A Study on the Reduction of Flow Induced Acoustic Noise for a High-Speed Rotating Hexagonal Disk (고속회전 육각형 디스크의 유동기인 소음저감에 관한 연구)

  • The present study describes the prediction of the flow induced noise level of a high-speed rotating hexagonal disk and proposes the way how to reduce it. Since a hexagonal disk, which is used in the laser printer and named a polygon mirror, has six sharp comers, there are low and high pressure regions on each of six edges when it rotates. Therefore, the Pressure difference generates three dimension flow field and causes aerodynamic noise. The Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings(FWH) method is employed for the analysis. We have measured the sound pressure levels and compared them with the computational results. The calculated sound pressure levels agree well with the experimental results. We modified the shape of the edges of a hexagonal disk to reduce the noise level and confirm their effects through numerical computation.

IRON LINE PROFILES FROM RELATIVISTIC ELLIPTICAL ACCRETION DISKS

  • An elliptical accretion disk may be formed by tidally disrupted debris of a flying-by star in an active galactic nucleus (AGN) or by tidal perturbation due to a companion in a binary black hole system. We investigate the iron K$\alpha$ line profiles expecting from a geometrically thin, relativistic, elliptical disk in terms of model parameters, and find that a broad and skewed line profile can be reproduced well. Its shape is variable to the model parameters, such as, the emissivity power-law index, the ellipticity of the disk, and the major axis orientation of the elliptical accretion disk. We suggest that our results may be useful to search for such an elliptical disk and consequently the tidal disruption event.

  • Load/Unload(L/UL) technology includes the benefits, that is, increased areal density, reduced power consumption and improved shock resistance. The main issues of L/UL are no slider-disk contact and no media damage. To make sure L/UL stability, we consider many design parameters in L/UL systems. This paper is focused on disk design parameters through designing a disk bump in outer guard band(OGB). In the case of bump design on the disk, we create a bump by changing bump design parameters as like size and amplitude. From dynamic analysis, we choose optimal bump model with the highest flying height and the longest rising time. When a slider passes over a bump in dynamic system, the slider rise above bump according to bump shape. On the basis of this rising effect on the bump, we apply bump design to classical L/UL system having slider-disk contact possibility. This study is based on the simulation, we finally realize improved slider unloading performance by applying slider dynamic result on unload simulation.

  • This paper shows the method of fabrication of a micro lens array comprised of a Nipkow disk used in a large-area, high-speed confocal microscopy. A Nipkow disk has two components, a micro lens array disk and a pinhole array disk. The microlens array focuses illumination light onto the pinhole array disk and redirects reflected light from a surface to a sensor. The micro lens which are positioned in order on a disk have a hemispheric shape with a few tens of micron in diameter, and can be fabricated by a variety of methods like mechanical machining, semiconductor process, replication process like imprinting process. This paper shows how to fabricate the micro lens array which has a long focal length by reflow and imprinting process.

Effects on TMR and Airflow in HDD Cavity due to Disk Damper Shapes (디스크 댐퍼 형상이 HDD 내부 유동 및 TMR에 미치는 영향)

  • The recording density of a hard disk drive is increasing so rapidly that the storage capacity of a commercial HDD in PC reaches several hundred giga bytes recently. Many technologies related to the HDD, such as servo, media, actuator dynamics, thermo and fluid dynamics, etc. must be developed together to realize high recording density. Especially, researches in the airflow inside the HDD cavity become important as the rotational speed of a disk increases. Typical problem due to the airflow is the vibration of an actuator as the airflow collides with an I-block, suspensions and sliders, that is, FIV(Flow Induced Vibration). This problem is one of the significant sources of increasing TMR so that it must be resolved. In this research, a disk damper shape has been modified to minimize the effects of airflow on the actuator. Modified disk dampers which change flow field inside HDD cavity show good effects not only on the disk (tufter but also on the vibration of an actuator. Vibrations of E- block and slider have been measured with LDV and the airflow field inside the HDD cavity has been analyzed using a commercial package to verify these effects.

  • A brake disk and a pad are important parts that affect the braking stability of a railway vehicle. Especially, because a brake disk stops the vehicle using conversion of the kinetic energy to frictional energy, thermal fatigue cracks are generated by the cyclic thermal load, as frictional heat, on a frictional surface and these cracks cause the fracture of a brake disk. Therefore, many researches for the thermal stress must be performed to improve the efficiency of brake disk and ensure the braking stability. In this study, we performed the thermal stress analysis for a ventilated brake disk with 3-D analysis model. For that, we simplified the shape of a ventilated hole to minimize problems that could be occurred in analysis process. Thermal stress analysis was performed in case that pressure distributions on a frictional surface is constant and is not. To determine pressure distributions of irregular case, pressure distribution analysis for a frictional surface was carried out. Finally using the results that were obtained through pressure distribution analysis, we carried out thermal stress analysis of each case and investigated the results of thermal stress analysis.

  • The recording density of a hard disk drive(HDD) has been increased so rapidly that the storage capacity of a commercial HDD for the personal computer already reaches several hundred giga-bytes recently. Many technologies related to the HDD, such as servo, media, actuator dynamics, thermo and fluid dynamics, etc. must be developed together to realize higher recording density. Especially, airflow inside the HDD cavity has been concerned as the rotational speed of the disk increases. Typical problem due to the airflow is the off-track vibration of a head stack assembly(HSA) as the airflow collides with the E-block, suspensions, and sliders, i.e., the flow induced vibration(FIV). This problem is one of the most significant sources of the track mis-registration(TMR) so that it must be resolved. In this study, disk damper shape is modified to minimize the influence of airflow on the HSA. Modified disk dampers, which change the flow field of the inside cavity of a HDD, show good effects not only on the disk vibration but also on the off-track vibration of a HSA. Vibrations of E-block and slider have been measured with LDV and the airflow field inside the HDD cavity has been analyzed with commercial CFD program to verify these effects.

Parametric study on stress distribution of thin disk specimen of rupture disk corrosion test influencing SCC initiation using finite element analysis

  • Rupture disk corrosion test (RDCT) method has been recently developed for real-time measurement of initiation of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in a high-temperature water. This work presents a parametric study on the stress distribution of a thin disk specimen of RDCT to consider the fixture shape and friction using finite element analysis (FEA). The FEA results showed a dome-shaped deformation of the specimen. From the stress analysis as a function of friction coefficient, it was suggested that the maximum stress was applied around the dome-edge, which was invariant with change to the friction coefficient. This indicates that friction between the fixture and the specimen has little effect on stress distribution. On the other hand, the stress analysis as a function of a rounded-corner radius (Rc) revealed the location at which the maximum stress was applied shifted from the dome edge to the dome center as Rc increased. From SCC initiation tests using the RDCT apparatus in a primary water environment, it was found that SCC initiates at the dome edge when Rc is 0.5 mm, while SCC initiates near the disk center when Rc is 2.0 mm. This experimental result is in good agreement with the results of FEA.

  • In this study, flow characteristics of a small-sized butterfly valve with the valve disk diameter of 25.4 mm have been investigated experimentally for the valve closed angles. In order to examine the flow characteristics of the butterfly valve, loss coefficient (Kv) was obtained at the valve closed angles of 0$^{\circ}$, 5$^{\circ}$, 10$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$ and 30$^{\circ}$. In addition, the effects of the valve disk edge shape were examined. As the result of the experiment, the maximum loss coefficient (Kvmax) was decreased with the increase of the valve closed angle, and it had the maximum decrease ratio at the valve disk angles of 0$^{\circ}$~5$^{\circ}$. The valve disk edge shape have an effect on the loss coefficient of the valve around the small valve closed angle.

  • In this paper, we propose a simple but optimized NC code generating technique for disk cams by means of tool path error control in a five-axis CNC machining center. Using the geometric theorem of the triangle made between manufacturing points and error checkpoint, the tool path error has been studied for disk cams profile generation and an improvement in the profile has been obtained. Then, based on the present manufacturing approach a computer program is developed on $C^{++}$ language to perform and to verify the shape design, the manufacturing simulation, and the optimized generation of the NC code.
