Novel composite membranes, which delivered high separation performance for propylene/propane mixtures, were developed by coating inert poly(ethylene-co-propylene) rubber (EPR) onto a porous polyester substrate, followed by the physical distribution of $AgBF_4$. Scanning electron microscopy-wavelength dispersive spectrometer (SEM-WDS) revealed that silver salts were uniformly distributed in the EPR layer. The physical dispersion of the silver salts in the inert polymer matrix, without specific interaction, was characterized by FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopy. The high separation performance was presumed to stem from the in-situ dissolution of crystalline silver ionic aggregates into free silver ions, which acted as an active propylene carrier within a propylene environment, leading to facilitated propylene transport through the membranes. The membranes were functional at all silver loading levels, exhibiting an unusually low threshold carrier concentration (less than 0.06 of silver weight fraction). The separation properties of these membranes, i.e. the mixed gas selectivity of propylene/propane ${\sim}55$ and mixed gas permeance ${\sim}7$ GPU, were stable for several days.
Discrete element modeling (DEM) in concrete technology is concerned with design and use of models that constitute a schematization of reality with operational potentials. This paper discusses the material science principles governing the design of DEM systems and evaluates the consequences for their operational potentials. It surveys the two families in physical discrete element modeling in concrete technology, only touching upon probabilistic DEM concepts as alternatives. Many common DEM systems are based on random sequential addition (RSA) procedures; their operational potentials are limited to low configuration-sensitivity features of material structure, underlying material performance characteristics of low structure-sensitivity. The second family of DEM systems employs concurrent algorithms, involving particle interaction mechanisms. Static and dynamic solutions are realized to solve particle overlap. This second family offers a far more realistic schematization of reality as to particle configuration. The operational potentials of this family involve valid approaches to structure-sensitive mechanical or durability properties. Illustrative 2D examples of fresh cement particle packing and pore formation during maturation are elaborated to demonstrate this. Mainstream fields of present day and expected application of DEM are sketched. Violation of the scientific knowledge of to day underlying these operational potentials will give rise to unreliable solutions.
Dispersion of coolant jets in a film cooling flow field is the result of a highly complex interaction between the film cooling jets and the mainstream. In order to investigate the effect of blowing ratios on the film cooling of a turbine blade, cylindrical body model is used. Mainstream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter is $7.1{\times}10^4$. The effects of coolant flow rates are studied for blowing ratios of 0.7, 1.0, 1.3 and 1.7, respectively. The temperature distribution of the cylindrical model surface is visualized with infrared thermography (IRT). Results show that the film cooling performance could be significantly improved by the shaped injection holes. For higher blowing ratio, the spanwise-diffused injection holes are better due to the lower momentum flux away from the wall plane at the hole exit.
In this study, we investigated the generation of pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in a cell with oblique non-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surfaces. It was found that the monodomain alignment of the NLC is obtained with an angle of incidence of $70{\sim}85^{\circ}$ on PI surface. We consider that the monodomain alignment of NLC is attributed to anisotropic dispersion force due to photo-depolymerization of polymer on PI surfaces. Also, pretilt angle of NLC is generated about $3^{\circ}$ with an angle of incidence of $70{\sim}75^{\circ}$. It is considered that the pretilt angle generation in NLC is attributed to interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surfaces.
Compression ignition direct injection diesel engines employed a high pressure injection system have been developed as a measure to improve a fuel efficiency and reduce harmful emissions. In order to understand the effects of the pressure variation, many experimental works have been done, however there are many difficulties to get data in engine condition. This work gives numerical results for the high pressure effects on spray characteristics in wide or limited space with near walls. The gas phase is modelled by Eulerian continuum conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy and fuel vapour fraction. The liquid phase is modelled using the discrete droplet model approach in Lagrangian form and the drop behavior on a wall is calculated with a new droplet-wall interaction model based on the experiments observing individual drops. The droplet distributions, vapour fractions and gas flows are shown in various injection pressure cases. In free spray case which the injection spray has no wall impaction, the spray dispersion and vapour fraction increase and drop sizes decrease with increasing injection pressure. The same phenomena appears more clearly in wall impaction cases.
Resource management in grid computing environment is essential for integration and interaction among heterogeneous resources. This paper discusses resource management methods of centralized and decentralized broker-based modeling for solving complex problems of resource management and presents design and development of the decentralized broker-based resource management modeling in grid computing environment. This model comprises a global resource broker and a local resource broker, and we derive reduction of communication and functional dispersion of Job management using a local resource broker. The simulation experiment shows the improvement of resource utilization and average response time and proves that this model improves utilization of resources and replies to user requests promptly.
We study the effects of the cluster environment on galactic morphology by defining a dimensionless angular momentum parameter ld, to obtain a quantitative and objective measure of galaxy type. The use of this physical parameter allows us to take the study of morphological transformations in clusters beyond the measurements of merely qualitative parameters, e.g. S/E ratios, to a more physical footing. To this end, we employ an extensive SDSS sample, with galaxies associated with Abell galaxy clusters. The sample contains 93 relaxed Abell clusters and over 34,000 individual galaxies. We find that the median ld value tends to decrease as we approach the cluster center, with different dependences according to the mass of the galaxies and the hosting cluster; low and intermediate mass galaxies showing a strong dependence, while massive galaxies seems to show, at all radii, low ld values. By analysing trends in ld as functions of the nearest galactic neighbour environment, clustercentric radius and velocity dispersion of clusters, we can identify clearly the leading physical processes at work. We find that in massive clusters (s > 700 km/s), the interaction with the cluster central region dominates, whilst in smaller clusters galaxy-galaxy interactions are chiefly responsible for driving galactic morphological transformations.
We explore the role of various environments in triggering star formation (SF) and narrow-line active galactic nucleus (AGN) in SDSS spiral galaxies and the SF-AGN connection, using a volume-limited sample with $M_r$ < -19.5 and 0.02 < z < 0.055 selected from the SDSS Release 7. To avoid the dependency of AGN activity on bulge mass, the central velocity dispersion of the sample galaxies is limited to have a narrow range of $130{\leq}{\sigma}{\leq}200km\;s^{-1}$. We note that in gas sufficient galaxies, AGN feeding lags behind starburst, whereas as the gas exhausts, the SF slows down and AGN seems to even prevent the SF, and thus divide the high-${\sigma}$ sample into two subsamples according to their cold gas content at central region traced by fiber star formation rate, $SFR_{fib}$. We find that a high density (cluster) environment causes a significant increase in AGN activity as well as gas depletion in host galaxies. However, the finding is only noticeable in the high-${\sigma}$ and low $SFR_{fib}$ sample. It seems that a galaxy interaction with the nearest neighbor directly affects the SF of the central region. However, it is unclear whether it directly affects AGN activity.
In aqueous slurry processing of silicon nitride, the interaction of dispersant and binder used as polymeric processing additives on the silicon nitride particle surface was studied to identify the effect of these processing polymeric additives on the ceramic powder processing. The adsoprtion isotherm study of anionic organic molecule as dispersant and nonionic organic molecules as binder of silicon nitricde was studied to investigate the effect of these processing organic additives on the physicochemical properties of silicon nitride particles. As anionic molecule adsorbed onto silicon nitrice surface, the IEP of silicon nitride shifted toward acidic pH and changed the stability of silicon nitride particle. However, the adsorption of binder as nonionic organic molecule onto silicon nitride surface did not changed the IEP but caused the decrease of electrostatic potentials of silicon nitride. These distinctive adsorption behaviors of organic additives on silicon nitride particles can be closely correlated to the stability of silicon nitride particles suspended in aqueous media.
Numerical simulation is essential to indicate the flow of the atmosphere in the region with a complicated topography which consists of many mountains in the inland while it is neighboring the seashore. Such complicated topography produces land and sea breeze as the mesoscale phenomenon of meteorology which results from the effect of the sea and inland. In the mesoscale simulation examines, the change of the temperature in relation to the one of the sea surface for the boundary condition and, in the inland, the interaction between the atmosphere and land surface reflecting the characteristic of the land surface. This research developed and simulated PNULSM to reflect both the SST and vegetation effect as a bottom boundary for detailed meteorological numerical simulation in coastal urban area. The result from four experiments performed according to this protocol revealed the change of temperature field and wind field depending on each effect. Therefore, the lower level of establishment of bottom boundary suitable for the characteristic of the region is necessary to figure out the atmospheric flow more precisely, and if the characteristic of the surface is improved to more realistic conditions, it will facilitate the simulation of regional environment.
