  • A SATA hard disk has been widely used in recent years and NCQ is one of its crucial features. Despite the development from IDE to SATA disk, there is still much room for improvement for a SATA disk. In addition, until now a hard disk is a black box to us and it is very hard to make research at the level of a disk controller. To enhance the performance of NCQ, we try to do I/O clustering over the requests, which combines multiple sequential requests into a single large one. To evaluate the effect of an I/O clustering mechanism, we created a simple but practical SATA hard disk simulator. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is effective in enhancing the I/O performance of a SATA disk.

  • As the flying height decreased, it is essential that hard disk drives perform reliable under various environmental conditions. In this paper the tribological characteristics of a head/disk interface are investigated under various temperature, relative humidity, altitude and outgas conditions. Specially, Contact-Start-Stop(CSS) tests were performed to assess the stiction, acoustic emission, slider take-off behavior, and track average amplitude(TAA). It is shown that the surface damage and head failure are accelerated by high temperature and humidity as well as low ambient pressure.

  • In this work, to identify the dynamic characteristics of disk-spindle system in hard disk drive, experimental modal analysis was performed. And an experimental analysis system including testing apparatus, precision sensors, and analysis software was established in order to perform the testing effectively. From the experimental results, coupled and uncoupled modal characteristics of 3-disk spindle system are clearly identified.

  • Two servo control algorithms are suggested to reduce the tracking error of a computer hard disk drive. One is the repetitive control to reduce the repeatable tracking error which is not explicitly taken into account in the design of a conventional controller. This algorithm was successfully applied to a commercial disk using a fixed point DSP. The other is the multi-rate sampling control which generates the control output between each sampling times since the sampling time of hard disk drives is limited. These algorithms were shown effectively to reduce tracking errors.

  • In this work surface damage of head and disk of head disk drive was analysed using an Atomic Force Microscpoe. The initial damage of the disk occurred by generation of extermely small wear particles. Also it was show that wear particles tend to pile up near the front side of the slider. The surface damage mechanism of drag test and contact-start-stop test was found to be quite similar.

  • In this work the surface damage mechanism of hard disk was investigated. Experiments were peformed to simulate the contact during start and stop. Evidence of significant surface damage appeared after 20,000 cycles. It was found that despite higher hardness, the slider showed more signs of damage than the disk. Optical microscopy showed that the surface was damaged by abrasive action as well as adhesion of wear debris.

  • The heat generated in contact type braking system can cause an unacceptable braking performance. Thermal behavior of ventilated disk brake system is presented in this paper. The temperature and velocity fields of 3-D unsteady simulated model are obtained using a software package "FLUENT". The numerical results show that there exits a temperature nonuniformity between the disk faces contacting with pads. The conduction rate through the disk and pad is calculated and the effect of material conductivity is also investigated.estigated.

  • Near-field recording NFR), advanced optical storage technology, relies on maintaining a small gap between the optical head and the media. This can be accomplished by utilizing the flying optical head concept as in the magnetic recording. In this research, slider/suspension system and plastic disk are tested for their head/disk interface performance. CSS tests are conducted to monitor the frictional and flying characteristics of sliders.
