This paper describes development of management software for transformers based on artificial intelligent analysis technology of dissolved gases in oil. Fault interpretation using the artificial intelligent analysis is performed by the artificial neural network and a rule based on the analysis of dissolved gases. The used gases are acetylene($C_{2}H_{2}$), hydrogen($H_2$), ethylene($C_{2}H_{4}$), methane($CH_4$), ethane($C_{2}H_{6}$), carbon monoxide(CO) and carbon dioxide($CO_2$). This software is mainly composed of gases input, fault's causes, expected fault's phenomena in detail, the decision on maintenance as well as report and gas trend windows. It is indicated that this is very powerful software for the efficient management of oil-immersed transformers using data analysis of gas components.
Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is an effective solid/liquid separation process for low density floc particles such as algal, color-alum and clay-alum flocs produced from low turbidity water. The removal of taste and odor-causing organics (2-mthylisoboneol and geosmin) originating from algae in drinking water is a local and worldwide concern. Although DAF has been effectively applied for the removal of suspended solid, its application for the treatment of dissolved organic carbon is very limited. In this study, a new hybrid system consisting of adsorption and DAF processes was introduced for the simultaneous removal of algae and taste and odor-causing organics. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) was used as an adsorbent. In this proposed system, the major concern of eliminating the spent PAC from the system was also addressed. It was found that zeta potential of algae and PAC was increased with coagulant dosage, and the removal efficiency in DAF was also enhanced up to 90~95% under the given experimental conditions. Based on this study, the hybrid process was found to be a promising technology for the simultaneous removal of algae and dissolved organic pollutants.

The electrical and chemical characteristics in transformer insulations are changed due to thermal stress. In the chemical property, as the Kraft paper ages, the cellulose polymer chains breakdown into shorter lengths with a corresponding decrease in both tensile strength and degree of polymerization(DP). Furthermore, cellulous chains breakdown is accompanied by an increase in the content of various furanic compounds within the dielectric liquid. It is known that furanic components in transformer oil come only from the decomposition of insulating paper rather than from the oil itself. Therefore the analysis of furan products provides a complementary technique to dissolved gas analysis for monitoring transformers when we evaluate the aging of insulating paper by the total concentration of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide dissolved in oil only. In this paper the accelerated aging process of oil--paper samples have been investigated at a temperature up to $140^{\circ}C$ for 500 hours. The oil-paper insulation samples have been measured at intervals of 100 hours. For analysis we used high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) in accordance with IEC 61198 method.
This study investigated the fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a water reclamation facility (WRF) in Korea. The WRF consists of coagulation, sedimentation, microfiltration, and reverse osmosis (RO) components. The production capacity of WRF is 90,000 m3/day. The reclaimed water is reused as industrial water. We also characterized DOM in raw, processed, and finished waters based on analysis of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (UVA254), fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM), and DOC fractions via liquid chromatography-organic carbon detection (LC-OCD). Based on the results of DOC, UVA254, and FEEM analyses, neither the coagulation/sedimentation nor the microfiltration at the WRF effectively removed DOM. The RO process removed more than 94% of DOM. The raw water (i.e., secondary treated effluent obtained from a wastewater treatment plant) exhibited tryptophan-like peaks, which are a promising marker of wastewater, in the FEEM analysis. Coagulation and microfiltration failed to eliminate the wastewater marker, whereas RO completely removed it. The raw water also carried high levels (89.4%) of hydrophilic and low-molecular weight substances, which are difficult to remove via coagulation-sedimentation or microfiltration. Humic substance was a major component of the hydrophilic fractions. Based on the LC-OCD analysis, RO effectively removed the humic and polymeric materials from DOM.

Changes in spectroscopic characteristics and pyrene binding coefficients of terrestrial dissolved organic matters(DOM) were investigated during microbial incubation. The incubation studies were conducted for 21 days using a leaf litter DOM and a soilderived DOM with an inoculum from a river. The dissolved organic carbon(DOC), the specific UV absorbance(SUVA), the synchronous fluorescence spectra, and the pyrene organic carbon-normalized binding coefficient(K$_{oc}$) of the DOM were measured at the incubation days of 0, 3, 7, 14 and 21. After the 21-day incubation, DOC were reduced to 61% and 51% of the original concentrations of the litter DOM and the soil-derived DOM, respectively. Comparison of the spectroscopic characteristics before and after the incubation revealed that the SUVA, the fulvic-like fluorescence(FLF), the humic-like fluorescence(HLF) of the different DOM were enhanced by the incubation whereas the protein-like fluorescence(PLF) was reduced. This indicates that more aromatic and humic-like compounds were enriched during the biodegradation process while biodegradable and weak carbon structures were depleted. Irrespective of the DOM sources, SUVA values showed a positive relationship with pyrene K$_{oc}$ with a correlation coefficient of 0.97. The FLF and HLF also exhibited good correlations with K$_{oc}$ values although different regression equations were obtained from the different DOM. Our results suggest that the selected spectroscopic characteristics could be good estimation indices for the changes of the binding reactivity of DOM for hydrophobic organic contaminants during biodegradation process.

Two full-scale distribution systems, one treating water by ozonation and another treating water by nanofiltration in parallel with lime softening, were monitored for bacterial growth. Both systems kept disinfectant residuals surf as chlorine and chloramine in their respective distribution systems. Bacterial growth was assessed by heterotrophic plate counts (HPC) on R2A agar. In the distribution systems fed by ozonated water, HPCs were correlated ($R^2$= 0.97) using an exponential model with the assimilable organic carbon (AOC) at each sampling site. Also, it was observed that ozonation caused a significant increase in the AOC concentration of the distribution system (over 100% increase) as well as a significant increase in the bacterial counts of the distribution system (average increase over 100%). The HPCs from the distribution systems fed by nanofiltration in parallel with lime-softening water also displayed an exponential correlation ($R^2$ = 0.75) with an exponential model based on AOC. No significant correlation was found between bacteria growth on R2A agar and BDOC concentrations. Therefore, in agreement with previous work, bacterial growth in the distribution systems was found to correlate with AOC concentrations.
Soil organic carbon (SOC) retention has gradually gotten attention due to the need for mitigation of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and the simultaneous increase in crop productivity. We estimated the statistical maximum value of soil organic carbon (SOC) fixed by clay content using the Korean detailed soil map database. Clay content is a major factor determining SOC of subsoil because it influences the vertical mobility and adsorption capacity of dissolved organic matter. We selected 1,912 soil data of B and C horizons from 13 soil series, Sangju, Jigog, Jungdong, Bonryang, Anryong, Banho, Baegsan, Daegog, Yeongog, Bugog, Weongog, Gopyeong, and Bancheon, mainly distributed in Korean upland. The ranges of SOC and clay content were $0-40g\;kg^{-1}$ and 0 - 60%, respectively. Soils having more than 25% clay content had much lower SOC in subsoil than topsoil, probably due to low vertical mobility of dissolved organic carbon. The statistical analysis of SOC storage potential of upland subsoil, performed using 90%, 95%, and 99% maximum values in cumulative SOC frequency distribution in a range of clay content, revealed that these results could be applicable to soils with 1% - 25% of clay content. The 90% SOC maximum values, closest to the inflection point, at 5%, 10%, 15%, and 25% of clay contents were $7g\;kg^{-1}$, $10g\;kg^{-1}$, $12g\;kg^{-1}$, and $13g\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. We expect that the statistical analysis of SOC maximum values for different clay contents could contribute to quantifying the soil carbon sink capacity of Korean upland soils.

Nitrogen pollution in urban and rural groundwater is a common problem and poses a major threat to drinking water supplies based on groundwater. In this work, the kinetics of nitrification-denitrification coupled reactions are modeled and new reaction modules for the RT3D code describing the fate and transport of nitrogen species, dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic carbon, and biomass are developed and tested. The proposed nitrogen transformations and transport model showed very good match with the results of other public codes.

Black shale that has relatively high organic carbon content was tested to determine its sorption phenomena and capacity for TCE. Conventional batch sorption tests were peformed at room temperature. The parameters that were thought to affect the TCE sorption were solution pH and dissolved organic matter. The effect of solution pH on TCE sorption was minimal, but the dissolved organic matter increased the amount of TCE sorbed on black shale. Thus, using black shale as sorbent for TCE in groundwater could save material costs by replacing high cost conventional activated organic carbon.
The Primary Production of phytoplanktons produces organic matter in high concentration in eutrophicated Hakata Bay, Japan, even during the winter season in spite of low water temperature. Phytoplanktons are considered to have any biological capabilities to keep activities of photosynthesis under the unfavorable conditions, and this affects water quality of the bay. In this study, seasonal variations in primary production efficiency were predicted by using a simple box-type ecosystem model, which introduced the concept of efficiency for absorption of solar radiation energy in relation to growth of phytoplanktons under the low solar radiation intensity. According to the simulation result of primary production, it was organic pollution comes from dissolved organic carbon (DOC) throughout the year, DOC of which is originated from the primary production of phytoplanktons on biological response of the seasonal variation of ambient conditions.
