  • Spectrally resolved interferometry (SRI) is an attractive technique to measure absolute distances without any moving components. In the spectral interferogram obtained by a spectrometer, the optical path difference (OPD) can simply be extracted from the linear slope of the spectral phase. However, SRI has a fundamental measuring range limitation due to maximum and minimum measurable distances. In addition, SRI cannot distinguish the OPD direction because the spectral interferogram is in the form of a natural sinusoidal function. In this investigation, we describe a direction determining SRI and propose the optimal conditions for determining OPD direction. Spectral phase nonlinearity, caused by a dispersive material, effects OPD direction but deteriorates spectral interferogram visibility. In the experiment, various phase nonlinearities were measured by adjusting the dispersive material (BK7) thickness. We observed the interferogram visibility and the possibility of direction determination. Based on the experimental results, the optimal dispersion conditions are provided to distinguish OPD directions of SRI.

  • We propose a pseudo optical N-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PO PAM-N) signal using a few externally-modulated lasers (EMLs) operating at different wavelengths, which is suitable for upgrading the transmission speed over an optical link of < 10 km single-mode fiber with low-cost components. To compare a PO PAM-N signal with that of a standard optical PAM-N signal, we perform experiments for evaluating the performance of a 51.56-Gb/s PO PAM-4 signal and standard 51.56-Gb/s optical PAM-4 signal. The receiver sensitivity (at $BER=10^{-5}$) of the PO PAM-4 signal is 1.5 dB better than the receiver sensitivity of a standard optical PAM-4 signal. We also investigate the feasibility of PO PAM-N (N = 4, 8, and 16) signals operating at 103.12 Gb/s, considering relative intensity noise, timing jitter, extinction ratio (ER) of EMLs, and dispersion. From the results, a PO PAM-8 signal performs better than PO PAM-4 and PO PAM-16 signals at 103.12 Gb/s. Finally, we suggest a timing control method to suppress the effect of dispersion in a PO PAM-N signal. We show that the tolerance to dispersion of a 103.12-Gb/s PO PAM-8 signal can be improved to ${\pm}40ps/nm$ by applying a proposed scheme.

  • Nanoimprint lithography is a next generation lithography technology, which enables to fabricate nano to micron-scale patterns through simple and low cost process. Nanoimprint lithography has been applied in various industry fields such as light emitting diodes, solar cells and display. Functional patterns, including anti-reflection moth-eye pattern, photonic crystal pattern, fabricated by nanoimprint lithography are used to improve overall efficiency of devices in that fields. For these reasons, in this study, sub-micron-scaled functional patterns were directly fabricated on Si and glass substrates by thermal imprinting process using ZnO nano-particles dispersion resin. Through the thermal imprinting process, arrays of sub-micron-scaled pillar and hole patterns were successfully fabricated on the Si and glass substrates. And then, the topography, components and optical property of the imprinted ZnO nano-particles/resin patterns are characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope, Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and UV-vis spectrometer, respectively.

  • In this paper, we report the experimental results of a hybrid wideband fiber amplifier. The amplifying medium is a concatenated hybrid fiber consisting of Er-doped fiber (EDF) and dispersion compensating fiber (DCF). The gain mechanisms are based on stimulated emission in the EDF and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in the DCF. Since we simultaneously use optical amplification by the two processes, the gain bandwidth is easily expanded over 105 nm by a two-tone pumping scheme. Using an experimental setup constructed with a hybrid structure of EDF-DCF-EDF, we analyzed the spectral behavior of amplified spontaneous emission for pumping powers. We achieved an optical gain of over 20 dB in the wavelength range from 1,500 to 1,600 nm under optimized pumping conditions to make the spectral gain shape flat.

  • The aim of this study is to develop the water quality simulation model (BAYQUAL) that deal with the physical, chemical and biological aspects of fate/behavior of pollutants in the bay. BAYQUAL is a two dimensional, time-variable finite element water quality model based on the flow simulation model in bay(BAYFLOW). The algorithm is composed of a hydrodynamic module which solves the equations of motion and continuity, a pollutnat dispersion module which solves the dispersion-advection equation. The applicability and feasibility of the model are discussed by applications of the model to the Kwangyang bay of south coastal waters of Korea. Based on the field data, the BAYQUAL model was calibrated and verified. The results were in good agreement with measured value within relative error of 14% for COD, T-N, T-P. Numerical simulations of velocity components and tide amplitude(M2) were agreed closely with the actual data.

  • We present the derived kinematic characteristics of low-${\alpha}$ thin-disk and high-${\alpha}$ thick-disk stars in the Milky Way, investigated with a sample of about 33,900 G- and K-type dwarfs from the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE). Based on the level of ${\alpha}$-element enhancement as a function of [Fe/H], we separate our sample into thin- and thick-disk stars and then derive mean velocity, velocity dispersion, and velocity gradients for the U, V and W velocity components, respectively, as well as the orbital eccentricity distribution. There are notable gradients in the V velocity over [Fe/H] in both populations: -23 km s-1 dex-1 for the thin disk and +44 km s-1 dex-1 for the thick disk. The velocity dispersion of the thick disk decrease with increasing [Fe/H], while the velocity.

  • LCD color filters have been manufactured in a process called photolithography to date, but various printing methods have been studied currently in response to the trend of low-end LCD panels. Direct Printing Process is a suitable fabrication technique to develope pigment components whose dimensions are in nano. The success of this process depends on the systematic preparation of pigment millbase. Conventional millbase dispersions are constituted of the organic pigments, monomer, dispersant and solvents. An experimental study on the rheology of millbase dispersions is presented. Subsequently, this thesis attempts to find out the dispersive characteristics as well as the selection of pigments, monomers and dispersants in the part of millbase among the stages of manufacturing LCD color filters using the direct printing methods. The dispersive characteristics were shown through analytic devices such as PSA, Rheometer, etc.

  • This paper presents the joint characteristic function of the first- and second-order polarization-modedispersion (PMD) vectors in installed optical fibers that are almost linearly birefringent. The joint characteristic function is a Fourier transform of the joint probability density function of these PMD vectors. We regard the random fiber birefringence components as white Gaussian processes and use a Fokker-Planck method. In the limit of a large transmission distance, our joint characteristic function agrees with the previous joint characteristic function obtained for highly birefringent fibers. However, their differences can be noticeable for practical transmission distances.

  • The dispersion and Poiar force components of the surface free energy of PET fibers untreated and treated with hydrophilic chemicals, such as nonionic-soil release polymer (SRP), anionic, nonionic and hydrophilic silicone, were determined using harmonic-mean and geometric-mean methods. Contact angles of water and methylene iodide on the fibers were determined from the adhesion tensions using tensiometric method. Fibers treated with hydrophilic chemicals have the increased polar force component and the decreased dispersion force component. The adhesion tensions of triolein for the hydrophilic treated fibers were smaller than that for untreated fiber.

  • In many cases, the quality of a product is determined by several correlated quality variables. Control charts have been used for a long time widely to control the production process and to quickly detect the assignable causes that may produce any deterioration in the quality of a product. Numerical switching performances of multivariate cumulative sum control chart for simultaneous monitoring all components in the dispersion matrix ${\Sigma}$ under multivariate normal process $N_p({\underline{\mu}},{\Sigma})$ are considered. Numerical performances were evaluated for various shifts of the values of variances and/or correlation coefficients in ${\Sigma}$. Our computational results show that if one wants to quick detect the small shifts in a process, CUSUM control chart with small reference value k is more efficient than large k in terms of average run length (ARL), average time to signal (ATS), average number of switches (ANSW).
