  • The paper presents the details and results of an experimental study on bolted end-plate joints of industrial type steel building frames. The investigated joints are commonly used in Lindab-Astron industrial buildings and are optimized for manufacturing, erection and durability. The aim of the research was to provide an experimental background for the design model development by studying load-bearing capacity of joints, bolt force distribution, and end-plate deformations. Because of the special joint details, (i.e., joints with four bolts in one bolt-row and HammerHead arrangements), the Eurocode 3 standardized component model had to be improved and extended. The experimental programme included six different end-plate and bolt arrangements and covered sixteen specimens. The steel grade of test specimens was S355, the bolt diameter M20, whereas the bolt grade was 8.8 and 10.9 for the two series. The end-plate thickness varied between 12 mm and 24 mm. The specimens were investigated under pure bending conditions using a four-point-bending test arrangement. In all tests the typical displacements and the bolt force distribution were measured. The end-plate plastic deformations were measured after the tests by an automatic measuring device. The measured data were presented and evaluated by the moment-bolt-row force and moment-distance from centre of compression diagrams and by the deformed end-plate surfaces. From the results the typical failure modes and the joint behaviour were specified and presented. Furthermore the influence of the end-plate thickness and the pretension of the bolts on the behaviour of bolted joints were analysed.

  • The structural anisotropy and heterogeneity of rock mass, caused by discontinuities and weak zones, have a great influence on the deformation behavior of a tunnel. A tunnel construction in these complex ground conditions is very difficult. No matter how excellent a geological investigation is, local uncertainties of rock mass conditions still remain. Under these uncertain circumstances, an accurate forecast of the ground conditions ahead of the advancing tunnel face is indispensable to a safe and economic tunnel construction. This paper presents the effect of anisotropy and heterogeneity of the rock masses to be excavated by numerical analysis. The influences of distance from weak zone, the size or dimension, the different stiffness and the orientation of weak zones are analysed by 3-D finite element analysis. By analysing these numerical results, the tunnel behavior due to excavation can be well understood and the prediction of rock mass condition ahead of the tunnel face can be possible.

  • International Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO) adopted VOR(Very high frequency Omni-Range) as an international standard air navigation system in 1949 and recommended every country to make use of it in formulating air route and guiding take-off and landing of an aircraft. VOR is quite a useful navigation system so that more than 2,000 VORs have been installed all over the world including 39 in Korea: however, VOR signal could be easily affected by its circumstance like a mountainous area because it provides navigation information through AM and FM of VHF carrier. Therefore this study intends to investigate how much VOR performance is affected by its circumstances. For this purpose, the performance of the 10 VORs influenced by 24 obstacles are measured and analyzed by using an aircraft equipped with measuring instruments. This study may give us a feasible solution of problems related to the VOR siting in the future.

  • Deformations of bridge deck ends on abutments and piers bring about severe problems in track geometry and require maintenance work. In case of concrete slab track, more severe deformation and additional forces on rail and rail supports can be induced by bridge deck deformation, which affect the serviceability of track structure since concrete slab track is much stiffer than ballasted track and the behavior of track structure is integrated with that of bridge deck. In this study, the design variables affecting the serviceability of track structure are selected and the influence level is estimated by a parametric study. As a result, it is found that continuous span is advantageous than simply supported span and the stiffness of bridge bearing and rail fastener as well as the distance between last rail support and bridge bearing are most important parameters.

  • Skid resistance is an important factor that control braking distance and secure safety by preventing slipperiness between tire and pavement surface. Decrease of skid resistance at wet condition may cause fatal traffic accidents. Dirt materials such as sand and do-icings on the road surface also can be a factor for decrease skid resistance. This study makes an investigation into influence of skid resistance between varied cement concrete pavements about surface texturing method(transverse tining, longitudinal tining, exposed aggregate surface texturing method) and wearing condition of pavement surface texture(new constructed pavement's surface, wore pavement's surface) using accelerate concrete pavement wearing tester when remains of dirt material are obtained between tire and road surface on PCC pavement. As dirt material on road surface of concrete pavement, sand, calcium chloride and old oil were used with different amount of each cases.

  • The ocean tide loading (OTL) is an important factor for the GPS positioning, especially in the height direction. The shorter of the distance to the ocean, the larger of the error by the OTL. The influence will be changed when we measure in different place and the order of magnitude is from few centimeters to ten centimeters. In this study, more than ten kinds of the OTL models were collected and applied on the GPS static relative positioning in Taiwan. The GPS observations including five stations were obtained from Nov. 9, 2004 to Feb. 23, 2005 and we used the Bernese GPS software to execute the data processing. In this period, the average amplitudes of the 3-D coordinates are as follows: N is 0.4 cm, E is 0.7 cm, h is 1.8 cm at Kinmen station; N is 0.7 cm, E is 1.3 cm, h is 2.3 cm at Lanyu station; N is 0.5 cm, E is 0.7 cm, h is 2.0 cm at Matsu station; N is 0.6 cm, E is 0.6 cm, h is 2.0 cm at Penghu station and N is 0.5 cm, E is 1.2 cm, h is 1.7 cm at Hsinchu station. Moreover, we will analyze the advantage and disadvantage of every kind of the OTL models in different environments to offer some information to the GPS users and enhance the precision of the GPS positioning.

  • This paper attempts to investigate the influence of IMF economic crisis on family lives through questionnaire survey of 1001 women in Seoul. According to the results of the survey, we found the following changes that the economic crisis brought to the family lives. With the unemplyment, communication between husbands and wives became more dense in both positive and negative ways. While the possibility of violence and separation beteen husbands and wives was relatively low, violence against the children more directly reflects the economic difficulties . In the economic crisis, relatives are more important resouces for supports than friends and social welfare institutions . Especially the families of the wives are the most important supporters. Through the changes of consumption pattern in economic crisis. we confirmed that the expences for cultural activities, the hospitals and private education have some flexibility. That is, those expences firstly decreased in the economic crisis. Confronting the economic difficulties economic motivation of women to find works became stronger and we saw same possibility of changes of women\`s role pattern by undergoing economic difficulties.

  • A mobile CARS spectrometer is constructed to measure the instantaneous temperature of gases, of which software include the quick fit methods and a least square fitting method to obtain temperatures from the spectra. Two quick-fit-methods give smaller variance of temperatures than the least square fitting method even though they consume much shorter time to yield temperatures. The precision and accuracy of CARS temperature is measured in the graphite tube blackbody furnace in reference to a radiation pyrometer. The accuracy of the CARS temperature is $\pm$2% from 1000K to 2400K and the precision is $\pm$35K at 1600K with the most accurate quick-fit-method. As a demonstration of the instantaneous measurement, the spectrometer is applied for measurement of the turbulent combustion at a certain condition. eograms(HS) are made using a relatively small number of synthesized 2D images. The influence of aliasing artifacts caused by insufficient or improper sampling is presented, and a new sampling theory is proposed, which is used to making holographic stereograms. Also, the optical system for extension of viewing distance and viewing zone is proposed. Results of this analysis can be applied to design normal holographic stereograms and computer based holographic stereograms.

  • We research a system of compressed-sensing computational ghost imaging (CSCGI) based on the intensity fluctuation brought by turbulence. In this system, we used the gamma-gamma intensity-fluctuation model, which is commonly used in transmission systems, to simulate the CSCGI system. By setting proper values of the parameters such as transmission distance, refractive-index structure parameter, and sampling rates, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) performance and bit-error rate (BER) performance are obtained to evaluate the imaging quality, which provides a theoretical model to further research the ghost-imaging algorithm.

  • This paper discusses how to choose speech parameters and decision logics to improve the performance of speaker recognition systems. It also considers the influence of the reference patterns on the speaker recognition. It is observed from the performance analysis based on LPSs, PARCOR coefficients and LPC-cepstrum coefficients that LPC-cepstrum coefficients are superior to the others in speaker recognition without regard to the reference patterns. In order to improve the recognition performance, a new decision logic is proposed based on a generalized-distance concept. It differs from the existing methods in that it considers the statistics of customer and impostors at the same time. It turns out from a speaker verification test that the proposed decision logic ferforms better than the existing ones.
