  • The end-of-life vehicles (ELV) are important recycling sources, and there are several stages involved in the recycling such as dismantling, shredding, and treatment of shredder residues (ASR). The legal recycling rate should be at least 95% on and after 2015, while we need a proper system to monitor recycling of ELV components and to calculate the practical recycling rate. The paper suggests a monitoring system that calculates practical recycling rates of dismantled components by use of a database of standard recycling rate as well as a web-based monitoring, which is linked to the Eco Assurance system for electric & electronic equipment and vehicle (EcoAS). Also the system supports dismantling and monitoring process by incorporating a standard vehicular component database, which facilitates recording dismantled weight data but also monitoring of dismantled components.

  • This study aims at evaluating the environmental impacts stemmed from the End-of-Life Vehicle(ELV) treatment systems in Korea, using Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) method. In this study, both environmental burden from the ELV dismantling process & recycling processes and environmental benefit which were derived from the avoided environmental impacts by substituting recycled materials for virgin materials were considered. First of all, the key issues which were defined as the environmental aspects that account for more than $1\%$ out of the total environmental impacts were identified from the Life Cycle Impact Assessment(LCIA). $CO_2$, crude oil, natural gas, coal, etc. were found out to be the key issue parameters. From the LCI Analysis and LCIA studies, it was shown that the significant environmental aspects were related with the recycling process of ferro scrap, the shredding process of compressed car bodies and the dismantling process of end-of-life engines. In particular, the recycling process of ferro scrap has the most significant effects on the environmental impacts of the ELV treatment systems. Based on these results, it is recommended to improve the recycling process of ferro scrap in order to make the ELV treatment systems more environmentally sound.

  • Under the production system of a free market economy, the modern consumers'goods that feature current trends reveal diverse aspects of the whole society and culture. This phenomenon is progressing at such a rapid speed that theories can barely keep up to explain it dearly. It is believed that the reason for the lag in academic theories is the formation of pluralistic values in human lifestyles due to the development of science and information communication. The pluralism of values in contemporary society is being studied in many academic fields, and the design among these fields often sees such a phenomenon as one of the post-modernism concepts, where post-modernism suggests a diversification and dismantling of modernism. In other words, the current design is closely watching products that are totally different from existing products, from complex and conceptual outcomes in the field of design to products that reflect various trends. Thus, it is true that package design, which proactively reflects current trends, freely traverses among specific domains of various fields that have been determined tacitly. It is also believed that other fields are also reflecting the same developments. Such a phenomenon is strikingly revealed with so-called 'fancy products', while other products 'parody' package design. This study sees the phenomenon as dismantling the border between product design and package design. The examined package design reflects the broader characteristics of the times, based on current concepts and meanings, after reviewing design examples.

  • This paper introduces a innovative diamond wire saw cutting technology and its experimental verification that can be utilized for cutting heavy structures. While conventional diamond wire saw cutting technologies such as water cooled cutting method and dry cutting method cause severe environmental problems due to generating massive concrete sludge or dust scattering, the proposed method can eliminate those problems considerably. Through extensive experiments using heavy structure test bed and real bridge pier structure, comprehensive analysis and comparative evaluation about various cutting methods were performed. As a result, the innovative diamond wire saw cutting method could achieve a similar cutting and cooling performance to the water cooled cutting method without generating concrete sludge and it showed an improved cutting and cooling performance to the dry cutting method without dust scattering. Consequently it is confirmed that the suggested cutting technology can be a promising environment-friendly alternative in the field of heavy structure dismantling.

  • In accordance with the growing trend of decommissioning nuclear facilities, research on the cutting process is actively proceeding worldwide. In general, a thermal cutting process, such as plasma cutting is applied to decommissioning a nuclear reactor pressure vessel (RPV). Plasma cutting has the advantage of removing the radioactive materials and being able to cut thick materials. However, when operating under water, the molten metal remains in the cut plane and re-solidifies. Hence, cutting is not entirely accomplished. For these environmental reasons, it is difficult to cut thick metal. The contact arc metal cutting (CAMC) process can be used to cut thick metal under water. CAMC is a process that cuts metal using a plate-shaped electrode based on a high-current arc plasma heat source. During the cutting process, high-pressure water is sprayed from the electrode to remove the molten metal, known as rinsing. As the CAMC is conducted without using a shielding gas, such as Argon, the electrode is consumed during the process. In this study, CAMC is introduced as a method for dismantling nuclear vessels and the relationship between the metal removal and electrode consumption is investigated according to the cutting conditions.

  • In decommissioning activities of nuclear facilities, the analyses and evaluations of data(man power, radiation exposure, waste outputs, equipments, etc ) is very important to accomplish effective decommissioning and dismantling. To handle the data from decommissioning activities of research reactor, we developed its database system. By using database system, we come to filter and analyze the date of decommissioning activities and we can evaluate the extraordinary decommissioning features of research reactor. It is likely to lay out and estimate the optimal plan of decommissioning. We expect that the database system of effective decommissioning activities build up the foundation of commercial reactor decommissioning.

  • As the tower crane accident emerged as a social issue in 2017, various government measures were prepared. Most of the measures are focused on erecting, climbing, and dismantling phases. Analyzes of 84 serious accidents related to tower cranes from 2000 to 2018 and 104 near misses accidents from 2016 to 2018 revealed that 50% of the serious accidents occurred during the operating phase. The main occupation influencing operating phase accidents was signalman(81.6% of serious accidents), whose communication and competency were governing causes. This result was the same in 294 questionnaires to signalmen. Signal systems and education policies for tower crane signalman in Korea and foreign countries were analyzed, and standardization of wireless signal system and improvement of education system were propose.

  • In recent years, the government's urban housing expansion policy has resulted in increased construction and remodeling work of residential houses and apartments, causing more industrial accidents at elevator installation sites. Typically, accidents occur during the installation and dismantling of work scaffolds inside the hoistways or using non-standardized work scaffolds due to their structural instability. In view of this, the present study deals with the development of a standardized elevator system scaffolding that can be safely installed outside the hoistway, securing the work platform inside the hoistway. An improved version of the scaffolding system eliminates the need to enter the hoistway for the scaffolding installation, thereby preventing accidents.

  • In Korea, a series of noise-reduced aluminum forms are being recently used in apartment housing construction. However, their complicated and time-consuming work processes, and the noise which is still generated due to the inherent property of aluminum when especially installing and dismantling them are have been pointed out as a problem to be certainly solved for increasing their practical use in construction sites. The primary objectives of this study are to propose a conceptual design of a newly designed noise-reduced aluminum form in which the noise can be enormously decreased during form works. The conceptual design in this study improved problems of conventional system aluminum forms, and, later, a system aluminum form developed based on this conceptual design will be able to ensure noise-reduction and safety as well as excellent applicability.
