  • The model updating problems, which are to find the optimal approximation to the discrete quadratic model obtained by the finite element method, are critically important to the vibration analysis. In this paper, the structured model updating problem is considered, where the coefficient matrices are required to be symmetric and positive semidefinite, represent the interconnectivity of elements in the physical configuration and minimize the dynamics equations, and furthermore, due to the physical feasibility, the physical parameters should be positive. To the best of our knowledge, the model updating problem involving all these constraints has not been proposed in the existed literature. In this paper, based on the semidefinite programming technique, we design a general-purpose numerical algorithm for solving the structured model updating problems with incomplete measured data and present some numerical results to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

  • In this paper, a novel 12/8 segmental rotor type switched reluctance motor (SRM) is proposed. Different from conventional structures, the proposed rotor consists of a series of discrete segments, and the stator is constructed from two types of stator poles: exciting and auxiliary poles. Moreover, in this structure short flux paths are taken and no flux reverse exists in the stator. While the auxiliary poles are not wound by the windings, which only provide the flux return path. Compared with conventional 12/8 SRM, the proposed structure increases the electrical utilization of the machine and decreases the core losses, which may lead to high efficiency. To verify the proposed structure, finite element method (FEM) is employed to get static and dynamic characteristics. Finally, a prototype of the proposed motor is tested for characteristics comparisons.

  • In this paper, a new optimized design methodology is proposed. It integrates the discrete element method (DEM) and real-coded genetic algorithm for the design of landfill lining system subjected to equipment loadings. In applying the design method to a tapered lining system, the effect of the taperness, which means the change of shape for cover soil, is examined. The optimization problem to maximize the capacity of a waste-containment facility is solved using real coded genetic algorithm. Numerical example analysis is carried out for a typical landfill slope structure.

  • In this study, the Discrete Element Code was applied to the analysis of falling rock blocks. The simulation was performed using the PFC2D computer code. Falling rock blocks should be applied as additional force to each others. The force affect the motion of falling rock blocks. This was used to find out the behavior of each blocks. This study revealed that the DEM can successfully capture the behavior of falling rock blocks.

  • A phase-locked Channel-Substrate-Planar(CSP) laser arrays is described. Arrays of emitters with weak coupling are operated in a set of discrete modes determined by the number and spacing of the emitters. The interactions between emitters lead to a splitting of the wave-length and gain which are calculated from the coupling strength. Phase-locked arrays has exhibited to CW output-power as high as 80 m W and the highest order mode will have preferred oscillation. A strong hole burning is occurred at p=30m W. The most stable lasing mode is occurred at element spacing S=3.5\ulcornerm and there is no coupling at S>7 \ulcornerm.

  • This paper expounds the development of a user-friendly expert system for the optimal stacking sequence design of composite laminates subjected to the various rules constraints. The expert system was realized in the graphic-based design environment. Therefore, users can access and use the system easily. The optimal stacking sequence is obtained by means of integration of a genetic algorithm, finite element analysis. These systems were integrated with the rules of design heuristics under an expert system shell. The optimal stacking sequence combination for the application of interest is drawn from the discrete ply angles and design rules stored in the knowledge base of the expert system. For the integration and management of softwares, a graphic-based design environment that provides multi-tasking and graphic user interface capability is built.

  • A novel 12/10 axial field switched reluctance motor (AF-SRM) is proposed for cooling fan applications in this paper. Unlike from conventional structures, the proposed motor uses the axial field instead of the radio field, the rotor is constructed from a series of discrete segments, and the stator poles are constructed from two types of stator poles: exciting and auxiliary poles. This concept improves the torque capability of a previous design by reducing the copper volume, which leads to a higher efficiency. To verify the proposed structure, the finite element method (FEM) and Matlab-Simulink are employed to get characteristics of the proposed SRM. Finally, a prototype of the proposed motor was tested for characteristic comparisons.

  • In Korea, the occurrence frequency of earthquakes has recently increased, compared with the past. So, the various damages for cultural properties due to earthquake can be expected, and especially fortress structure is vulnerable to earthquake. Therefore, the resonable seismic characteristics evaluation is required to secure the safety for fortress structure with the various construction and configuration types. Also, we should consider the various applied load conditions as design variables. To this end, this study classifies fortress structures according to the construction and configuration types, and then applies the discrete element method to model and analyze fortress structures. Finally, the seismic characteristics is evaluated through slip condition due to the analysis results considering the various design variables.

  • Slot field harmonics exist in air gap due to inevitable slot constructure of induction motors. They give rise to noise by the electromagnetic vibration and mechanical pulsation. We calculate the slot field harmonics for varying the ratio of slot width vs teeth pitch using the carter's coefficent. We computate the flux density in air gap by FEM(Finite Element Method) and analyze it in frequency domain using DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform). We develop the new algorithm mixing FEM with DFT.

  • PURPOSES : Evaluation of input parameters determination procedure for dynamic analysis of aggregates in DEM. METHODS : In this research, the aggregate slump test and angularity test were performed as fundamental laboratory tests to determine input parameters of spherical particles in DEM. The heights spreads, weights of the simple tests were measured and used to calibrate rolling and static friction coefficients of particles. RESULTS : The DEM simulations with calibrated parameters showed good agreement with the laboratory test results for given dynamic condition. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that the employed calibration method can be applicable to determine rolling friction coefficient of DEM simulation for given dynamic conditions. However, further research is necessary to connect the result to the behavior of aggregate in packing and mixing process and to refine static friction coefficient.
