This paper presents a new feature extraction algorithm which can deal with the problems of linear discriminant analysis, widely used for linear dimensionality reduction. The scatter matrices included in linear discriminant analysis are defined by the distances between each datum and its class mean, and those between class means and mean of whole data. Use of these scatter matrices can cause computational problems and the limitation on the number of features. In addition, these definition assumes that the data distribution is unimodal and normal, for the cases not satisfying this assumption the appropriate features are not achieved. In this paper we define a new scatter matrix which is based on the differently weighted distances between individual data, and presents a feature extraction algorithm using this scatter matrix. With this new method. the mentioned problems of linear discriminant analysis can be avoided, and the features appropriate for discriminating data can be achieved. The performance of this new method is shown by experiments.
We propose a method to construct composite feature vector based on discriminant analysis for face recognition. For this, we first extract the holistic- and local-features from whole face images and local images, which consist of the discriminant pixels, by using a discriminant feature extraction method. In order to utilize both advantages of holistic- and local-features, we evaluate the amount of the discriminative information in each feature and then construct a composite feature vector with only the features that contain a large amount of discriminative information. The experimental results for the FERET, CMU-PIE and Yale B databases show that the proposed composite feature vector has improvement of face recognition performance.
The purpose of this study was to classify the somatotype of elderly women and to extract discriminant factors of the classification. The subjects were 218 elderly women aged 60-85 years old. Data were collected from 46 anthropometric and photographic measurements of each subject and analyzed by frequencies, crosstabs, analysis of variance and discriminant analysis. The somatotype was classified into 5 types according to the lateral view. The normal type was defined as the type which the plumb line passes through the cervicale and the lateral malleolus. The lean-back type positioned the plumb line more posteriorly than normal type. The swayback type positioned the plumb line at about the same line as the lean-back type, but curvature of lateral view was prominent. The lean-forward type I and II positioned the plumb line more anteriorly than normal, but the spinal curvature of the type II disappeared. As the result of discriminant analysis, significant discriminant factors of anthropometric measurement were cervicale height, anterior waist height, neck point to posterior waist length, anterior waist length. Photographic measurement were C valve, D value, ∠${\alpha}$ and ∠${\beta}$.

Recently, the multivariate statistical analysis has been used to analyze meaningful information for various data. In this paper, we develope the multivariate statistical analysis system combined with Fisher discriminant analysis, logistic regression, neural network, and decision tree using visual basic 6.0.
The purpose of this study was to identify the college students'frequent usage groups of Western style restaurant in Ansan city. 200 samples among subjects were utilized for the analysis, and 150 samples were reserved far validating the discriminant function. Crosstabs, reliability analysis, stepwise discriminant analysis, and anova analysis were used for this study. The findings from this study were as follows. First, the result suggested that the four variables were important in discriminating the frequent usage group. Second, the result suggested that each discriminating variable between frequent usage groups was different significantly. Third, the result suggested that each usage situation between frequent usage groups was different significantly. Finally the study indicated the implications that could be provided some insight into the types of marketing strategies that can be successfully used by operators who manage Western style restaurants.
This study is done to classify the upper body shapes for late elementary schoolgirls. The sampling was done for 11~12 years-old-girls resident in Busan and Kyungnam. Based on the somatometric charateristics of them, 33 anthropometic and 7 photogrphic measurment data were acquired from every girl. These data are statistically analyzed with the following methods; Factor Analysis, Cluster Analysis, and Discriminant Analysis. Resulting from the factor analysis, it is shown that 79.95% of the whole variances can be explained with 8 factors. Through the cluster analysis, 3 types of upper body shapes can be categorized as follows: Type I has average horizontal size, big vertical size and lots of protruded chest ; Type III has big horizontal size, the mean vertical size, and big upper angle of the back ; Type II has small horizontal and vertical size and long surface length of the upper body. Through the discriminant analysis, the high discriminative items in discriminant function are follows: Upper chest circumference, arm length and waist front length of discriminant function I and waist depth, front length, back breadth, nipple to nipple breadth and upper chest circumference of discriminant function II have large coefficient values.

This paper introduces an adaptive face recognition method based on a Novel Incremental Kernel Nonparametric Discriminant Analysis (IKNDA) that is able to learn through time. More precisely, the IKNDA has the advantage of incrementally reducing data dimension, in a discriminative manner, as new samples are added asynchronously. Thus, it handles dynamic and large data in a better way. In order to perform face recognition effectively, we combine the Gabor features and the ordinal measures to extract the facial features that are coded across local parts, as visual primitives. The variegated ordinal measures are extraught from Gabor filtering responses. Then, the histogram of these primitives, across a variety of facial zones, is intermingled to procure a feature vector. This latter's dimension is slimmed down using PCA. Finally, the latter is treated as a facial vector input for the advanced IKNDA. A comparative evaluation of the IKNDA is performed for face recognition, besides, for other classification endeavors, in a decontextualized evaluation schemes. In such a scheme, we compare the IKNDA model to some relevant state-of-the-art incremental and batch discriminant models. Experimental results show that the IKNDA outperforms these discriminant models and is better tool to improve face recognition performance.
In the present investigation, some multivariate discriminant analyses were done for each population of the native honeybee workers (Apis cerana), which were selected for 15 different localities in spring and 16 in summer form Korea. when the comparison of both seasons for different populations and regardless of seasons were conducted, all the classification results revealed that the differences were significantly prominent. And the length of fore tibia(FTL) was the best contributed character among the 47 morphometric characters used in the analysis.

Similar to regression, many measures to detect influential data points in discriminant analysis have been developed. Many follow similar principles as the diagnostic measures used in linear regression in the context of discriminant analysis. Here we focus on the impact on the predicted classification posterior probability when a data point is omitted. The new method is intuitive and easily interpretable compared to existing methods. We also propose a graphical display to show the individual movement of the posterior probability of other data points when a specific data point is omitted. This enables the summaries to capture the overall pattern of the change.
This study analyzed the linkage characteristics between road runoff and the nearest streams in mountain regions using a discriminant analysis. The road-to-stream linkage is an important characteristic to evaluate whether the contaminant on road surface is transported directly into the nearby channel system. This study evaluated a total of 51 drainage outlets of mountain roads near the Soyanggang Dam. The linkage between road and stream, slope and width of road, and other information necessary for the discriminant analysis have been collected by in situ investigation and by analyzing the Digital Elevation Model. Finally, as independent variables in the discriminant analysis, the contributing road representing the road characteristics (similar to the runoff from the road drainage outlet) and the distance and slope of the connecting channel between road and nearest stream were selected. Among these three, the distance was found to have the highest discriminant power, the contributing road the lowest. Using the discriminant function derived, 40 out of 51 cases (78.4%) were correctly discriminated and the remaining 11 cases (21.6%) were wrongly discriminated. Reasons of wrongly discriminated cases were mainly due to change in drainage outlet direction, excessive runoff, change in road-to-stream path, etc. This result also indicates that the road-to-stream linkage can be introduced or prohibited by exactly the same way.
