This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a flexibly mounted and rigid cylinder with two-degrees-of-freedom with respect to varying ratio of in-line natural frequency to cross-flow natural frequency, $f^*$, at a fixed low mass ratio. Combined in-line and cross-flow motion was observed in a sub-critical Reynolds number range. Three-dimensional displacement meter and tension meter were used to measure dynamic responses of the model. To validate the results and the experiment system, x and y response amplitudes and ratio of oscillation frequency to cross-flow natural frequency were compared with other experimental results. It has been found that the higher harmonics, such as third and more vibration components, can occur on a certain part of steel catenary riser under a condition of dual resonance mode. In the present work, however, due to the limitation of a size of circulating water channel, the whole test of a whole configuration of the riser at an adequate scale for VIV phenomenon was not able to be conducted. Instead, we have modeled a rigid cylinder and assumed that the cylinder is a part of steel catenary riser where the higher harmonic motions could occur. Through the experiment, we have found that even though the cylinder was assumed to be rigid, the occurrence of the higher harmonic motions was observed in a small reduced velocity ($V_r$) range, where the influence of the in-line response is relatively large. The transition of the vortex shedding mode from one to another was examined by using time history of x and y directional displacement over all experimental cases. We also observed the influence of in-line restoring force power spectral density with $f^*$.
The excavation works for deep foundation in urban areas have recently increased complaints of blasting vibration and settlement of ground level. Foundation must be excavated approximately up to 24-28m depths from the surface. The roads and subway line pass through the excavation area. The Dae-chung station is also located at the nearest distance 5-35m from the working site. To protect subway station and adjacient some structures from blasting and settlement, the level of ground vibration, displacements and stress were monitored and analyzed. The results can be summarized as follows ; 1. An empirical particle velocity equation were obtained by test blasts at Nassan Missi 860 Office tel construction site. $V{\;}={\;}K(D/\sqrt{W})^{-n}$, where the values for n and k are estimated tobe 0.371 and 1.551. From this ground vibration equation, the max. charge weight per delay time against distance from blasting point is calculated. Detailed blasting method is also presented. 2. To measure the horizontal displacement in directions perpendicular to the borehole axis, 6 inclinometers installed around working sites. The displacement at the begining was comparatively high because the installation of struts was delayed, but after its installation the values showed a stable trend. Among them, the displacement by 3 inclinometers installed on a temporary parking area showed comparatively high values, for example, the displacement measured at hole No. IC-l recoded the max. 47.04mm for 6 months and at hole No. IC-2 recorded the max. 57.33mm for 7 months. So, all of these data was estimated below a safe standard value 103mm. 3. Seven strain gauge meter was installed of measure the magnitude and change of stress acted on structs. The measured value of maximum stress was $-465{\;}kgf/\textrm{cm}^2,{\;}-338.4{\;}kgf/\textrm{cm}^2,{\;}302.3{\;}kgf/\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively. In compareto the allowable stress level of steel, they are estimated to be safe.

To reduce the chattering errors of reed switch sensors in the automatic remote measurement of water meter a reed switch sensor was analyzed and improved. The operation of reed switch sensors can be described as a mechanical contact switch by approximation of permanent magnet piece to generate an electrical pulse. The reed switch sensors are used mostly in measurement application to detect the rotational or translational displacement. To apply for water flow measurement devices, the reed switch sensors should keep high reliability. They are applied for the electronic digital type of water flow meters. The reed switch sensor is just mounted simply on the conventional mechanical type flow meter. A small magnet is attached on a pointer of the water meter counter rotor. Inside the reed sensor two steel leaf springs make mechanical contact and apart repeatedly as rotation of flow meter counter. The counting electrical contact pulses can be converted as the water flow amount. The MCU sends the digital flow rate data to the server using the wireless communication network. But the digital data is occurred difference or won by chattering noise. The reed switch sensor contains chattering error by it self at the force equivalent position. The vibrations such as passing vehicle near to the switch sensor installed location causes chattering. In order to reduce chattering error, most system uses just software methods, for example using filter algorithm and also statistical calibration methods. The chattering errors were reduced by changing leaf spring structure using mechanical characteristics.
This paper is concerned with the development of a measurement system using field measuring device which will give the membrane stress of the membrane structures. Up to this point, several techniques on measurement of membrane stresses has been proposed and some have been used in the fields, but accuracy of the measured stresses to be far from reliable one. Such situation has not been changed until recent days, we do not have the measurement device on which we can depend. On top of that, due to the different properties in cross directions for material of the membrane, the stress in the warp direction is different from that in the fill one. A new method is proposed to measured membrane stresses in two different direction separately, where instead of membrane stresses directly, an external force perpendicular to the membrane to be applied. A portable device can measure the applied force and the displacement. A special testing bed to be fabricated to accommodate $50cm{\times}50$ manbrane specimen which can apply 5 ton load in two orthogonal direction. A special device using push-pull gage was developed. To measure the membrane stresses in warp and fill direction separately, a different length of the tips are used. The measuring device which can called tension meter, can be calibrated on the testing bed, and optimized the length and shape of tip.

Spring-mass models have been widely accepted to explain the basic dynamics of human gait. Researchers found that the leg stiffness increased with gait speed to increase energy efficiency. However, the difference of leg stiffness change with gait speed between the young and the elderly has not been verified yet. In this study, we calculated the lower limb stiffness of the elderly using walking model with an axial spring. Vertical stiffness was defined as the ratio of the vertical force change to the vertical displacement change. Seven young and eight elderly subjects participated to the test. The subjects walked on a 12 meter long, 1 meter wide walkway at four different gait speeds, ranging from their self-selected speed to maximum speed randomly. Kinetic and kinematic data were collected using three force plates and motion capture cameras, respectively. The vertical stiffness of the two groups increased as a function of walking speed. Maximum walking speed of the elderly was slower than that of the young, yet the walking speed correlated well with the optimal stiffness that maximizes propulsion energy in both groups. The results may imply that human may use apparent limb stiffness to optimize energy based on spring-like leg mechanics.
We employed electrical resistivity and optical borehole imaging methods to identify underground cavities and determine ground subsidence rate at the study area affected by land subsidence due to abandoned underground mines. At the study site 1, the anomalous zones of low resistivity ranging between 100 ohm-meter and 150 ohm-meter were observed and confirmed as an abandoned underground mine by subsequent borehole drilling and optical borehole imaging. Although the electrical resistivity survey was unavailable due to the paved surface of the study site 2, we were able to locate another abandoned underground mine with the collapsed mine shaft based on the distribution of the ore veins and confirmed it with borehole drilling. In addition, we measured vertical displacements of underground features indicating underground subsidence by conducting optical borehole imaging 6 times over a period of 43 days at the study site 2. The displacement magnitude at the deep segment caused by subsidence appeared to be 3 times larger than those at the shallow segment. Similarly, the displacement duration at the deep segment was 4 times longer than those at the shallow segment. Therefore, the combination of electrical resistivity and optical borehole imaging methods can be effectively applicable to detect and monitor ground subsidence caused by underground cavities.

In this study, a monotonic loading test to estimate structural capacity of 12 meter long full scale precast pre-stressed concrete beam specimen was performed with a 2,000 kN dynamic actuator. A couple of embedded steel plate was installed at the ends of the beam and specimens were connected to steel girder frame with high tension bolts. Nominal compressive strength of pre-stressed concrete beam and slab were 50 MPa and 24 MPa respectively. Two HD25 tensile steel reinforcements were welded on vertical plate of embedded steel plate. Pre-stressed concrete beam specimen was loaded by displacement control method with a certain loading pattern which was repeated loading and unloading with 10mm increment displacement. About 88.34%, 86.97% and 66.83% of displacement restoration ratios were evaluated at elastic, inelastic and plastic behavior region of specimen respectively.

In this study, the response and behavior of machine foundations resting on dry and saturated sand was investigated experimentally. A physical model was manufactured to simulate steady state harmonic load applied on a footing resting on sandy soil at different operating frequencies. Total of (84) physical models were performed. The parameters that were taken into consideration include loading frequency, size of footing and different soil conditions. The footing parameters are related to the size of the rectangular footing and depth of embedment. Two sizes of rectangular steel model footing were used. The footings were tested by changing all parameters at the surface and at 50 mm depth below model surface. Meanwhile, the investigated parameters of the soil condition include dry and saturated sand for two relative densities; 30 % and 80 %. The dynamic loading was applied at different operating frequencies. The response of the footing was elaborated by measuring the amplitude of displacement using the vibration meter. The response of the soil to dynamic loading includes measuring the stresses inside soil media by using piezoelectric sensors. It was concluded that the final settlement (St) of the foundation increases with increasing the amplitude of dynamic force, operating frequency and degree of saturation. Meanwhile, it decreases with increasing the relative density of sand, modulus of elasticity and embedding inside soils. The maximum displacement amplitude exhibits its maximum value at the resonance frequency, which is found to be about 33.34 to 41.67 Hz. In general, embedment of footing in sandy soils leads to a beneficial reduction in dynamic response (displacement and excess pore water pressure) for all soil types in different percentages accompanied by an increase in soil strength.

In this study, the dynamic behavior of friction bearings of PSC (Pre-Stressed Concrete) box train continuous bridge was numerically analyzed at 10 km/h intervals up to 600 km/h according to the increasing speed of the next-generation high-speed train. A frame model was generated targeting the 40-meter single-span and two-span continuous PSC box bridges in the Gyeongbu High-Speed Railway section. The interaction forces including the inertial mass vehicle model with 38 degrees of freedom and the irregularities of the bridge and track were considered. It was calculated the longitudinal displacement, cumulative sliding distance and displacement speed of the bridge bearings at each running speed so that compared with the dynamic behavior trend analysis of the bridge. In addition, long-term friction test standards were applied to evaluate the durability of friction plates.
The connection part (corbel) between bottom slab and side wall in inground LNG storage tank has hinge conditions partly fixed by using anchor bars to reduce stress concentration. The corbel deforms in both radial and vertical directions under load conditions of the LNG tank such as LNG temperature, hydraulic pressure, etc. Membrane is an important part from the viewpoint of design because the deformation of the corbel is transformed directly to the membrane and superposed with other deformations. Behavior of the corbel has been investigated through various sensors to measure temperature, load and displacement. And the test data have been compared with finite element results analysis to propose a more reasonable design of LNG storage tank.
