  • There are four servo systems in a DVD drive such as a focus servo system, a tracking servo system, a sled servo system and a spindle servo system. Focus servo system maintains relative distance between lens and disk. In this paper, two plant models for the focus servo system will be presented. One of them is conventional and the other is newly developed. Focus error signal between lens and disk is detected using LDV 2 beam method. The system is observable and all states are estimated. Full states feedback controller and minimum order observed are designed using those states. Impulse responses are simulated. And experiment is performed to compare with responses of conventional model.

  • As HDD moves into new emerging consumer markets, expectations on quietness, as well as performance, have increased. The acoustic noise of HDD seems to be closely related to excitation of the spindle motor system. Recently, as a simple approach to reduce disk vibration, thicker disk, which is 50 mil (1.27mm), starts to use in HDD industry. Noise spectrum of HDD with use of 50 mil disk shows the dominant peaks of 900 Hz, mainly caused by excitations of the disk due to air windage effect. In order to reduce noise at this specific frequency, squeeze air damping effect was investigated by extremely reducing the gap between the disk and the base platform.

  • This paper investigates the dynamics of a HDD spindle system due to the change of FDBs. Flying height of the HDD spindle system is determined through the static analysis of the FDBs, and the stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated through the dynamic analysis of the FDBs. Free vibration characteristics and shock response of the HDD spindle system are analyzed by using the finite element method and the mode superposition method. Experimental modal test is also performed to verify the accuracy of the proposed method. This research shows that the stiffness coefficients of journal heating mostly affect the rocking frequencies because their magnitude are within the range of the stiffness of supporting structure. It also shows that the damping coefficients of thrust bearing mostly affect the axial frequency because the stiffness of thrust bearing is much smaller that that of supporting structure.

  • Most hard disk spindles currently used are supported by oil lubricated hydrodynamic bearings. However, in the trend of increasing spindle speed and reducing size and cost, dynamic behaviors of the bearing such as RRO and NRRO are more important. A novel system evaluating dynamic behavior of hydrodynamic bearings in had disk drive was developed to analyze the effect of groove shapes and parameters.

  • This paper suggests the finite element method to analyze the dynamic characteristics of a rotating HDD system including the supporting structure with general shape. The flexible supporting structure was modeled by tetrahedra elements to produce a finite element model of disk-spindle-shaft-housing system and the dynamic characteristics of the HDD system was investigated due to the change of rotating speed. The validity of the presented method was verified by the modal testing. The supporting structure has an crucial effect on lower modes for HDD system, so that it is required to consider the supporting structure to accurately analyze the dynamic characteristics of HDD system.

  • Complex modal testing method for rotating disks with support motion is introduced which handles the pairs of two point excitation and responses of the disk as complex input and output, respectively. This method utilizes the directivity information and the separation over the rotational speed of forward and backward traveling wave modes or bending coupled modes in the directional frequency response functions(dFRFs). This method synthesizes the normal/reverse dFRFs and complex wave dFRF, which were originally applied to rotating shaft and rotating disk, respectively, and is applied to complex system with dynamically coupled rotating disks and shaft. Experiments with a commercial hard disk drive spindle system demonstrate the validity of this method.

  • Recent trends and the effect of mechanical vibrations in optical disk drives are reviewed in this paper. The Nation from CD drives to high density DVD drives and the development of writable optical disk drives require tighter mechanical tolerance. The demand for faster access time and higher data transfer rate also leads to critical mechanical problems to limit the tracking and focusing servo performance. The current mechanical issues to limit the performance of the drives and various technologies to overcome the mechanical problems are introduced. Vibrations of disk-spindle system, actuator and suspension designs of the optical pick-up, and general mechanical designs for the fast and stable access mechanism are considered.

  • Ball bearings (BB) are generally used in spindle of‘ disk drives at present, but they have been known that BB generate high frequency vibration. Fluid dynamic bearings (FDB) having high-rotational accuracy and small vibration characteristics have been developed as next generation spindles. Especially. a ferro fluid bearing (FFB) spindle has the advantage to prevent leakage and dispersion of lubricating oil using a ferro seal. In this study, we measured damping characteristics and frequency characteristics of these bearing spindles using a high-frequency vibration base. High frequency excitation was added to these bearing spindles mounted on the vibration base, and we proved that FFB and FDB spindles have effective damping.

  • This paper proposes a method to calculate the characteristics of a coupled hydrodynamic journal and thrust bearing of a HDD spindle motor. The governing equations for the journal and thrust bearings are the two dimensional Reynolds equations in $\theta z$ and $ r\theta$ planes, respectively. Finite element method is appropriately applied to analyze the coupled journal and thrust bearing by satisfying the continuity of mass and pressure at the interface between the journal and thrust bearings. The pressure in a coupled bearing is calculated by applying the Reynolds boundary condition and compared with that by using the Half-Sommerfeld boundary condition. The static characteristics are obtained by integrating the pressure along the fluid film. The flying height of spindle motor is measured to verify the proposed analytical result. This research shows that the proposed method can describe HDB in a HDD system more accurately and realistically than the separate analysis of a journal or thrust bearing.
