  • This paper presents performance comparison of several high-resolution frequency estimation algorithms for pure real tone signal. Algorithms are DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform - for reference purpose), Jacobsen, Candan, reassignment and Cedron. Each algorithm is evaluated under various experimental conditions, e.g., different SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio), window function and window length and performance is compared in the perspective of bias, MSE (Mean Square-Error) and variance. Experimental results indicate that Cedron algorithms works well in the most cases. For actual usage in the engineering problem, each algorithm needs additional analysis and modification.

  • In this paper, we address a new fast DCT-II/DFT/HWT hybrid transform architecture for digital video and fusion mobile handsets based on Jacket-like sparse matrix decomposition. This fast hybrid architecture is consist of source coding standard as MPEG-4, JPEG 2000 and digital filtering discrete Fourier transform, and has two operations: one is block-wise inverse Jacket matrix (BIJM) for DCT-II, and the other is element-wise inverse Jacket matrix (EIJM) for DFT/HWT. They have similar recursive computational fashion, which mean all of them can be decomposed to Kronecker products of an identity Hadamard matrix and a successively lower order sparse matrix. Based on this trait, we can develop a single chip of fast hybrid algorithm architecture for intelligent mobile handsets.

  • This paper presents a new numerical algorithm suitable for defining recloser reclaims time and blocking automatic reclosing during permanent faults on overhead lines. It is based on terminal voltage input data processing. The decision if it is safe or not to reclose is determined from the voltage signal of faulted and tripped line phase using Total Harmonic Distortion factor calculated by Discrete Fourier Transform. The algorithm was successfully tested using signals recorded on the real power system. The tests demonstrate the ability of presented algorithm to determine the secondary arc extinction time and to block unsuccessful automatic reclosing of HV lines with permanent fault.

  • The roughness of Joomoonjin sand and the Dongchun river sand was analysed by the fractal theory. It was found that the fractal dimension(D$\_$F/) of Joomoonjin sand is a little smaller than the Dongchun river sand. That means Joomoonjin sand is smoother than the Dongchun river sand. The measurements of D$\_$F/ of different fraction of the Donchun river sand showed that large particles were rougher than fine particles. The shapes of both sands were analysed by the Discrete Fourier Transform(DFT) and the Grid-based(GB) method. Normalization of coefficients with respect to size, starting point and its orientation made the coefficients invaried to these characteristics. The mean of the normalized coefficients was used to reconstruct the average shape for both sands, respectively. The measurements of the ellipticity ratio of different fraction of both sands showed that Joomoonjin sand is slightly flatter than the Dongcun river sand.

  • The time-series normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) product has proven to be a powerful tool to investigate the phenological information because it can monitor the change of the forests with very high time-resolution, This study described the application of the DFT analysis over the 9 year MODIS data for the identification of the two types of vegetation cover, Pinus densiflora(Pd) and Querqus mongolica(Qm) which are dominant species of evergreen and broadleaved deciduous forest, respectively, The total number of samples was 5148 reference cycles which consist of 2160 Pd and 2988 Qm. They were extracted from the pixel-based MODIS scenes over the 9 years from 2000 to 2008 of South Korea. The DFT analysis was mainly focused on the 0th and $1^{st}$ harmonic components, each of which represents the mean value and the variation amplitude of the NDVI over the years, respectively. The $0^{th}$ harmonic values of the vegetation Pd and Qm averaged over the 9 years were 0.74 and 0.65, respectively. This implies that Pd has a higher NDVI than Qm. Similarly obtained $1^{st}$ harmonic values of Pd and Qm were 0.19 and 0.27, respectively. This can be intuitively understood considering that the seasonal variation of Qm is much larger than Pd. This distinctive difference of the $1^{st}$ harmonic value has been used to identify evergreen and deciduous forests. Overall agreement between the Fourier analysis-based map and the actal vegetation map has been estimated to be as high as 75%. This study found that the DFT analysis can be a concise and repeatable method to separate and trace the changes of evergreen and deciduous forest using the annual NDVI cycles.

  • The power system frequency plays an important role in monitoring and controlling the power system. The frequency can be measured through discrete Fourier transform (DFT) coefficients of its positive fundamental frequency. The accuracy of the frequency estimate is severely affected by noise in the power system signal and the leakage effect of the negative fundamental frequency in DFT. This paper proposes a DFT-based frequency estimation algorithm to cope with the noise as well as the leakage effect. In this algorithm, two suitable digital filters are introduced to reduce efficiently frequency estimate error due to the noise. These filters are designed to use a digital bandpass filter and a second-degree integrator. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in reduction of frequency estimate error is verified through simulations on noise, harmonics and frequency deviation.

  • In this paper, a receive diversity combining technique is proposed for single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA)-based cooperative relay systems when discrete Fourier transform (DFT) spreading sizes for mobile station (MS) and relay station (RS) are different. The proposed technique is composed of a DFT spreading size adjustment block, a phase rotation compensation block, a channel phase compensation block, and a receive diversity combining block. The proposed technique is robust to multipath channels and can be operated with a relatively small computational complexity because receive diversity combining is performed with scalar operations in the frequency-domain. It is shown by computer simulation that the proposed receive diversity combining techniques achieve a performance gain over the conventional maximal ratio combining (MRC) techniques for SC-FDMA-based cooperative relay systems.

  • Terabit-per-second (Tb/s) transmission capacity for the next generation of long-haul communication networks can be achieved using multicarrier optical super-channel technology. In an elastic orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) super-channel transmission system, demultiplexing a portion of an entire spectrum in the form of a subband with minimum power is critically required. A major obstacle to achieving this goal is the analog-to-digital converter (ADC), which is power-hungry and extremely expensive. Without a proper ADC that can work with low power, it is unrealistic to design a 100G coherent receiver suitable for a commercially deployable optical network. Discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is often seen as a primary technique for understanding partial demultiplexing, which can be attained either optically or electronically. If fairly comparable performance can be achieved with an all-optical DFT circuit, then a solution independent of data rate and modulation format can be obtained. In this paper, we investigate two distinct OFDM super-channel receiver models, based on electronic and all-optical DFT-technologies, for partial carrier demultiplexing in a multi-Tb/s transmission system. The performance comparison of the receivers is discussed in terms of bit-error-rate (BER) performance.

  • In 2013, a total capacity of 591.3 MW of installed wind power generation was achieved in Korea, with a total of 1,139 MWh of wind energy generated that year. More wind power plants will be installed in the coming years, and it is important to develop methods to reduce the output variability of these resources so as to provide stable power to the power grid of Korea. In this regard, this paper proposes the use of energy storage system (ESS) as a means to stabilize the output variability of wind power plants. Presented in this paper is a method that uses Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) to determine the ESS capacity needed to provide a stable power output for ancillary services such as frequency regulation, economic dispatch, and emergency reserves. In the first step of the proposed method, four regions (namely, Samdal, Yeongdeok, Yeongyang, and Gangwon) in Korea that had the most wind power generation capacity were selected for analysis. In the second step, the individual and aggregated wind power outputs of the selected regions in 2013 were obtained This information was then used in the third step, where DFT analysis of the power outputs was used to drive the magnitudes of the output variation. And finally, the ESS capacity requirements needed to provide different ancillary services were determined based on the magnitudes of the output variation.

  • Single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) is currently being used in long-term evolution uplink communications owing to its low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This study proposes a new transceiver design for an SC-FDMA system based on Walsh-Hadamard transform (WHT). The proposed WHT-based SC-FDMA system has low-PAPR and better bit-error rate (BER) performance compared with the conventional SC-FDMA system. The WHT-based SC-FDMA transmitter has the same complexity as that of discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based transmitter, while the receiver's complexity is higher than that of the DFT-based receiver. The exponential companding technique is used to reduce its PAPR without degrading its BER. Moreover, the performances of different ordered WHT systems have been studied in additive white Gaussian noise and multipath fading environments. The proposed system has been verified experimentally by considering a real-time channel with the help of wireless open-access research platform hardware. The supremacy of the proposed transceiver is demonstrated based on simulated and experimental results.
