Wave lengths of tsunamis are shorter than those of tides, and the dispersion effect of tsunamis is relatively strong. Thus, it should be properly considered in the numerical simulation of distant tsunami propagation for better accuracy. In the present study an active dispersion-correction scheme using explicit scheme is developed to take into account the dispersion effect in the simulation of tsunami propagation using one-dimensional finite element method based on wave equation. The validity of the dispersion-correction scheme proposed in this study is confirmed through the comparision of numerical solutions calculated using the present scheme with analytical ones considering dispersion effect of waves.

Numerical prediction of the pollutant dispersion over a two-dimensional hilly terrain is presented. The dispersion model used in the present work is based on the gradient diffusion theory and the finite-volume method on a non-orthogonal boundary-fitted grid system. The numerical model is validated by comparing the results with the available experimental data for the flat-floor dispersion within a turbulent boundary-layer. The numerical error analysis is performed based on the guideline of Kasibhatla et al.(1988) for the elevated-source dispersion in the flat-floor boundary layer having a power-law velocity and linear eddy-diffusivity profile. The influences of the two-dimensional hilly terrain on the dispersion from a continuously released source are numerically investigated by changing the emission locations and heights. It is found that the distributions of ground-level concentration are strongly influenced by the source location and the emission height. Hence, the terrain amplification factor is greatly enhanced when the pollutant source is located within a flow separation region. Dispersion from a source of short duration is also simulated and the duration time of the pollutant is compared at several downstream locations on a hilly terrain. The results of the numerical prediction are applied to the evaluation of environmental impacts due to the automobile exhausts at the seashore highway with a parallel mountain range.

In this study, sequential mixing model (SMM) was proposed based on the Taylor's theory which can be summarized as the fact that longitudinal advection and transverse diffusion occur independently and then the balance between the longitudinal shear and transverse mixing maintains. The numerical simulation of the model were performed for cases of different mixing time and transverse velocity distribution, and the results were compared with the solutions of 1-D longitudinal dispersion model (1-D LDM) and 2-D advection-dispersion model (2-D ADM). As a result it was confirmed that SMM embodies the Taylor's theory well. By the comparison between SMM and 2-D ADM, the relationship between the mixing time and the transverse diffusion coefficient was evaluated, and thus SMM can integrate 2-D ADM model as well as 1-D LDM model and be an explanatory model which can represents the shear flow dispersion in a visible way. In this study, the predicting equation of the longitudinal dispersion coefficient was developed by fitting the simulation results of SMM to the solution of 1-D LDM. The verification of the proposed equation was performed by the application to the 38 sets of field data. The proposed equation can predict the longitudinal dispersion coefficient within reliable accuracy, especially for the river with small width-to-depth ratio.

The purpose of this study is to estimate the factors that affect college students' drinking needs and spending. An analysis model to estimate the determinants affecting drinking needs was applied with a truncated Poisson model and a truncated negative binomial model. Tests to select more appropriate models of the two types were made using the comparison of log-likelihood function and the over-dispersion test. The analysis result was interpreted by applying the truncated negative binomial model as the truncated Poisson model showed over-dispersion. We also applied the Tobit model to analyze the determinantsthat affect college students' expenditure on drinking. According to the analysis, gender, grade, allowance and parental occupation were the factors influencing statistics, and gender, type of household income, and student religion were the factors influencing expenditure.
The characteristics of flow and pollutant dispersion for fire scenarios in an urban area are numerically investigated. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model coupled to a mesoscale weather research and forecasting (WRF) model is used in this study. In order to more accurately represent the effect of topography and buildings, the geographic information system (GIS) data is used as an input data of the CFD model. Considering prevailing wind, firing time, and firing points, four fire scenarios are setup in April 2008 when fire events occurred most frequently in recent five years. It is shown that the building configuration mainly determines wind speed and direction in the urban area. The pollutant dispersion patterns are different for each fire scenario, because of the influence of the detailed flow. The pollutant concentration is high in the horse-shoe vortex and recirculation zones (caused by buildings) close to the fire point. It thus means that the potential damage areas are different for each fire scenario due to the different flow and dispersion patterns. These results suggest that the accurate understanding of the urban flow is important to assess the effect of the pollutant dispersion caused by fire in an urban area. The present study also demonstrates that CFD model can be useful for the assessment of urban environment.
A fractional step finite difference model for the longitudinal dispersion of nonconservative contaminants is developed. It is based on splitting the longitudinal dispersion equation into a set of three equations each to be solved over a one-third time step. The fourth-order Holly-Preissmann scheme, an analytic solution, and the Crank-Nicholson scheme are used to solve the equations for the pure advection, the first-order decay, and the diffusion, respectively. To test the model, it is applied to simulate the longitudinal dispersion of continuous source released into a nonuniform flow field as well as the dispersion of an instantaneous source in a uniform flow field. The results are compared with the exact solution and those computed by an existing model. Compared to the existing model which uses Euler method for the first-order decay equation, the present model yield more accurate results as the decay coefficient increases.
The information about the dispersion and scavenging of traffic-related pollutants at the locations near busy expressways is very helpful to highway planners for developing better plans to reduce exposures to air pollution for people living as well as children attending schools and child care centers near roadways. The objective of the current study was to give information in the dispersion and scavenging of vehicle-derived pollutants at the region near a busy urban expressway by a combination of two different model calculations. The modified Gaussian dispersion model and the Lagrange type below-cloud scavenging model were applied to evaluate $NO_x$ dispersion and DEP (Diesel exhaust particles) wet removal, respectively. The highest $NO_x$ was marked 53.17 ppb within 20-30 meters from the target urban expressway during the heaviest traffic hours (08:00AM-09:00AM) and it was 2.8 times higher than that of really measured at a nearby ambient measuring station. The calculated DEP concentration in size-resolved raindrops showed a continuous decreasing with increasing raindrop size. Especially, a noticeable decrease was found between 0.2 mm and 1.0 mm raindrop diameter.

In this study, the atmospheric dispersion of radioactive material ($^{137}Cs$) was simulated with regard to its impact within a 50-km radius from the Kori Nuclear Power Plant (NKPP) based on two different types of models (the non-steady-state puff model CALPUFF and the lagrangian model HYSPLIT) during the spring of 2012 (May 2012). The dispersion distribution of $^{137}Cs$ calculated in the CALPUFF model was similar to that of the HYSPLIT model, but the magnitudes of differences in its spatio-temporal concentrations between the two models were different. The $^{137}Cs$ concentrations simulated by the CALPUFF were significantly lower than those of the HYSPLIT due to a limitation of puff models (e.g. puff size growth over time). The CALPUFF had the advantage of determining the dispersion of radioactive materials and their impacts on the surrounding regions, compared with the HYSPLIT that had high concentrations of $^{137}Cs$ in only small local areas with the movement of air masses along the local winds.
The computations of the flowfield and pollutant dispersion over a flat plate and the Russian hills of various slopes are described. The Gaussian plume and the puff model have been used to calculate concentration of pollutant. The Reynolds-averaged unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with low Reynolds κ-ε model has been used to calculate the flowfield. The flow data of a flat plate and the Russian hills from Navier-Stokes equation solutions has been used as the input data for the puff model. The computational results of flowfield agree well with experimental results of both a flat plate and Russian hills. The concentration prediction by the Gaussian plume model and the Gaussian puff model also agrees flirty well with experiments.

A diffusion coefficient is an important parameter in the prediction of atmospheric dispersion using a Gaussian plume model, and its modelling approach varies. In this study, dispersion coefficients recommended by the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (U. S. NRC's) regulatory guide and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission's (CNSC's) regulatory guide, and used in probabilistic accident consequence analysis codes MACCS and MACCS2 have been investigated. Based on the atmospheric dispersion model for a hypothetical accidental release recommended by the U. S. NRC, its influence to atmospheric dispersion factor was discussed. It was found that diffusion coefficients are basically predicted from a Pasquill- Gifford curve, but various curve fitting equations are recommended or used. A lateral dispersion coefficient is corrected with consideration for the additional spread due to plume meandering in all models, however its modelling approach showed a distinctive difference. Moreover, a vertical dispersion coefficient is corrected with consideration for the additional plume spread due to surface roughness in all models, except for the U. S. NRC's recommendation. For a specified surface roughness, the atmospheric dispersion factors showed differences up to approximately 4 times depending on the modelling approach of a dispersion coefficient. For the same model, the atmospheric dispersion factors showed differences by 2 to 3 times depending on surface roughness.
