  • In this paper, electrical discharge machined (EDM) surfaces machined with various machining parameters are characterized and simulated. Three-dimensional surface topography of EDM surfaces are measured by a stylus instrument. Surface topography is characterized with auto-correlation coefficient and height probability density functions. Then, EDM surfaces are modeled and computer-simulated by using the non-causal 2-D auto-regressive model. Simulation results show that EDM surfaces are characterized well by a few parameters.

  • From the experimental study of wire-cut Electric Discharge Machining for alloyed steel and tungsten carbide, the characteristics such as hand drum form has been observed and evaluated for various conditions. Hand drum form can be improved when gap voltage and spark cycle become smaller, their thickness become thinner, wire tension become larger and number of cutting is done so many times. When wire-cut 60mm thickness tungsten carbide in normal condition, Hand drum form becomes larger due to the low conductivity inducing cobalt composite rising by electrolysis.

  • This paper works on the manufacture and performance evaluation of bi-polar power supplied diesinking electrical discharge machine. The design and implementation of diesinking electrical discharge machine consists of two parts which are a polarity voltage controller design and a servo motor controller design and they are verified and manufactured through simulation. The performance of the implemented machine and conventional one were evaluated by comparing its machining speed and roughness of machined surface. Eventually, the designed machine showed improved performance in the speed and the roughness.

  • Graphene nanoplatelet (GNP)-reinforced alumina ($Al_2O_3$) is a promising material for micro-partapplications, particularly micro-nozzle shapes, because of its excellent wearresistance. In this study, a $Al_2O_3$/GNPcomposite with 15 vol% graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) was highly densified and fabricated via spark plasma sintering for micro-electrical discharge drilling (Micro-ED drilling) and the wear resistance property of the composite is evaluated via the ball-on-disk method. In addition, the diameter and shape of the micro-electrodes machined by wire electrical discharge grinding (WEDG), block electrical discharge grinding (BEDG), and new linear block moving electrical discharge grinding (LBMEDG) methods are systematically compared and analyzed to observe the micro-hole machining in the micro-ED drilling of the $Al_2O_3$/15vol% GNP composite.

  • Since polycrystalline diamond (PCD) has high hardness like diamond, it has been used as tool material for lathe and milling of non-ferrite material. A micro tool fabricated from PCD material can be used for micro machining of hard material such as tungsten carbide, glass, and ceramics. In this paper, micro PCD tools were fabricated by micro EDM (electrical discharge machining) and used for micro grinding of glass. Craters generated on the tool surface by EDM spark work as like grits in grinding process. The effects of tool shapes, tool roughness and PCD grain size were investigated. Also studied was a hybrid process combining electrochemical discharge machining (ECDM) and micro grinding for micro-structuring of glass.

  • To construct machining databases, which are reusable and sharable their meanings, semantic metadata management is required. In this study a semantic data modeling process for machining data is developed. It combines conventional data models with ISO/IEC 11179 standard, metadata registry(MDR). Names of object classes and properties constituting data element names are identified using conventional data model while data elements are named and specified based on ISO/IEC 11179 in order to obtain semantic interoperability of data. An experimental application to electrical discharge machining(EDM) is performed to explain the process.

  • Aluminum Oxide($Al_2O_3$) ceramics are excellent candidates for such applications due to their outstanding mechanical, thermal, and tribological properties. However, they are difficult to machine using conventional mechanical methods. Carbon fillers, such as carbon nanotubes(CNT) and graphene nanoplatelets(GNP)can be dispersed in a ceramic matrix to improve the mechanical and electrical properties. In this study, CNT and Graphene reinforced hybrid ceramic composites were fabricated using the spark plasma sintering method at a temperature of $1,500^{\circ}C$, pressure of 40 MPa, and soaking time of 10min. Besides this, the material properties such as microstructure, crystal structure, hardness, and electrical conductivity were analyzed using FE-SEM, XRD, Vickers, and the 4-point probe method. A micro machining test was carried out to compare the effects of the material properties and the machining performance for CNT and Graphene reinforced ceramic composites.

  • This paper describes the machining characteristics of the MoSi$_2$--based composites through the process of electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes. In addition to hardness characteristics, microstructures of Nb/MoSi$_2$laminate composites were evaluated from the variation of fabricating conditions, such as preparation temperature, applied pressure, and pressure holding time. MoSi$_2$-based composites have been developed in new materials for jet engines of supersonic-speed airplanes and gas turbines for high-temperature generators. These high performance engines may require new hard materials with high strength and high temperature-resistance. Also, with the exception of grinding, traditional machining methods are not applicable to these new materials. Electric discharge machining (EDM) is a thermal process that utilizes a spark discharge to melt a conductive material. The tool electrode is almost -unloaded, because there is n direct contact between the tool electrode and the work piece. By combining a non-conducting ceramic with more conducting ceramic, it was possible to raise the electrical conductivity. From experimental results, it was found that the lamination from Nb sheet and MoSi$_2$ powder was an excellent strategy to improve hardness characteristics of monolithic MoSi$_2$. However, interfacial reaction products, like (Nb, Mo)SiO$_2$and Nb$_2$Si$_3$formed at the interface of Nb/MoSi$_2$, and increased with fabricating temperature. MoSi$_2$composites, with which a hole drilling was not possible through the conventional machining process, enhanced the capacity of ED-drilling by adding MbSi$_2$, relative to that of SiC or ZrO$_2$reinforcements.
