This study was based on water quality data of the Lake Doam watershed, monitored from 2010 to 2013 at eight different sites with multiple physiochemical parameters. The dataset was divided into two sub-datasets, namely, non-rainy and rainy. Principal component analysis (PCA) and factor analysis (FA) techniques were applied to evaluate seasonal correlations of water quality parameters and extract the most significant parameters influencing stream water quality. The first five principal components identified by PCA techniques explained greater than 80% of the total variance for both datasets. PCA and FA results indicated that total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, total phosphorus, and dissolved inorganic phosphorus were the most significant parameters under the non-rainy condition. This indicates that organic and inorganic pollutants loads in the streams can be related to discharges from point sources (domestic discharges) and non-point sources (agriculture, forest) of pollution. During the rainy period, turbidity, suspended solids, nitrate nitrogen, and dissolved inorganic phosphorus were identified as the most significant parameters. Physical parameters, suspended solids, and turbidity, are related to soil erosion and runoff from the basin. Organic and inorganic pollutants during the rainy period can be linked to decayed matters, manure, and inorganic fertilizers used in farming. Thus, the results of this study suggest that principal component analysis techniques are useful for analysis and interpretation of data and identification of pollution factors, which are valuable for understanding seasonal variations in water quality for effective management.
The compressibility and the permeability of organic soil are so high that they cause many engineering problems when constructing a structure on the soil. If the organic content of the soil could be reduced by any applicable engineering technique, the engineering properties of the soils can be improved to some extent. The purpose of this study would thus be focused on how to decrease the amount of organic matters by applying aerobic biodegradation for eliminating post-construction settlement problems. To enhance the aerobic decomposition, oxygen was supplied to the soil samples prepared by the mixture of kaolinite and sawdust as organic matter. The dissolved oxygen and the organic content of the soil samples were measured, in accordance with the passage of time through the bests. As oxygen suppliers, HaOa liquid and pure oxygen gas were compared to meet the requirement of the test purposes. Newly manufactured oedometer with the diameter of 130 mm and the height of 300 mm was used for 100 days to perform the compressibility tests for the soils. Based on the results of this experiment, the oxygen gas-treated samples with nutrient settled 30% more than the samples untreated. This confirmed the efficiency of the aerobic biodegradation. $NaNO_3$ added into the soils as nutrients was proved more effective than $K_2HP0_4$. To confirm the activity of micro-organisms, sodium azide was also added to the soils.
Biologically treated water contains a large quantity of organic matters and microorganisms which can cause various problems to membrane. The membrane fouling occurred by these reasons is hard to control by single physical cleaning. This study analyzes the efficiency of aeration with chemical backwashing and foulants removal during chemical backwashing. The cleaning efficiency improves when the chemical concentration is high and the contact time of chemical is long. Chemical backwashing with aeration shows exceptional cleaning efficiency which leads the physical cleaning is required during chemical backwashing since it forms flow inside the membrane submerged tank. From the foulants removal analysis, the particles such as turbidity and TOC removal rate increase when the aeration is applied. Dissolved matter of DOC and UV254 removal is dependent on higher chemical concentration. According to FTIR analysis, one of major foulants, the polysaccharide is controlled by the chemical backwashing with aeration condition.

Dissolved and particulate organic carbon concentrations and fluxes were measured and estimated for the Yeongsan River during 2006~2015. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations ranged from 2.49 to $4.39mg{\cdot}C/L$ with a variance of 30.1% (${\sigma}_x/\bar{x}$), and showed a simple correlation to algal bloom and precipitation. The particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations had gradually decreased from 6.68 to $0.19mg{\cdot}C/L$ for 10 years, and changed definitely with weir construction in 2011. Based on the relationships between POC and suspended particulate matters and between POC and chlorophyll-a, we found out that the distinct variation of the origin and composition of POC was caused by stagnation and screening effect of the dammed river. The total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations dropped to 52.3% (from 8.26 to $3.94mg{\cdot}C/L$) as the POC concentrations diminished to more than 94.8% after weir construction, in which the DOC forms up to 90.9%. The fluxes of TOC, based on the relationship between the annual TOC concentration and the discharge of Yeongsan dike sluice, were $2.56{\sim}19.41{\times}10^9g{\cdot}C/yr$, and showed a great deal of variability in 2011. Since then the TOC flux dropped to $5.40{\times}10^9$ (2011~2015) from $14.54{\times}10^9g{\cdot}C/yr$ (2006~2010). These results suggest that the weirs trapped annually $1.83{\times}10^9g{\cdot}C$ on a river bed, but released in great levels of dissolved organic form at their exits.
The Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) existing in a water includes both hydrophobic and hydrophilic substances however, most of the discussion focuses on hydrophobic substances. The hydrophobic fraction was easily removed by absorption or coagulation more than hydrophilic fraction. Therefore, control of the hydrophilic fraction is very important in water treatment process. This study is to determine the variation of DOC, the removal efficiency of DOC, and Trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) after each stage of water treatment process by fractionating Natural Organic Matters (NOM) into hydrophobic and hydrophilic substance. DOC from raw water was fractionated at acidic pH (pH<2) using XAD 8 resin column, into two fraction : hydrophobic substance (i.e. humic substance) adsorbed on XAD 8 and hydrophilic substance which represent the organics contained in the final effluent. THMFP was carried out according to the following set condition: Cl2/DOC=4 mg/mg, incubation at $25^{\circ}C$ in darkness, pH 7 adjust with HCl or NaOH as necessary, and 72hour-contact time. THMs analyzed in this study were chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethan, and bromoform. Sewage was almost evenly split between the hydrophobic (56%) and hydrophilic fraction (44%). But, Aldrich humic substance (AHS) was found to contain less hydrophilics (14%) than hydrophobics (86%). The formation of THMs may depend on the source which is characterized by the composition of organic matters such as AHS and sewage. The THMFP yield of sewage and AHS were assessed as follows. The value of the THMFP reaction yield, AHS $172.65{\mu}g/mg$, is much higher than that of sewage $41.68{\mu}g/mg$. This illustrates possible significant difference in THMFP according to the component type and the proportion of organic matter existing in water source. Apparently AHS react with chlorine to produce more THMFP than do the smaller molecules found in sewage. Water treatment process may reduce THMFP, nevertheless residual DOC (the more hydrophilic substance) has significant THMFP. Further reduction in organic halide precursors requires application of alternative treatment techniques.
The objective of this study was to clarify the characteristics of the removed micropollutant since the breakthrough of adsorption ability was occurred in biological activated carbon(BAC) process. The removal efficiency of DOC (Dissolved Organic Carbon) was 36 % in the breakthrough of BAC occurred by NOM (Natural Organic Matter). The most of removal DOC was found out the adsorbable and biodegradable DOC (A&BDOC). But it was not clear to remove by any mechanism because A&BDOC have simultaneously the adsorption of activated carbon and biodegradation by microorganism in BAC. The removal of bromophenol was examined with BAC and rapid sand filter, for investigation of DOC removal mechanism in the breakthrough of BAC. In this experiment, BAC filter has been operated for 20 months for the treatment of reservoir water. The BAC filter was already exhausted by NOM. Bromophenol, adsorbable and refractory matter, was completely removed by BAC filter. Therefore, it might be removed by the adsorption in BAC. Adsorption isotherms of bromophenol were compared to two BACs which was preloaded with 500 daltons and 3,000 daltons of NOM. BAC preloaded with 3,000 daltons of NOM was not decreased to the adsorbability of bromophenol but BAC preloaded with 500 daltons of NOM was greatly decreased to it. These result indicated that NOM of low molecular weight can be removed by adsorption after a long period of operation and the breakthrough by NOM in BAC. Therefore, micropollutants might be removed through adsorption by saturated BAC.
In roastal fish farms the farmers, especialy engaging in dealing with the floating cage culture, going to know about relationships between holding capacity and water quality in cage. Some of water quality managers and specialists studing physiological ecology understand that the key of water quality management concerned fish farming is budget of dissolved oxygen. This paper deals with oxygen budget in floating cage of the yellow tail farms at southern coastal area in Korea. The sampling station is located at Konli-Do fish farm near Chungmu, and the data is collected for 24 hours from 3:00 p.m. 8th September 1987. In result, the needed oxygen coming after the consumption by the rearing fish had been supplied with the tide current exchange, the sum of oxygen produced by phytoplankton photosynthesis and diffused from atmosphere are no more that $43\%$ for the needs of sea water consumption included respiration of planktons and decomposition of organic matters. The optimum holding capacity of cage is possible to compute with the calculation of minimum diurnal water exchange rate $[Qin{\cdot}V^{-1}\;(C-\bar{c})]$ through net mesh of cage.
Development of shale gas has drawn increasing attention since it is one of promising alternative energy resources. However, contamination of groundwater and surface water during the extraction of shale gas is becoming a serious environmental issues, which brings the needs to treat wastewater generated from hydraulic fracking. In this study, the feasibility of membrane distillation (MD) for the treatment of shale gas wastewater was investigated using a laboratory scale experimental setup. Flat-sheet MD membranes were used to treat produced water from a shale gas well in the United States. Different configurations such as direct contact MD (DCMD) and air gap MD (AGMD) were compared in terms of flux and fouling propensity. The foulants on the surface of the membranes were examined. The results suggest that MD can treat the shale gas produced water containing more than 200,000 mg/L of total dissolved solids, which is impossible by other technologies such as reverse osmosis (RO) and forward osmosis (FO). In this study, we investigated the possibility of processing and characterization of shale gas produce wastewater using membrane distillation. Laboratory scale membrane distillation experimental device was developed. It was compared the flat-sheet direct contact membrane distillation and flat-sheet air gap membrane distillation. AGMD flux in lower than the flux of DCMD, it was expected that the contamination caused by organic matters.

We have examined the pollutant load of combined sewer in dry days. Two monitoring sites (C-1, C-2) were equipped with an flowmeter. Monitoring was conducted from September 2004 to April 2006 for 20 months during dry days. Flowrate and concentration of pollutants are lowest from 3 to 6 o'clock, and it is high at 9, 12 and 21 o'clock. Most of organic matters exist in the dissolved state. The results show that pollution loads in C-2 area were 4.5-7.2 times higher than in C-1. Pollutant loads were high on Saturdays. Pollutant loads (kg/ha/day) of C-2 were 1.1-3.1 times higher those of C-1. However there was no significant difference in winter. Analysis of correlation coefficient of water quality parameter indicates that besides of flowrate all items in C-1 site have tight relationship respectively (p<0.01). In C-2 site, correlation coefficient of TP-SS, TP-TN, TP-flowrate, BOD-flowrate, BOD-SS and TN-TP are statistically significant (p<0.01).
A flotation process has a shorter processing time and needs less space than a sedimentation process. Dissolved air flotation process (DAF) is an efficient flotation method and used in a conventional wastewater treatment process. However, DAF requires the circulation of water containing compressed air and requires expensive installation and operation cost. Plasma Air Flotation (PAF) process is able to float flocs by micro bubbles generated from underwater plasma without the circulation of bubbly water and additional saturators. Therefore, PAF can be an alternative solution overcoming economic barriers. In this study, Humic acid removal efficiency by PAF process was compared with that of sedimentation process. 44.67% and 87.3% reduction rate based on UV 254 absorbance has been measured in sedimentation and PAF respectively. In particular, PAF in the flocculation zone can dramatically remove humic acid from water. In flocculation zone, PAF can separate organic matters but sedimentation cannot.
