  • In order to obtain mono-dispersed Fe NPs with high saturation magnetization, quantitative analysis method to investigate the growth dynamics of the Fe NPs synthesized by a conventional thermal decomposition method has been developed. As a result, fast nucleation process promotes formation of ~4 nm of initial nucleus with a non-equilibrium phase, resulting in low saturation magnetization. And slow particle growth with atomic-scaled surface precipitation mode (< 100 atoms/($min{\cdot}nm^2$)) can form the growth layer on the surface of initial nucleus with high saturation magnetization (~190 emu/$g_{Fe}$) as an equilibrium a phase of Fe. Therefore, higher stabilization of small initial nucleus generated just after the injection of $Fe(CO)_5$ should be one of the key issues to achieve much higher $M_s$ of Fe NPs.

  • Uncertainty in concrete properties, including concrete modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture, are predicted by developing a microstructural homogenization model. The homogenization model is developed by analyzing a concrete representative volume element (RVE) using the finite element (FE) method. The concrete RVE considers concrete as a three phase composite material including: cement paste, aggregate and interfacial transition zone (ITZ). The homogenization model allows for considering two sources of variability in concrete, randomly dispersed aggregates in the concrete matrix and uncertain mechanical properties of composite phases of concrete. Using the proposed homogenization technique, the uncertainty in concrete modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture (described by numerical cumulative probability density function) are determined. Deflection uncertainty of reinforced concrete (RC) beams, propagated from uncertainties in concrete properties, is quantified using Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. Cracked plane frame analysis is used to account for tension stiffening in concrete. Concrete homogenization enables a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between concrete materials and structural modeling, which is necessary for realistic serviceability prediction.

  • On-demand droplet generation with tunable droplet volume is fundamental in many droplet microfluidic applications. In this work, we propose an acoustofluidic method to produce water-in-oil droplets with prescribed volume in an on-demand manner. Surface acoustic waves produced from a slanted interdigital transducer are coupled with parallel laminar streams of dispersed and continuous phase fluids. Acoustic radiation force acting on the fluid interface enable generation of droplets in a microfluidic chip. We expect that the proposed acoustofluidic droplet generation method will serve as a promising tool for on-demand droplet generation with on-chip droplet volume control.

  • Soybean lecithin liposomes composed phosphatidyl choline, phosphatidyl ethanolamine, phosphatidyl inositol and phosphatidic acid were prepared by using the previously developed supercritical reverse phase evaporation method. The effect of phospholipid composition on the formation of liposomes and physicochemical properties were examined by means of trapping efficiency measurements, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering and zeta potential measurements. The trapping efficiency of liposomes for D-(+)-glucose made of CNA-Ⅰ which contains approximately 95% phosphatidyl choline is higher than that of CNA-II and CNA-O which contain approximately 32% phosphatidyl choline. However there is no any difference between the trapping efficiency of liposomes for D-(+)-glucose made of CNA-II which has saturated hydrocarbons tails and that of liposomes made of CNA-O which has unsaturated hydrocarbon chains. The electron micrographs of liposomes made of CNA-II and CNA-O show small spherical liposomes with diameter of $0.1\sim0.25{\mu}m$, while that of CNA-I shows large unilamellar liposomes with diameter of $0.2\sim1.2{\mu}m$. These results clearly show that phospholipid structure of phosphatidylcholine allows an efficient preparation of large unilamellar liposomes and a high trapping efficiency for water soluble substances. Liposomes made of CNA-II and CNA-O remained well-dispersed for at least 14 days, while liposome suspension made of CNA-I separated in two phase at 14 days due to aggregation and fusion of liposomes. The dispersibility of liposomes made of CNA-I is lower than that of CNA-II and CNA-O due to the smallar zeta potential of CNA-I.

  • The mechanical properties of nickel particle polyethylene composites were estimated by using a finite element method. Two steps were carried out in this analysis; the first step was to consider an unit model composed of spherical cell in the center of the matrix and the second step was to consider a total model composed of unit model. Two phase and three phase models were used, since another third phase were observed between matrix and nickel particle. Finite element method permits the calculation of the stress and displacement, assuming the arbitrary loads. Elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio and stress distribution of composites were obtained from this output. Comparison of the calculation by finite element method and the experimental results for Ni-filled polyethylene showed good agreement in tensile properties.

  • Thin film on SiO$_2$ glass was synthesized by a dip-coating method from the ZrO$_2$ sol which had dispersed nanosize Au particle under ambient atmosphere. After heat treatment of the prepared thin film, the characteristics were investigated by X-ray diffraction, UV-VIS spectrometer, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). It was found that ZrO$_2$ thin film with 100 nm thickness was crystallized to tetragonal phase at 50$0^{\circ}C$. The size of dispersed Au particle was 15∼40nm and the film had a smooth surface with a roughness of 0.84 nm. The film showed nonlinearity characteristics with absorption peaks at 630∼670nm visible region because of the plasma resonance of Au metallic particles.

  • Deep sea water has cold temperature, abundant nutrients and minerals, and good water quality that is pathogen-free and stable. Compared with surface water, deep sea water contains more nutrition salt, such as nitrogen and phosphor. Moreover, if has the good balance of minerals. Because of the ability of the spray drying process to produce a free-flowing power considering of spherical particles with a well-defined size distribution and the rapid drying times for heat-sensitive material, spray drying is attractive for a wide range of applications spray drying is a unique unit operation in which powders are produced from a liquid feed in a single processing step. Key component of the process are atomizer, spray chamber. Design of spray chamber should be based on the atomizer type, the production rate, and the particle size required. Because of the complex processes taking place during spray drying, traditional design method are based on pilot-plant tests and empirical scale-up rules. Modern technique such as CFD have a role to play in design and troubleshooting.

  • Recently, new generation systems using solar cells or fuel cells are under development. Particularly, it is expected that small scale, utility interactive, dispersed PV system will be widely diffused in the near future. The inverter used in coupling the PV array with utility lines is an important factor determining the overall performance of power generation systems. This paper presents the design and control method of the single-phase PV inverter system that is capable of compensating reactive power including harmonic distortions. It is shown that reactive power caused by rectifier load can be compensated by the proposed inverter system.

  • Spherical fine powders of tungsten oxide powders were prepared by the emulsion evaporation method. The characteristics of the powders prepared were examined by means of TGA, X-ray diffraction, SEM and image analysis. The emulsions were prepared by fast mixing of aqueous phase containing tugsten and the organic phase which composed of kerosene, surfactant, and paraffin oil. Precursors were made by evaporating the emulsionin the kerosene bath at $160^{\circ}C$, and then calcined at $650^{\circ}C$ in order to produce tungsten oxide powders. The average particle size of the tungsten oxide powders was $0.5\mutextrm{m}$ and their shapes were spherical at the both case of w/o and o/w type emulsions. As the HLB value of the surfactant increased and the concentration of tungsten ions decreased the mean particle siqe of tungsten oxide powders decreased whereas agglomerationsize increased. The optimum concentration of Span 80 was 8 percent by volume, and the optimum stirring speed in the emulsion formation was 5000 rpm in order to obtain fine and well dispersed $WO_3$ powders.

  • Titanium dioxide was prepared by Polymer Complex Solution Method(PCSM) according to the mole ratio of Titanium (IV) isopropoxide(TTIP)/solvent and polymer(Poly Ethylene Glycol). Polymer electrolytes were usually made by dispersing preproduced ceramic nanoparticles in a polymer matrix. Using this method, pure and nano-sized $TiO_2$ powder was synthesized through a simple procedure and polymer entrapment route. At the optimum amount of the polymer, the titanium ions are dispersed in solution and a homogeneous polymeric network is formed. The maximum intensity of anatase phase of $TiO_2$ was achieved by calcining at $500^{\circ}C$ for 2h. The synthesized $TiO_2$ powders were nano-sized and the average size was about 50nm. Anatase/Rutile ratio of the synthesized $TiO_2$ was 70%/30%.
