  • A morphological filtering algorithm using directional information is presented. Directional filtering technique is effective in reducing noises and preserving edges. The proposed directional filtering is composed of two stage filtering processes. The opening and closing operations in the lst stage are performed for the pixels is aligned to the vertical, horizontal, and two diagonal directions, respectively. The opening operation supresses the positive impulse noises, while the closing operation the negative ones. Then, each directional result and their average value are filtered by the opening or closing operations in the 2nd stage. The averaging operation diminishes the effects of Gaussian noises in the homogeneous regions. Thus, the morphological operation in the 1 st stageremoves the impulse noises and in 2nd stage reduces. Gaussian ones. The experimental results show that the proposed filtering is superior to the existing nonlinear filtering in the aspects of the subjective quality. Also, the morphological filtering method reduces the computational loads.

  • The speech intelligibility is one of the most important factors in communication system. The speech intelligibility is related with speech to noise ratio. To enhance the speech to noise ratio, background noise reduction techniques are being developed. As a part of solution to noise reduction, this paper introduces directional microphone using beamforming method and speech filtering method. The directional microphone narrows the spatial range of processing signal into the direction of the target speech signal. The noise signal located in the same direction with speech still remains in the processing signal. To sort this mixed signal into speech and noise, as a following step, a speech-filtering method is applied to pick up only the speech signal from the processed signal. The speech filtering method is based on the characteristics of speech signal itself. The combined directional microphone and speech filtering method gives enhanced performance to speech intelligibility in communication system.

  • In this paper we present a generalized directional morphological filtering algorithm for the removal of impulse noise, which is based on a combination of impulse noise detection and a weighted rank-order morphological filtering technique. For salt (or pepper) noise suppression, the generalized directional opening (or closing) filtering of the input signal is selectively used. The detection of impulse noise can be done by the geometrical difference of opening and closing filtering. Simulations show that this new filter has better detail feature preservation with effective noise reduction compared to other nonlinear filtering techniques.

  • In many multimedia applications, image compression is required to substantially reduce the amount of image data. This compression, however, sometimes brings artifacts. Typical artifacts are blocking artifacts and mosquito noise in DCT-coded images, and ringing artifacts around edges in wavelet-coded images. We propose a new directional postprocessing algorithm, which includes detection of the edge direction, interpolation scheme, and directional nonlinear filtering, to enhance the quality of decoded images. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is as effective as or more effective than other nonlinear filtering techniques.

  • As an effective weapon system for anti-submarine warfare, DIrectional Frequency Analysis and Recording (DIFAR) sonobuoy detects underwater targets via beamforming with three channels composed of an omni-direcitonal and two directional channels. However, ambient noise degrades the detection performance of DIFAR sonobouy in specific direction (0°, 90°, 180°, 270°). Thus, an ambient noise redcution technique is proposed for performance improvement of acoustic target detection of DIFAR sonobuoy. The proposed method is based on OTA (Order Truncate Average), which is widely used in sonar signal processing area, for ambient noise estimation and Wiener filtering, which is widely used in speech signal processing area, for noise reduction. For evaluation, we compare mean square errors of target bearing estmation results of conventional and proposed methods and we confirmed that the proposed method is effective under 0 dB signal-to-noise ratio.

  • This paper presents an effective demosaicking algorithm for color filter array (CFA) images acquired from single-sensor devices based on directional interpolation and nonlocal properties of the image. We interpolate the G channel considering diagonal directions as well as horizontal and vertical directions, using a small number of pixels to reflect local properties of the image. Then, we overcome image degradations, such as zipper effects near edges and false colors, by applying nonlocal means (NLM) filtering to the interpolated pixels. R and B channels are reproduced by using directional interpolation with information of the reconstructed G channel and NLM filtering. Experimental results for various McMaster images with high saturation and color changes show that the proposed algorithm accomplishes high PSNR compared with conventional methods. Moreover, the proposed method demonstrates better subjective quality compared with existing methods in terms of reduction of quality degradation, like false colors, and preservation of the image structures, such as edges and textures.

  • The study on shilla monumental inscription has been accomplished by many historians. However, the research on segmentation of monumental inscription image using digital image processing technique is not sufficient. The preprocessing using computer is needed for accurate interpretation of history. In this paper, A morphological filtering using directional information is presented. Directional filtering is effective in reducing noises and preserving edges. The opening and closing operations in the 1st stage are performed for the pixel is aligned to the vertical, horizontal and two diagonal directions. The Opening operation supresses the positive impulse noise while the closing operation the negative ones. Then Directional filter and post-processing are applied to the image. Experimental result shows outstanding performance for interpretation.

  • In this paper, we propose a real time post-processing visual enhancement technique to reduce the blocking artifacts in block based DCT decoded image for mobile devices that have allocation of the restricted resource. In order to reduce the blocking artifacts effectively even while preserving the image edge to the utmost, the proposed algorithm uses the deblocking filtering or the directional filtering according to the edge detection of the each pixel. After it is discriminated that the pixel to apply the deblocking filtering belongs again to the monotonous area, the weighted average filter with the adaptive mask is applied for the pixel to remove the blocking artifacts. On the other hand, a new directional filter is utilized to get rid of staircase noise and preserve the original edge component. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm produces better results than those of the conventional algorithms in both subjective and objective qualities.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm of fingerprint image analysis and processing using directional filter bank(DFB). The directional components of ridge is very important in pre-processing steps of fingerprint image processing such as image enhancement by directional filtering followed by estimationg the directional image of ridge patterns. The DFB analyzes input image into directional subband images and synthesizes them to the perfectly reconstructed image. In this paper, a new fingerprint processing algorithm using the DFB is proposed. The algorithm decomposes the fingerprint image into directional subband images and performs directional map generation, foreground segmentation, singular points extraction and image enhancement based on local directional energy estimate.

  • In this paper, statistical properties of the spatiotemporal center weighted median(CWM) filter for image sequences are investigated. It is statistically shown that the CWM filter preserves image structures under motion at the expense of noise suppression. To improve the CWM filter, a filter which can be effectively used in image sequence processing, the adaptive directional center weighted median filter (ADCWM), is proposed. This filter utilizes a multistage filtering structure based on adaptive symmetric order statistic(ASOS) operators which produce a pall of order statistics symmetric about the median. The ASOS's are selected by using adaptive parameters adjusted by local image statistics. It is shown experimentally that the proposed filter can preserve image structures while attenuating noise without the use of motion estimation.
