The new discrete elements method (DEM) is applied to the one-group neutron transport equation in one-dimensional slab geometry. The fixed source and the criticality problems are treated and three spatial differencing schemes (the DD, the SC, -and the LC schemes) are tested to determine the most computationally efficient in the DEM. In all cases, the accuracy of the results obtained from the DEM shows an improvement over that obtained from the standard discrete ordinates calculations. And the LC scheme gives the most accurate results in the DEM.
Automobile underhood thermal and airflow simulation h α s been performed by using a commercial CFD program, FLUENT. To implement the radiation heat transfer effect to the underhood thermal and flow field, Discrete Ordinates Method(DOM) was used. The cooling fan was modeled by using the Multiple Reference Frame(MRF) technique. For the implementation of the heat exchangers, such as radiator and condenser, which are located in the front side of vehicle, the effectiveness-NTU model was used. The pressure drop throughout the heat exchangers was modeled as Porous media. For the validation of the current computational method, the coolant temperature at the inlet port of the radiator was compared with experimental data, and less than 3% error was observed. Finally, the composed model was used for the cooling fan spec determination process in the development of a new vehicle, and the results showed that the current CFD method could be successfully applied to the vehicle development process.
Neutron transport calculations are extremely challenging due to the high computational cost of large and complex problems. A multilevel octree grid algorithm (MLTG) of discrete ordinates method was developed to improve the modeling accuracy and simulation efficiency on 3-D Cartesian grids. The Balakovo-3 VVER-1000 neutron dosimetry benchmark is calculated to verify and validate this numerical technique. A simplified S2 synthetic acceleration is used in the MLTG calculation method to improve the convergence of the source iterations. For the triangularly arranged fuel pins, we adopt a source projection algorithm to generate pin-by-pin source distributions of hexagonal assemblies. MLTG provides accurate geometric modeling and flexible fixed source description at a lower cost than traditional Cartesian grids. The total number of meshes is reduced to 1.9 million from the initial 9.5 million for the Balakovo-3 model. The numerical comparisons show that the MLTG results are in satisfactory agreement with the conventional SN method and experimental data, within the root-mean-square errors of about 4% and 10%, respectively. Compared to uniform fine meshing, approximately 70% of the computational cost can be saved using the MLTG algorithm for the Balakovo-3 computational model.

The Discrete Ordinates Interpolation Method (DOIM) is tested in three-dimensional enclosures. The radiative transfer equation (RTE) is solved for a linear source term and the DOIM is formulated for a gray medium. Several interpolation methods can be applied to the DOIM scheme. Among them, the interpolation method applicable to an unstructured grid system is discussed. In a regular hexahedron enclosure, radiative wall heat fluxes are calculated and compared with exact solutions. The enclosure has an absorbing, emitting and nonscattering medium and a constant temperature distribution. These results are obtained with varying optical depths (xD = 0.1, 1.0, 10.0). Also, the same calculations are performed in an irregular hexahedron enclosure. The DOIM is applied to an unstructured grid system as well as a structured grid system for the same regular hexahedron enclosure. They are compared with the exact solutions and the computational efficiencies are discussed. When compared with the analytic solutions, results of the DOIM are in good agreement for three-dimensional enclosures. Furthermore, the DOIM can be easily applied to the unstructured grid system, which proves the reliability and versatility of the DOIM.

The discrete ordinates interpolation method (DOIM) has shown good accuracy and versatile applicability for the radiation $problems^{(1,2)}$. The DOIM is a nonconservative method in that the intensity and temperature are computed only at grid points without considering control volumes. However, when the DOIM is used together with a finite volume algorithm such as $SIMPLER^{(3)}$, intensities at the control surfaces need to be calculated. For this reason, a 'quadratic' and a 'decoration' schemes are proposed and examined. They are applied to two kinds of radiation problem in one-dimensional geometries. In one problem, the intensity and temperature are calculated while the radiative heat source is given, and in the other, the intensity and the radiative heat source are computed with a given temperature field. The quadratic and the decoration schemes show very successful results. The quadratic scheme gives especially accurate results so that further decoration may not be needed. It is recommended that the quadratic and the decoration schemes may be used together, or, one of them may be applied for control volume radiative energy balance.

Radiative heat transfer is very important in many combustion systems since they are operated in high temperature. Fluid flows in most of the combustion systems are turbulent to promote fast mixing of the hydrocarbon fuel and oxidant. Major combustion products are $CO_2$ and $H_2O$. The turbulent flow is modeled by using the standard ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ model and the radiation transfer is modeled by using the discrete ordinates method where the radiative gas properties are calculated by using the weighted sum of gray gases model with a gray gas regrouping(WSGGM-RG). Effect of the radiation on the combustion characteristics in a three-dimensional rectangular enclosure is studied by changing the equivalence ratio. Results show that the radiation plays a significant role on the heat transfer in the combustion systems by resulting in a temperature drop of 16% as compared to that obtained without radiation. The equivalence ratio also affects the combustion by different contribution of the radiative transfer with different gas compositions.

Detailed flame structures of the opposed flames formed for different oxidant compositions are studied numerically. The detailed chemical reactions are modeled by using the CHEMKIN code. Only the $CO_{2}$ and $H_{2}O$ are assumed to participate by absorbing the radiative energy while all other gases are assumed to be transparent. The discrete ordinates method and a narrow band based WSGGM with a gray gas regrouping technique are applied for modeling the radiative transfer through non-homogeneous and non-isothermal combustion gas mixtures generated by the opposed flow flames. The results show that the different radiation model can cause different results for flame structures and the WSGGM with gray gas regrouping is successful in modeling the opposed flames with non-gray gas mixture. The results also show that a reasonable information on the flame structure can be obtained from the modeling by considering different chemical compositions of the oxidant.
The purpose of this work is to study the effects of specularly reflecting wall under the combined radiative and laminar free convective heat transfer in an infinite square duct. An absorbing and emitting gray medium is enclosed by the opaque and diffusely emitting walls. The walls may reflect diffusely or specularly. Boussinesq approximation is used for the buoyancy term. The radiative heat transfer is evaluated using the direct discrete ordinates method. The parameters under considerations are Rayleigh number, conduction to radiation parameter, optical thickness, wall emissivity and reflection mode. The differences caused by the reflection mode on the stream line, and temperature distribution and wall heat fluxes are studied. Some differences are observed for the categories mentioned above if the order of the conduction to radiation parameter is less than order of 10$\^$-3/ fer the range of Rayleigh number studied. The differences at the side wall heat flux distributions are observed as long as the medium is optically thin. As the top wall emissivity decreases, the differences between these two modes are increased. As the optical thickness decreases at the fixed wall emissivity, the differences also increase. The difference of the streamlines or the temperature contours is not as distinct as the side wall heat flux distributions. The specular reflection may alter the fluid motion.
Detailed flame structures of the counterflow flames of $CH_4/Air$ formed with $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ addition are studied numerically. The detailed chemical reactions are modeled by using the OPPDIF and CHEMKIN-II code. Only the $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ are assumed to participate in radiative heat transfer while all other gases are assumed to be transparent. The discrete ordinates method(DOM) and the narrow band based WSGGM with a gray gas regrouping technique(WSGGM-RG) are applied for modeling the radiative transfer through non-homogeneous and non-isothermal combustion gas mixtures generated by the counter flow flames. The results compared with the SNB model show that the WSGGM-RG is successful in modeling the counterflow flames with non-gray gas mixture. The numerical results show that the addition of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ to the oxidant nozzle lowers the peak temperature and the NO concentration in flame.

An experimental and numerical study on the three-dimensional natural convection-radiation conjugate heat transfer in the enclosure with heat generating chip has been performed. A 3-dimensional simulation model is developed by considering heat transfer phenomena by conduction-convection and radiation. Radiative transfer was analyzed with the discrete ordinates method. Experiments are conducted in order to validate the numerical model. Comparisons with the experimental data show that good agreement is obtained when the radiation effect is considered. The effects of the thermal conductivity of the substrate and power level on heat transfer are investigated. It is shown that radiation is the dominant heat transfer mode and the conductivity of the substrate has important effects on the heat transfer in the enclosure.
