-in-water emulsions of sesame oil and a mixture of maltodextrin, modified starch, gum arabic, and gellan gum were bottom-sprayed at milder temperatures (70-$100^{\circ}C$) using a fluidized-bed granulator. Sesame oil extracts from microcapsules were obtained via a simultaneous distillation/extraction technique, and the retention of volatile flavor compounds was analyzed via a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The retention of volatile flavors of sesame oil per se, spray-dried and fluidized-bed granulated microcapsules after 3-day-storage at $37^{\circ}C$ were 0.8%, 37.2%, and 42.0%, respectively. In addition, the low-temperature fluidized-bed granulation showed higher encapsulation yield and sensory preferences for the application of commercial products (beef rice porridge), as compared to spray drying.

Diagnosis of the Liquid Transportation Pipe in the Petroleum Industry using Sealed Gamma-ray Source(137Cs) (밀봉감마선원(137Cs)을 이용한 석유화학산업의 유체이송배관 내 가동 중 이상 진단기술)

  • With the quantitative growth of the petroleum industry, the pipe facilities that connect each process increased significantly and the corresponding maintenance and repair costs of the pipe facilities increased as well. The diagnosis techniques to check a pipe efficiency while in operation are few in Korea, but in the advanced countries the pipe diagnosis using gramma-ray source was on-going research since 1960's. In this study, field experiments were performed to analyze the reasons for abnormal operation of the pipe connected to a distillation tower, and the degree of abnormality was estimated using a sealed gamma-ray source ($^{137}Cs$). Gamma radiation counts were measured by a detector (NaI) positioned outside the pipe-wall diametrically opposite to the gamma source. The results showed that a gas zone section's distribution pattern was different from the pattern of nearby fluid in a pipe. Th diagnosis technique using a gamma radiation source was proved to be an effective and reliable method, offering the information on the fluid distribution in pipe.

  • Many studies on pervaporation (PV) for the separation of dilute alcohols as an alternative to conventional energy-intensive technique of distillation have been conducted earlier. The pervaporation transition behavior of ethanol-water mixtures through the PDMS/PSF membrane is important, in order to understand the mechanism of diffusion process. Therefore, in the present work, transient PV behavior for 50 wt% EtOH/H2O mixture at 50℃ was investigated by using 1194 cm2 PDMS/PSF hollow fiber membrane modules. The overall total flux and the separation factor of all the membrane modules increased initially and then gradually decreased with respect to PV time. The initial increase can be attributed to fact that membrane fibers were dry and it took time to dissolve into the membrane surface, but the subsequent decrease is due to the depletion of ethanol concentration in the feed. Therefore, it was confirmed that the ethanol permeation through a PDMS membrane is governed by the solution-diffusion mechanism.
