  • Disc brake noise is an important customer satisfaction and warranty issue for many manufacturers as indicated by technical literature regarding the subject coming from Motor Company. This research describes results of a study to assess disk brake squeal propensity using finite element methods and optimal technique (Kriging). In this study, finite element analysis has been performed to determine likely modes of brake squeal. This paper deals with friction-induced vibration of disc brake system under contact friction coefficient. A linear, finite element model to represent the floating caliper disc brake system is proposed. The complex eigen-values are used to investigate the dynamic stability and in order to verify simulations which are based on the FEM model. In this paper, Kriging from among the meta-modeling techniques is proposed for an optimal design scheme to reduce the brake squeal noise.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate an isothermal characteristics of the condenser surface of disk type heat pipe using PF 5060 and FC 40 as working fluids. Desired temperature range at the condenser surface was $90^{\circ}C{\sim}130^{\circ}C$, which was cooled by natural convection. The operating temperature, the height of vapor space, the wall thickness of condenser, and the existence of a wick structure were considered as experimental factors. The temperature difference and the temperature fluctuation at the condenser surface were analysed to describe the performance of the heat pipe.

  • Propionibacterium acnes have been recognized as pus-forming bacteria triggering an inflammation in acne. The present study was conducted to evaluate antimicrobial activities of Dryopteris crassirhizoma Nakai against these etiologic agents of acne vulgaris and application possibility as a cosmetic resource. D. crassirhizoma crude extract and hexane fraction was prepared and its anti-acne effect against Propionibacterium acnes was investigated with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and paper disk diffusion method. The MIC of D. crassirhizoma crude extract and hexane fraction was 0.008 mg/mL and 0.001 mg/mL, respectively. This implies that D. crassirhizoma extract may be an efficient anti-acne ingredient for cosmetics, as a crude extract. The paper disk diffusion assay showed that its anti-acne effect was similar to that of triclosan. The cytotoxic effect of D. crassirhizoma extract was determined by a colorimetric MTT assay using HaCaT cell line and D. crassirhizoma extract exhibited lower cytotoxic effects. Finally, we examine the stability of D. crassirhizoma extract to temperature and pH. The D. crassirhizoma extract was very stable to high temperatures ($25{\sim}121^{\circ}C$) and to wide pH range ($pH\; 2{\sim}11$), suggesting its utilization for cosmetics.

  • Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb. is a perennial plant, which naturally habitats in whole area of Korea, and where it is popularly used for the traditional remedies. In the present study, A. pilosa Ledeb. extract was prepared to determine the anti-acne effects and application possibility as a cosmetic resource. A pilosa Ledeb. was extracted with methanol and its anti-acne effect against Propionibacterium acnes was investigated via minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and paper disk diffusion method. The MIC of A. pilosa Ledeb. extract and triclosan was 0.05 mg/mL and 0.04 mg/mL, respectively. This implies that A. pilosa Ledeb. extract nay be an efficient anti-acne ingredient for cosmetics, considering that it is a crude extract. The paper disk diffusion assay showed that its anti-acne effect was similar to that of triclosan. Furthermore, A. pilosa Ledeb. extract effectively inhibited the growth of several aerobic microorganisms including Staphylococcus aureus. Finally, we examine the stability of the extract to temperature and pH. The extract was very stable to high temperatures ($70{\sim}121^{\circ}C$) and to pH ($pH 2{\sim}11$), suggesting its utilization for cosmetics.

  • The lens mass determined from the photometrically obtained Einstein time scale suffers from large uncertainty due to the lens parameter degeneracy. The uncertainty can be substantially reduced if the mass is determined from the lens proper motion obtained from astrometric measurements of the source image centroid shifts, ${\delta}{\theta}_c$, by using high precision interferometers from space-based platform such as the Space Interferometry Mission (SIM), and ground-based interferometers soon available on several 8-10m class telescopes. However, for the complete resolution of the lens parameter degeneracy it is required to determine the lens parallax by measuring the parallax-induced deviations in the centroid shifts trajectory, ${\Delta}{\delta}{\theta}_c$ aloe. In this paper, we investigate the detectabilities of ${\delta}{\theta}_c$ and ${\Delta}{\delta}{\theta}_c$ by determining the distributions of the maximum centroid shifts, $f({\delta}{\theta}_{c,max})$, and the average maximum deviations, $(<{\Delta}{\delta}_{c,max}>)$, for different types of Galactic microlensing events caused by various masses. From this investigation, we find that as long as source stars are bright enough for astrometric observations it is expected that $f({\delta}{\theta}_c)$ for most events caused by lenses with masses greater than 0.1 $M_\bigodot$ regardless of the event types can be easily detected from observations by using not only the SIM (with a detection threshold but also the ${\delta}{\theta}_{th}\;\~3{\mu}as)$ but also the ground-based interferometers $(with\;{\delta}{\theta}_{th}\;\~3{\mu}as)$. However, from ground-based observations, it will be difficult to detect ${\Delta}{\delta}{\theta}_c$ for most Galactic bulge self-lensing events, and the detection will be restricted only for small fractions of disk-bulge and halo-LMC events for which the deviations are relatively large. From observations by using the SIM, on the other hand, detecting ${\Delta}{\delta}{\theta}_c$ will be possible for majority of disk and halo events and for a substantial fraction of bulge self-lensing events. For the complete resolution of the lens parameter degeneracy, therefore, SIM observations will be essential.

  • Potentiometric cell oxygen sensors using $CaF_{2}$ were fabricated for monitering the oxygen partial pressure in the low temperature range ($300^{\circ}C{\sim}$500^{\circ}C). The disk type oxygen sensors consist of a reference electrode: Air($O_{2}:21%$)|Pt, a solid electrolyte $CaF_{2}$, and a sensing metel Pt electrode. And the change in open circuit emf of the disk type cell was about 45mV for the oxygen concentration range, $0.1%{\sim}10%$, at the cell temperature of $400^{\circ}C$. Also, the reference electrode incorporated type sensor showed the change of 40mV for 0.1% to 10% oxygen partial pressure range.

  • We have analysed the proper motion data of LHS catalog, to derive the faint end of the luminosity function more precise than ever before, by mean absolute method, and by making use of the reudced proper motion diagram. It is found that the relations between the mean absolute magnitude and the reduced proper motion for main sequence stars, subdwarfs, and white dwarfs are so different that the proper application of an appropriate relation to each group is much more important. The derived luminosity function shows the broad maximum peak from $M_B{\sim}14$ to $M_B{\sim}17$ and declines after $M_B{\sim}17$ up to $M_B{\sim}22$.

  • This is a presentation of the paper published as Kimm et al. 2016, ApJ, 823, 52. We investigate the formation of metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) at the center of two dark matter halos with $Mhalo{\sim}4{\times}107Msun$ at z>10 using cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. We find that very compact (${\leq}1$ pc) and massive (${\sim}6{\times}105Msun$) clusters form rapidly when pristine gas collapses isothermally with the aid of efficient $Ly{\alpha}$ emission during the transition from molecular-cooling halos to atomic-cooling halos. Because the local free-fall time of dense star-forming gas is very short (${\ll}1Myr$), a large fraction of the collapsed gas is turned into stars before stellar feedback processes blow out the gas and shut down star formation. Although the early stage of star formation is limited to a small region of the central star-forming disk, we find that the disk quickly fragments due to metal enrichment from supernovae. Sub-clusters formed in the fragmented clouds eventually merge with the main cluster at the center. The simulated clusters closely resemble the local GCs in mass and size but show a metallicity spread that is much wider than found in the local GCs. We discuss a role of pre-enrichment by Pop III and II stars as a potential solution to the latter issue. Although not without shortcomings, it is encouraging that a naive blind (not tuned) cosmological simulation presents a possible channel for the formation of at least some massive GCs.
