  • Objectives: Hormone replacement therapy may relieve many symptoms of menopause; however, hormone replacement therapy may increase the risk of breast cancer, stroke, and dementia. This case study describes the effect of Hoechunboeum-tang on the menopausal disorder of hot flashes, which has been well documented as a cause of distress to patients undergoing menopause. Methods and Results: Two female patients suffering from severe hot flashes related to menopausal disorders were administered the herbal medicine, Hoechunboeum-tang. Measurements included hot flash frequency over a 24 hour period, hot flash severity (visual analogue scale), and hot flash-related daily interference and were recorded during the last week before herbal medicine and again after 7 and 15 days of herbal treatment. The patients were asked about their hot flash symptoms 6 months later and both reported that the symptoms had been successfully reduced after herbal treatment and were still reduced after 6 months. Conclusions: Hoechunboeum-tang could have a beneficial effect on menopausal disorder with hot flashes.

  • PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine how biofeedback training with Shaker exercise effects the activation of the cervical myocardial muscle in stroke with swallowing disorder. METHODS: From June 2018 to September 2018, 30 patients who were hospitalized at C hospital and K hospital in Daegu, and K hospital in Gumi were surveyed to meet the criteria for selection. The participants were classified into three groups, and Shaker exercise was applied three times a day, five times a week, for four weeks; visuoauditory biofeedback group (VABG), visual biofeedback group (VBG), and self-exercises group (SG). In addition, the suprahyoid muscle activity was performed three times (before intervention, after intervention, and after two weeks). RESULTS: The pre and post-test comparisons, revealed a significant difference between the three groups (p<.01); VABG had the highest suprahyoid muscle activity. The post-test and follow-up test produced similar results in, the three groups (p>.05). The mean comparison showed the smallest difference in VABG, indicating that muscle persistence was the best. CONCLUSION: Shaker exercise has an effect on suprahyoid muscle activation. Biofeedback training, which provides an input of multi-sensory information in swallowing disorder treatment is recommended because it has the greatest effect when combined with visuoauditory biofeedback.

The changing symptom of panic disorder was estimated by BAI(Beck Anxiety Inventory). Results : The patient was diagnosed with yin-yang-yi-cha-hou-lao-fu bing, number 397 provision, and took Jukyeopseokgo-tang herb medication about 113 days. The BAI score changed 37 to 12. Conclusions : The therapeutic intervention and herb medication showed a therapeutical effect on the patient. The anxiety and helplessness of the patient was improved. This patient's panic disorder was associated with poor sleep patterns and sensitivity to minor things and controled by Jukyeopseokgo-tang. The relationships between poor sleep patterns and 陰陽易差後勞復病, shortness of breath when sensitive to minor things and 少氣 need further study.

  • This study investigated the relationships between eating disorder risk, body image perception, weight control, and dietary habits in Korean women. Body shape perception, the Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26) and dietary habit information were collected by a self-administered questionnaire to 373 adult women and the data were analyzed by the Chi-square test. 31.4% of the women were classified in the eating disorder group by a score of over 20 points on the EAT-26. Compared to the normal group, more women in the eating disorder risk group perceived that a thin body shape was the ideal body shape and were dissatisfied with their body shape. This group was also more interested in weight control and more likely to try weight control methods. The eating disorder risk group was more likely to skip meals and snacks than the normal group. In addition, they had a greater appetite and a higher frequency of overeating than the normal group. Over 30% of the Korean women surveyed were categorized at high risk of eating disorders. They were more likely to overestimate body weight and shape and tried to control their weight by inappropriate methods. To prevent eating disorders in adult women, nutrition education programs should incorporate strategies to change inaccurate self-body image and to disseminate information about healthy weight control methods.

  • Background and Objectives : Patients with so-called 'functional voice disorders' who have structurally normal larynges and demonstrate muscle misuse in the larynx, and those with several interacting causes including habitual muscle tension, are probably better defined as having a 'muscle misuse voice disorder'. The purpose of this study was to analyze the voice and effectiveness of voice therapy in patients with functional voice disorders and to provide a guide for the treatment of functional voice disorder. Materials and Method : The records of 35 patients, presenting with functional voice disorder and receiving voice therapy during October, 2001 to September, 2002, were reviewed. Prior to voice therapy, the stroboscopic examination of their larynx, aerodynamic and acoustic analysis was done. The results of voice therapy were compared according to the patient's subjective, perceptual evaluation of voice, and maximal phonation time. Results : Patient's subjective, perceptual evaluation, and maximal phonation time showed superior results after voice therapy. Conclusion : The result of this study indicates that voice therapy is an effective treatment method of patients with functional voice disorder, especially muscular tension dysphonia.

  • Panic disorder with agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder in which there are repeated attacks of intense fear and anxiety, and a fear of being in places where escape might be difficult, or where help might not be available in case of a panic attack. We experienced a 39 year-old man who had Panic disorder with agoraphobia from recent onset and whose condition was improved through oriental medical treatment. We treated the patient with Herbal medications and Giungoroen (至言高論)-wise saying and lofty opinion) and Gyeongjapyeongji (驚者平之)-mental stress must be eased with tranquilizers) and Relaxation therapy. Giungoroen is psychological therapy that promotes patient's recognition of disease and will to cure it through conversation. Gyeongjapyeongji is desensitizing the unease. Relaxation therapy is the use of muscular relaxation techniques in treatment. This result suggests that oriental medical treatment has good effect on Panic disorder with agoraphobia.

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of eating disorder belief and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance on female high school students' eating attitude. Questionnaires regarding eating disorder belief, sociocultural attitudes towards appearance, and eating attitude were administered to 900 1st and 2nd grade female high school students in Gyeonggi Province. Finally 875 questionnaires were collected and statistically analyzed through Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, factor analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression. The main results of the study were as follows: 1) Eating disorder belief, sociocultural attitudes towards appearance, and eating attitude revealed a positive correlation. 2) While control over eating, weight/shape as a means to acceptance, internalization, and awareness were significant predictors of drive for thinness, control over eating, internalization, and weight/shape as a means to acceptance were significant predictors of bulimia. 3) Internalization had a moderating effect on the relationship between eating disorder belief and eating attitude (drive for thinness, bulimia).

  • Objectives: As the elderly population grows and the prevalence of depression increases, the incidence of geriatric depression disorder will continue to increase. The effect of an intensive Korean medicine treatment program on geriatric depression disorder was studied. Methods: Geriatric depression disorder patients who received treatment over a period of three years were reviewed, with the geriatric depression score (GDS) used as the primary outcome. The intensive Korean medical treatment program applied to the geriatric depression disorder patients consisted of herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, moxibustion, meditation, qigong exercises, and reminiscence therapy. Results: The GDS scores of patients who received the intensive Korean medical treatment program decreased from an average of 19.57 (${\pm}5.52$) to 15.76 (${\pm}6.99$) and there was a significant difference. Conclusions: When the intensive Korean medical treatment program was applied to geriatric depression disorder patients, the symptoms of depression improved. This treatment program will be helpful for improving symptoms in patients and can be applied by trained clinicians.
