Toxicity of Disinfectants in Flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, Black Rockfish Sebastes pachycephalus and Black Sea Bream Acanthopagrus schlegelii (시판 소독제의 넙치 Paralichthys olivaceus, 조피볼락 Sebastes pachycephalus, 감성돔 Acanthopagrus schlegelii에 대한 독성)

  • Toxicity of ten commercial disinfectants(hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide, povidon iodine, formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, quaternary ammonium compounds(QAC), didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride(DDAC), ortho-dichlorobenzene, and copper sulfate) was measured by chinook salmon embryo-214 cell line and three fish species: flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, black rockfish Sebastes pachycephalus, and black sea bream Acanthopagrus schlegelii. The $LC_{50}$ levels of 24 hours acute toxicity with the ten disinfectants were tested in three species of fish. Effectiveness of ten chemical disinfectants were varied by each chemical as well as by species. Hydrogen peroxide showed the higest activity at 201, 269, and 139 ppm in the flounder, the black rockfish, and black sea bream, respectively. DDAC showed the lowest activity at 2.1, 1.0, and 1.5 ppm in the flounder, the black rockfish, and black sea bream, respectively. The highest variation was observed in copper sulfate by both the chemicals and the species.

Inhibitory Effect of Disinfectants and Antibiotics on Rusty-root Symptoms in Panax Ginseng C. A. Meyer (소독제 및 항생제의 적변삼 발생 억제 효과)

  • The endophytic bacteria were isolated from the rusty-root ginseng. This isolated bacteria were occurred the rusty-root ginseng with artificial inoculation. For the suppressing of rusty-ginseng, disinfectants, antibiotics, kitosan, micro-organisms and metabolites were tested to isolated endophytic bacterium. All of the isolated bacteria strains were sensitive sodium hypochlorite, however, some of isolated bacteria lines were sensitive to other tested materials. For example, D (didecyl dimethyl ammonium bromide), CIO$_2$, ODDA (octyldecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride + diocyul dimethyl ammonium chloride + alkyl diethyl benzyl ammonium chloride), GD (glutaraldehyde + dimethy cocobenzyl ammonium chloride) suppressed some of bacteria strains. Otherwise, some of antibiotics (e.g. ampicillin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, kanamycin, neomycin, rifampin, streptomycin, tetracycline) were sensitive to the isolated bacteria strains. All of isolated bacteria strainswere inhibitive to the mixed formation with neomycin and streptomycin, and neomycin and tetracycline. Both sodium hypochlorite and antibiotic mixing of neomycin and tetracycline were effective to prevention of rusty-root ginseng of sub-merging ginseng in the ginseng field.

  • The Bacillus subtilis YvaE protein, the small multidrug resistance (SMR) family (TC #2.A. 7.1), is shown to catalyze efflux of multiple cationic drugs including many disinfectants, when it was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. When the yvaD gene was coexpressed with yvaE gene, the yvaD protein, encoded within a single operon with the yvaE gene, is shown to counteract the action ofYvaE. By ethidium efflux analysis, the cells harvoring a vector with yvaE gene showed a rapid ethidium efflux, compared with the control cells. These results clearly suggest that YvaE mediates drug export from the cell cytoplasm.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the sap transmission pattern of CGMMV and to select the disinfectant of sap transmission on watermelon cultivation. Being investigated CGMMV occurrence change after transplanting two diseased plants among 47 plants on the watermelon house, disease spread rapidly from early growth stage of 4 % to late growth stage of 83 %. When the grafting knife and topping scissor was dipped onto the several disinfectants before grafting or topping, disease suppressed 87-95 % on whole milk, skim milk, tri-sodium phosphate, and sodium hypo-chloride solution. Disinfection effects of 88.2 % and 91.2 % on whole milk and skim milk were showed when the hand dipped on the disinfectants.

Effects of Seed Disinfectants for Controlling the Soybean Anthracnose (콩 탄저병에 대한 종자소독제의 효과)

  • Effect of seed disinfectants for controlling the soybean anthracnose was investigated with percent of seedling infection to seed or soil and with inhibition zone on potato dextrose agar. The chemicals tested were as follows: Arasan, Orthocide, Phygon-XL, P.T.A.B. and Mercuron. In seed inoculation, all the chemicals used resulted in significantly less seedling infection than that obtained in control. In the case of soil infection, the result was similar to the above but percentages of the infection were lower than the seed inoculation. Percentages of seedling infection were not necessarily correlated to the inhibition zones on potato dextrose agar by the same chemicals.

Inactivation by Chemical Disinfectants in vitro against Tobacco Mosaic Virus (화학적 제어제에 의한 담배모자이크 바이러스의 불활성화)

  • Numerous chemicals were tasted to show antiviral activity in vitro against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). With a brief exposure of TMV to 1 N HCl or 1-0.1 N NaOH, Virions and their encapsidated RNAs were degraded completely and rapidly. When TMV was exposed to 0.1 N HCl, the hydrolysis of viral capsid in 5 min after treatment was observed in the 1% agarose gel. Virions and their encapsidated RNAs were not degraded by 0.01N HCl of 0.01N NaOH. These characteristics indicate that a short exposure to optimal concentration of acid or base is of practical value in eliminating infectious virus. The treatment of 50% isopropanol or UV light did not damage in viral integrity or their encapsidated RNAs. Disinfection of the agricultural tools and laboratory equipments using appropriate disinfectants is necessary to prevent cross contamination if farm and laboratory.

Searching for a Social Solution for the Humidifier Disinfectant Disaster in Korea (가습기살균제 참사에 대한 사회적 해법의 모색)

  • Eight years have passed since the Korean government's medical agency officially reported that the fatal lung disease found in some hospitals in 2011 was caused by chemical disinfectants used in household humidifiers, marking the introduction of the humidifier disinfectant disaster. Over the past eight years, a medical-scientific approach has been taken by the Korean government in its efforts to solve the problems in terms of relief of and compensation for the potential victims. One of the unintended consequence of this approach has been the fact that the number of "official victims" recognized by the government is quite small compared to the total number of applicants who claim to be suffering from the humidifier disinfectant disaster. This is mainly due to the fact that the medical-scientific approach relies on excessively strict, rigid, and narrow medical-scientific criteria provided by medical experts for judging the degree of applicants' bodily damage from the use of humidifier disinfectants. As a result, this medical-scientific approach is becoming increasingly criticized by patients' organizations mainly composed of rejected applicants. Based on the analysis of the limits of this medical-scientific approach and after clarifying the social implications of the disaster from a sociological perspective, this paper proposes certain social approaches focused on participatory governance as a means of dealing with the current issue. Finally, the paper emphasizes that the act of taking social responses to the humidifier disinfectant disaster should also be considered a process of enlarging and deepening democracy in Korea.

Comparison of Chlorine, Chlorine Dioxide and Ozone as Disinfectants in Drinking Water (정수소독공정에 이용되는 염소, 이산화염소, 오존 소독제의 비교, 고찰에 관한 연구)

  • The experiments for the characterization of inactivation were performed in a series of batch processes with the total coliform as a general indicator organism based on chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone as disinfectants. The water sam-ples were taken from the outlet of settling basin in a conventional surface water treatment system that is provided with the raw water drawn from the mid-stream of the Han River. The inactivation of total coliform was experimentally ana-lyzed for the dose of disinfectant contact time, pH, Temperature and DOC. The nearly 2.4,3.0,3.9 log inactivation of total coliform killed by injecting 1 mか1 at 5 minutes for chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone. For the inactivation of 99.9%(3 log), Disinfectants required were 1.70, 1.00 and 0.60 mか1 for chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone, respec-tively. The higher the pH is, the poorer the disinfections effects are in the range of pH 6-9 by using chlorine and ozone. But the irfluence of pH value on killing effects of chlorine dioxide is weak. The parameters estimated by the models of Chick-Watson, Hom, and Selleck from our experimental data obtained for chlorine are: log(N/ $N_{0}$ )=-0.16 CT with n= 1, log(N/ $N_{0}$ )=-0.71 $C^{0.87}$T with n$\neq$1, for Chicks-Watson model, log (N/ $N_{0}$ )= -1.87 $C^{0.47}$ $T^{0.36}$ for Hom model. For chlorine dioxide are: log(N/ $N_{0}$ )= -1.53 CT with n = 1, log(N/ $N_{0}$ )= -2.29 $C^{0.94}$T with n$\neq$1,, for Chicks-Watson model, log(N/ $N_{0}$ )= -3.64 $C^{0.43}$ $T^{0.24}$ for Hom model and for ozone are: log(N/ $N_{0}$ )= -2.59 CT with n = 1, log(N/ $N_{0}$ )= -2.28 $C^{0.36}$T with n$\neq$1, for Chicks-Watson model, log(N/ $N_{0}$ )= -4.53 $C^{0.26}$ $T^{0.19}$ for Hom model.19/ for Hom model.
