  • Recent developments recommend the use of SSS to prevent combined sewer overflows and reduce excessive pollutant deposition in the receiving waters; however, other studies also suggest that SSS have minimal or no advantage over CSS in terms of reducing the pollutant loads being discharged in natural waterways. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of employing SSS in improving the water quality of the rivers in Okcheon-gun, South Korea. The former combined sewer outfalls (CSOs) were monitored to determine the presence of illicit connections or leaks in the newly-established SSS. Dry and wet-day monitoring was conducted alongside the collection of water samples on 14 points along the reach of the rivers and four former CSOs to determine water quality changes and patterns of pollutant loading. Among the 34 former CSOs in the study area, eight former CSOs exhibited dry-day discharges, implying the possibility of having illicit connections, leaks, or illegal wastewater discharge in the system. Moreover, relatively high biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations, ranging from 4.8 mg/L to 24.9 mg/L and 6.4 mg/L to 10.1 mg/L, respectively were observed on three out of the four monitored CSOs. Fluctuations in the pollutant concentrations in the different monitored points along the river was also observed due to the presence of pipes discharging polluted water. Ultimately, further studies are necessary to identify the sources of dry-day discharges in the CSOs to successfully improve the water quality of the rivers in the area.

  • PAHs(Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) in coastal area and estuary adjacent to urban area and industrial activities region are mainly introduced into marine environment via atmosphere and river. This study which is evaluated the distribution characteristics of PAHs discharge from rivers and sewage disposal water which flowing into Ulsan bay, and were carried out in Jun of dry season and in Auguest of wet season, 2008. The water samples from eight main rivers and Youngyeon WWTP(Wastewater Treatment Plant) flowed into Ulsan bay were taken for analysis of dissolved PAHs. The range and mean values of dissolved PAHs concentrations showed 10.30 to 87.88 ng/L, its mean 36.94 ng/L in dry season and 10.30 to 69.57 ng/L, its mean 24.37 ng/L in wet season. The distribution of dissolved PAHs showd the high concentrations in the Gungcheoncheon which is flowed from urban and industrial area. The ranges and means values of the loading fluxes were estimated with 0.04 to 8.27 g/day, its mean 2.05 g/day in dry season, and 0.03 to 4.77 g/day, its mean 1.61 g/day, in wet season. The loading flux showed the highest value in Taewha river due to the high flow rate and the urban activity. The composition patterns of dissolved PAHs compound showed most of the trend occupying low molecuar weight PAHs than high molecular weight PAHs. These results were due to physical and chemical characteristics of PAHs compound, and were similar to those of other studies. The concentrations of dissolved PAHs in this study are lower than those of other studies, and the level of PAHs pollution appeared to be not serious in reverine waters of Ulsan coast.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide a design and operation technical guideline for meeting the appropriate design criteria to bio-gasification facilities treating organic wastes. Based on the results obtained during the field surveys, the overall design and operation guidelines for bio-gasification facilities, monitoring items, cycle and commissioning period were presented. According to the flow of anaerobic digestion process, Various design factors for bio-gasification facilities were proposed in this study. When designing the initial anaerobic digestion capacity, 10 ~ 30% of the treatment capacity was applied considering the discharge characteristics by the incoming organic wastes. At the import storage hopper process, limit concentration of transporting organic wastes was limited to TS 10 % or less, and limit concentration of inhibiting factor was suggested in operation of anaerobic digester. In addition, organic loading rate (OLR) was shown as $1.5{\sim}4.0kgVS_{in}/(m^3{\cdot}day)$ for the combined bio-gasification facilities of animal manure and food wastes. Desulfurization and dehumidification methods of biogas from anaerobic digestor and proper periods of liquifization tank were suggested in design guideline. It is recommended that the operating parameters of the biogasification facilities to be maintained at pH (acid fermentation tank 4.5~6.5, methane fermentation tank 6.0~8.0), temperature variation range within $2^{\circ}C$, management of volatile fatty acid and ammonia concentration less than 3,000 mg/L, respectively.

  • This study analyzes water quality change trends in three major rivers in Daejeon and effect of discharge from Daejeon Wastewater Treatment Plant between 1992 and 2014. As of 2014, COD concentration in the Gab-cheon-A station is in level VI for Korea river water quality standard while BOD and TP are in level III. As expansions of the treatment plant, water quality in the Gab-cheon River has been improving accordingly. However, during the study period, TN concentrations of the headwater and the most downstream locations of the Gab-cheon River have increased about twice and three times, respectively. It was estimated that the treatment plant is responsible for 35%. 46%, 76% and 63% of BOD, COD, TN and TP loadings of the Gab-cheon River, respectively. It was also estimated that small tributaries and nonpoint sources are responsible for 54% and 47% of BOD and COD loadings of the Gab-cheon River. Therefore, it is recommended to further reduce nutrient loadings from the treatment plant and also reduce surface runoff organic loading from nonpoint sources including small tributaries and storm sewers.

  • This paper presents an automated cow-feeding system based on an AGV and screw conveyor for domestic livestock farms, which are becoming larger and more commercialized. The system includes a hopper module for loading pellet-type mixed feed at the top of the system, a transfer module mounted with a screw conveyor to transfer feed from the hopper module to the outlet module, an outlet module composed of belt conveyors, and an electromagnetic guided driving-type AGV. The weight of the loaded feed is measured by a load cell located under the transfer module. The system reads the feed discharge information stored in RFID tags installed in each cowshed cell, and a predetermined amount of feed is discharged while the AGV is moving. A cow-feed test system was constructed to determine the design parameters of the screw conveyor in the transfer module that determine the feeding capacity. These parameters include the screw's outer diameter, the screw shaft outer diameter, and screw pitch. The parameters were applied to the finalized cow-feed system construction. A DSP-based main controller and cow-feeding algorithm for different scenarios were also developed to control the system. Experimental results confirmed that the system could supply a total of 21 kg of feed uniformly at 420 g/s for a cowshed cell which has 7 cows. The driving distance was 5 m and the speed was 0.1 m/s. Thus, the proposed system could be applied to standardized domestic livestock farms.

  • Biodegradation of the reactive dye, Remazol Black B was investigated in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket(UASB) reactor. Important parameters studied include dye concentration(20-60 mg/L), glucose concentration as a co-substrate(1,000-3,000 mg/L), hydraulic retention time(3-24 hr), and influent pH(6.0-8.0). Under most conditions tested, the molecules of Black B were degraded readily and completely according to HPLC chromatograms. However, the color removal efficiency based on spectroscopic measurement was always approximately 75%. This suggests that the degradation products have some color intensity corresponding to 25% of the original dye molecules. The maximum influent dye concentration which satisfies the legal discharge limit of color intensity of 400 ADMI was 13 mg/L. and the highest removal rate at this dye concentration was 104 mg/L${\cdot}$day.

  • Water pollution characteristics were investigated in the Kyongan stream and major inlet parts of Paltang Reservoir from April to July, 2000. Water quality in the Kyongan stream was extremly deteriorated by treated wastewater discharge at near sewage wastewater treatment plant (SWTP) located in the upstream, and it is likely to influence eutrophication of the lower part of the stream. Water quality of the Kyongan stream showed a typical hypertrophic condition. Influxed concentrations with $NH_4$ and SRP into the main stream from SWTP were declined precipitously as water flowed toward the lower part of the stream, and chlorophyll- a explosively increased in the midstream. Average concentrations of $NH_4$, SRP and chlorophyll-a in the main stream were $1,343\;{\mu}g\;N/l$, $1,779\;{\mu}g\;P/l$ and $188\;{\mu}g\;l$, respectively. Particularly, phosphorus load was very high, and its influence on the algal growth stimulation was remarkable. In comparison with the water quality inflowing into Paltang Resevoir, pollution status of the Kyongan stream was more worse than that in the Pukhan River and the Namhan River. The results of this study indicate that the management of point source, SWTP effluent, is urgent to mitigate eutrophication of Paltang Reservoir, and requires further necessary controls of inorganic phosphorus loading.

  • Changes in the benthic communities have been studied to investigate the environmental effects before and after the construction of Shihwa Dike in the West coast of Korea. It is suggested that sequential changes in macrofaunal assemblages progressed in two sucressional directions. In the Shihwa lake under the influence of organic enrichment. First, the appearance of 'azoic tone' or 'grossly polluted zone' developed in the area of less than 6 m in depth resulted from the severe dissolved oxygen depletion due to the eutrophication from the increased organic loading. Second, the 'polluted zone' characterized by the proliferation of the opportunistic species in organically enriched area, was found in the vicinity of the industrial discharges and nearby fluvial inputs. This benthic community succession in the Shihwa lake seemed to be caused by the various ecological events such as an eutrophication in this organically enriched environment after construction of the dike and other physico-chemical parameters like salinity and dissolved oxygen in the bottom water, which may be influenced by the irregular surface water discharge and dilution by outer seawater inflow through the water gate of the dike. On the other hand, the benthic communities in the outside of the dike showed that the species richness was more than doubled and the abundance increased almost seven times more than that before the dike construction. This may be a typical characteristics of the initial phase in benthic eutrophication, suggesting that an increased organic input area may have been reponsible for this faunal change in the study area.

  • In order to find out the short-term phytoplankton dynamics during summer season in Jinhae Bay, we investigated the environmental factors and phytoplankton population densities at 16 stations. A total of 66 phytoplankton species were appeared, diatoms occupied more than 80% of total species, and the others were dinoflagellates and raphidophyceaes. The dominant species were diatoms Chaetoceros affinis, C. didymus, C. pseudocurvisetus, Leptocylindrus danicus, Pseudonitzchia pungens, Skeletonema costatum and dinoflagellates Cochlodinium polykrikoides, Gymnodinium impudicum, Karenia mikimotoi, Prorocentrium minimum, Protoperidinium bipes and Scrippsiella trochoidea. According to multidimensional scaling (MSD) and cluster analysis based on phytoplankton community data from each station, the Jinhae bay was divided into two groups. The first group included stations in the inner part of Masan Bay, which is strongly influenced by high nitrogen loading and low salinity by river discharge. The second group included the other remained stations. Based on canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), small-size dinoflagellates K. mikimotoi, P. minimum, P. bipes and S. trochoidea and centric diatom C. pseudocurvisetus and S. costatum, which is dominanted in the inner area of bay, were related with DIN (ammonium, nitrate, nitrite). These results imply that the study area was grouped into the two water masses (inner and outer water of Masan Bay) and inner waters had higher phytoplankton abundances and Chl.a concentration than outer waters. As a result, summer phytoplankton peaks in the inner shallow bay were stimulated by increases in nitrogen and temperature.
