  • A circular composite spar in the wing of ultra-light aircraft is subjected to both bending moment and transverse shear loads. However, the beam being used in the aircraft may be inefficient because the design would not take into account the characteristics of the circular tube that supports the bending moment in top and bottom arc parts and the transverse load in left and right ones. Therefore, it is necessary to efficiently fabricate the circular tube beam by properly selecting the stacking sequences or the laminated composite structure. In order to increase both bending and transverse shear strengths of the beams, in this study, a cross-section of circular tube is divided into four arcs: top, bottom, left and right ones. The commercial program, MSC/NASTRAN is used to calculate vertical displacement and the normal and shear strains with variation of parameters such as division angle of arc and fiber orientation. Based on the results, the effective parameters for the new circular composite beam are presented to increase its bending and shear strengths.

  • In this paper, a deformation measurement technology for nuclear fuel rods is proposed. The deformation measurement system includes a high-definition CMOS image sensor, a lens, a semiconductor laser line beam marker, and optical and mechanical accessories. The basic idea of the proposed deformation measurement system is to illuminate the outer surface of a fuel rod with a collimated laser line beam at an angle of 45 degrees or higher. For this method, it is assumed that a nuclear fuel rod and the optical axis of the image sensor for observing the rod are vertically composed. The relative motion of the fuel rod in the horizontal direction causes the illuminated laser line beam to move vertically along the surface of the fuel rod. The resulting change of the laser line beam position on the surface of the fuel rod is imaged as a parabolic beam in the high-definition CMOS image sensor. An ellipse model is then extracted from the parabolic beam pattern. The center coordinates of the ellipse model are taken as the feature of the deformed fuel rod. The vertical offset of the feature point of the nuclear fuel rod is derived based on the displacement of the offset in the horizontal direction. Based on the experimental results for a nuclear fuel rod sample with a formation of surface crud, an inspection resolution of 50 ${\mu}m$ is achieved using the proposed method. In terms of the degree of precision, this inspection resolution is an improvement of more than 300% from a 150 ${\mu}m$ resolution, which is the conventional measurement criteria required for the deformation of neutron irradiated fuel rods.

  • The shear strength reduction finite element method (SSRFEM) is a powerful tool for slope stability analysis. The factor of safety (FOS) of the slope can be easily calculated only through reducing effective cohesion (c′) and tangent of effective friction angle ($tan{\varphi}^{\prime}$) in equal proportion. However, this method may not be applicable to soil slope under wetting-drying cycles (WDCs), because the influence of WDCs on c′ and $tan{\varphi}^{\prime}$ may be different. To research the method of estimating FOS of soil slopes under WDCs, this paper presents an experimental study firstly to investigate the effects of WDCs on the parameters of shear strength and stiffness. Twelve silty clay samples were subjected to different number of WDCs and then tested with triaxial test equipment. The test results show that WDCs have a degradation effect on shear strength (${\sigma}_1-{\sigma}_3)_f$, secant modulus of elasticity ($E_s$) and c′ while little influence on ${\varphi}^{\prime}$. Hence, conventional SSRFEM which reduces c′ and $tan{\varphi}^{\prime}$ in equal proportion cannot be adopted to compute the FOS of slope under conditions of WDCs. The SSRFEM should be modified. In detail, c′ is merely reduced among shear strength parameters, and elasticity modulus is reduced correspondingly. Besides, a new approach based on sudden substantial changes in the displacement of marked nodes is proposed to identify the slope failure in SSRFEM. Finally, the modified SSRFEM is applied to compute the FOS of a slope example.

  • Multi-target X-ray tube is a new type X-ray source, and can be applied in many fields such as sensitive X-ray fluorescence analysis and medical imaging. In this work, we report an electric field modulation multi-target X-ray tube, which contains four targets (Cr, Ni, Au, Mo) coated on a Beryllium (Be) window. A four-valve electric field deflector was developed to deflect the electron beam to bombard the corresponding targets. Particle dynamics analysis software was employed to simulate the particle tracking of electron beam. The results show that the 30 keV electron beam could get a 6.7 mm displacement on the target plane by 105 V/m electric field. The focus areas are about 2 mm × 5 mm and 4 mm × 2.5 mm after deflection in two directions. Thermal behavior calculated by ANSYS shows that the designed target assembly could withstand a 10 W continuous power. The optimum target thicknesses and emission spectra were obtained by Geant4 when the thickness of Be window was 300 mm and the electron beam incident angle was 0.141 rad. The results indicate that this multi-target X-ray tube could provide different X-ray sources effectively.

  • In this paper, the ductile fracture criteria for a marine structural steel (EH36) are presented and validated. The theoretical background of the recently developed Hosford-Coulomb (HC) fracture strain model and the DSSE fracture strain model which was developed to apply to the shell elements is described. In order to accurately estimate the flow stress in the large strain range up to the fracture, the material constants for the combined Swift-Voce constitutive equation were derived by the numerical analyses of the smooth and notched specimens made from the EH36 steel. As a result of applying the Swift-Voce flow stress to the other notched specimen model, a very accurate load - displacement curve could be derived. The material constants of the HC fracture strain and DSSE fracture strain models were independently calibrated based on the numerical analyses for the smooth and notch specimen tests. The user subroutine (VUMAT of Abaqus) was developed to verify the accuracy of the combined HC-DSSE fracture strain model. An asymmetric notch specimen was used as verification model. It was confirmed that the fracture of the asymmetric specimen can be accurately predicted when a very small solid elements are used together with the HC fracture strain model. On the other hand, the combined HC-DSSE fracture strain model can predict accurately the fracture of shell element model while the shell element size effect becomes less sensitive.

  • Gait kinematics and kinetics have a similar tendency between men and women, yet it remains unclear how walking while carrying a load affects the gait mechanism. Twenty adults walked with preferred velocity on level ground of 20 m relative to change of a load carriage (no load, 15%, 30% of the body weights) aimed to observe gait mechanism. We measured gait posture using the three-dimensional image analysis and ground reaction force system during stance phase on left foot. In main effect of gender difference, men showed increased displacement of center of gravity (COG) compared to women, and it showed more extended joint angle of hip and knee in sagittal plane. In main effect of a load difference, knee joint showed more flexed postuel relative to increase of load carriage. In main effect of load difference on the kinetic variables, medial-lateral force, anterior-posterior force (1st breaking, 2nd propulsive), vertical force, center of pressure (COP) area, leg stiffness, and whole body stiffness showed more increased values relative to increase of load carriage. Also, men showed more increased COP area compared to women. Interaction showed in the 1st anterior-posterior force, and as a result of one-way variance analysis, it was found that a load main effect had a greater influence on the increase in the magnitude of the braking force than the gender. The data in this study explains that women require little kinematic alteration compared to men, while men in more stiff posture accommodate an added load compared to women during gait. Additionally, it suggests that dynamic stability is maintained by adopting different gait strategies relative to gender and load difference.

  • The failure mode of piping systems due to seismic loads is the low-cycle fatigue failure with ratcheting, and it was found that the element in which nonlinear behavior is concentrated and damage occurs is the elbow. In this study, to quantitatively express the failure criteria for a pipe elbow of SCH40 3-inch carbon steel under low-cycle fatigue, the limit state was defined as leakage, and the in-plane cyclic loading test was conducted. For the carbon steel pipe elbow, which is the vulnerable part to seismic load of piping systems, the damage index was represented using the moment-deformation angle relationship, and it was compared and analyzed with the damage index calculated using the force-displacement relationship. An attempt was made to quantitatively express the limit state of the carbon steel pipe elbow involving leakage using the damage index, which was based on the dissipated energy caused by repeated external forces.

  • In this study, the effect of circle tunnel on the force distribution around underground rectangular gallery was investigated using theoretical approach, experimental test and Particle flow code simulation (PFC). Gypsum model with dimension of 1500×1500 mm was built. Tensile strength of material was 1 MPa. Dimension of central gallery was 100 mm×200 mm and diameter of adjacent tunnel in its right side was 20 mm, 40 mm and 60 mm. Horizontal distance between tunnel wall and gallery edge were 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 mm. using beam theory, the effect of tunnel diameter and distance between tunnel and gallery on the induced force around gallery was analyzed. In the laboratory test, the rate of loading displacement was set to 0.05 millimeter per minute. Also sensitivity analysis has been done. Using PFC2D, interaction between tunnel and gallery was simulated and its results were compared with experimental and theoretical analysis. The results show that the tensile force concentration has maximum value in center of the rectangular space. The tensile force concentration at the right side of the axisymmetric line of gallery has more than its value in the left side of the galleries axisymmetric line. The tensile force concentration was decreased by increasing the distance between tunnel and rectangular space. In whole of the configurations, the angles of micro cracks fluctuated between 75 and 105 degrees, which mean that the variations of tunnel situation have not any influence on the fracture angle.

  • The general screen used to separate the particle size of recycled aggregate has restrictions when dealing with moisturized materials because of the blockage phenomenon. Therefore, in this study, to improve the separation efficiency of the conventional screen, the excellence of additional vibrating device based on spring was decided by a simulation experiment based on the discrete element method (DEM). The motion characteristic was investigated by analyzing the displacement, amplitude, and strain angle based on the spring design. Further, the particle motion was simulated by applying spring motion. The material flow and separation efficiency of the screen applied spring were confirmed as 9.2 kg/s and 97 %, respectively. Consequently, the improvement in the screen applied with blockage prevention spring was confirmed by comparing with the conventional screen.

  • The concrete cap, which was established on the top of the micropile, usually considered as an important structural component in micropile supported foundation systems. However, relatively few studies have been made on the load sharing behavior of the capped micropile foundation systems. The primary objective of this study is to assess the load sharing behavior of the capped micropile foundation systems. Therefore, a full-scale test on an instrumented capped micropile is conducted for establishing the load-displacement responses. Nonlinear numerical method was used to quantify the load sharing behavior of the pile cap and micropile respectively. As a result, it was found that the pile cap shares about 50% load from final loading steps in the case of 2 by 1 micropile foundation systems. In the case of 2 by 2, the pile cap shares about 30% load from final loading steps. In addition, the load sharing behavior of the micropile cap becomes larger with an increase in spacing and the battered angle of micropile respectively.
