  • In this paper, we consider the scheduling of SE(switching element)-disjoint multicasting in photonic Banyan-type switching networks constructed with directional couplers. This ensures that at most, one connection holds each SE in a given time thus, neither crosstalk nor blocking will arise in the network. Such multicasting usually takes several routing rounds hence, it is desirable to keep the number of rounds(i.e., scheduling length) to a minimum. We first present the necessary and sufficient condition for connections to pass through a common SE(i.e., make crosstalk) in the photonic Banyan-type networks capable of supporting one-to-many connections. With definition of uniquely splitting a multicast connection into distinct subconnections, the crosstalk relationship of a set of connections is represented by a graph model. In order to analyze the worst case crosstalk we characterize the upper bound on the degree of the graph. The successor paper(Part II)[14] is devoted to the scheduling algorithm and the upper bound on the scheduling length. Comparison with related results is made in detail.

  • This paper presents average numerical results of 2128 nonlinear dynamic finite element (FE) analyses of lightweight acceleration-sensitive non-structural components (NSCs) attached to the floors of one-bay three-storey reinforced concrete (RC) primary structures (P-structures) with different eccentricity ratios. The investigated parameters include the NSC to P-structure vibration period ratio, peak ground acceleration, P-structure eccentricity ratio, and NSC damping ratio. Appropriate constitutive relationships were used to model the behaviour of the RC P-structures. The NSCs were modelled as vertical cantilevers fixed at their bases with masses on the free ends and varying lengths so as to match the vibration periods of the P-structures. Full dynamic interaction was considered between the NSCs and P-structures. A set of seven natural bi-directional ground motions were used to evaluate the seismic response of the NSCs. The numerical results show that the acceleration response of the NSCs depends on the investigated parameters. The accelerations of the NSCs attached to the flexible sides of the P-structures increased with the increase in peak ground acceleration and P-structure eccentricity ratio but decreased with the increase in NSC damping ratio. Comparison between the FE results and Eurocode 8 (EC8) predictions suggests that, under tuned conditions, EC8 provisions underestimate the seismic response of the NSCs mounted on the flexible sides of the plan-irregular RC P-structures.

  • The stress condition mainly dominates the thermal conductivity of soils whereas governing factors such as unit weight and porosity suggested by empirical correlations are still valid. The 3D thermal network model enables evaluation of the stress-dependent thermal conductivity of particulate materials generated by discrete element method (DEM). The relationship among dominant factors is analyzed based on the coordination number and porosity determined by stress condition and thermal conductivity of pore fluid. Results show that the variation of thermal conductivity is strongly attributed to the enlargement of inter-particle contact area by loading history and pore fluid conductivity. This study highlights that the anisotropic evolution of thermal conductivity depends on the directional load and that the particle-scale mechanism mainly dictates the heat transfer in soils.

  • A constitutive model unifying plasticity and crack damage mode)s was developed to address the cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete planar members. The stress of concrete in tension-compression was conceptually defined by the sum of the compressive stress developed by the strut-action of concrete and the tensile stresses developed by tensile cracking. The plasticity model with multiple failure criteria was used to describe the isotropic damage of compressive crushing affected by the anisotropic damage of tensile cracking. The concepts of the multiple fixed crack damage model and the plastic flow model of tensile cracking were used to describe the tensile stress-strain relationship of multi-directional cracks. This unified model can describe the behavioral characteristics of reinforced concrete in cyclic tension-compression conditions, i.e. multiple tensile crack orientations, progressively rotating crack damage, and compressive crushing of concrete. The proposed constitutive model was implemented to finite element analysis, and it was verified by comparison with existing experimental results from reinforced concrete shear panels and walls under cyclic load conditions.

  • This paper proposes a uni-planar elliptical element UWB antenna with band-notched characteristic and modified pound plane fed by CPW. The antenna achieves VSWR below 2 for UWB band(3.1 GHz${\~}$10.6 GHz). In addition, a band-notched characteristic is achieved by inserting a horizontal slot on the radiation element to avoid the interference with 5 GHz(5.15 GHz${\~}$5.825 GHz) band limited by IEEE 802.1la. The antenna has a thin profile, compact size, and ease of manufacture by adopting a CPW feed structure without any additional background plane. Measured data show that the proposed antenna has good return loss below -10 dB, about 2.1 dB${\~}$4.75 dB maximum gain over the bandwidth, omni-directional radiation patterns, linear phase response.

  • In this study, a new design method is developed to optimize the structure of an underwater sparse array sensor. The purpose of this research is to design the structure of a sparse array that has the performance equivalent to a fully sampled array. The directional factor of a sparse planar array is derived as a function of the structural parameters of the array. With the derived equation, the structure of the sparse array sensor is designed to have the performance equivalent to that of the fully array sensor through structural optimization of the number and location of transmitting and receiving elements in the array. The designed sparse array sensor shows beam patterns very close to those of the fully array sensor in terms of PSLL (Peak Side Lobe Level) and MLBW (Main Lobe Beam Width), which confirms the effectiveness of the present optimal design method. Further, the validity of the analytic beam patterns is verified by comparing them with those from the FEA (Finite Element Analysis) of the optimized sparse array structure.

  • In the case of the railway bridges, uplift forces were occurred at the edge of the segments when vehicular loads were applied. These forces caused the compressive and tensile forces in the fastening system. In the past, a structural analysis has been performed to investigate the safety of fastening system which was modeled with one directional spring elements based on the compressive test of fastening system. In this case, the stiffness of the spring element was obtained from experimental study which was conducted by compressive load. Therefore, to perform rational and exact structural analysis, the translational stiffness of the fastening system obtained from the experimental study applied the tensile load and the rotational stiffness should be considered because it was occurred the tensile force as well as the compressive force in fastening system. In this study, an elastic and inelastic experimental study was performed for six specimens. The translational stiffness along the vertical axis of rail and the rotational stiffness along the strong axis of rail were investigated, also structural behavior of the fastening system was analyzed.

  • A newmethod of fast mask operators for edge detection is proposed, which is based on the matrix factorization. The output of each component in the multi-directional mask operator is obtained adding every image pixels in the mask area weighting by corresponding mask element. Therefore, it is same as the result of matrix-vector multiplication like one dimensional transform, i, e, , trasnform of an image vector surrounded by mask with a transform matrix consisted of all the elements of eack mask row by row. In this paper, for the Sobel and Prewitt operators, we find the transform matrices, add up the number of operations factoring these matrices and compare the performances of the proposed method and the standard method. As a result, the number of operations with the proposed method, for Sobel and prewitt operators, without any extra storage element, are reduced by 42.85% and 50% of the standard operations, respectively and in case of an image having 100x100 pixels, the proposed Sobel operator with 301 extra storage locations can be computed by 35.93% of the standard method.

  • In this paper, an antenna which has dipole-like radiation pattern and low profile is proposed. The antenna is composed of four elements slot array based on L-shaped 0.43 $\lambda_g$ slot element. It presents a omni-directional radiation patter in the azimuth plane and has a null toward broad-side direction. In the design, a small mono-pole antenna which acts as a large capacitance element, combined with the partially removed ground plane by four L-shaped slots. As a result, these structure act as a LC resonator for radiation. The measured result shows, the impedance bandwidth(VSWR$\leq$2) of the proposed antenna is 60 MHz(2.35$\sim$2.41 GHz). The measured maximum radiation gain and efficiency of proposed antenna is 0.02 dBi, 56.7 % at center frequency 2.38 GHz, respectively. The proposed antenna can be applied to wireless tan access point system.

  • Since the velocity is dependent on the fiber orientation in anisotropic composites, the application of traditional acoustic emission (AE) source location techniques based on the constant velocity to composite structures has been practically impossible. The anisotropy makes the source location procedure complicated and deteriorates the accuracy of the location. In this study, we have divided the region of interest(ROI) into a set of finite elements, taken each element as a virtual source, and calculated the arrival time differences between sensors by using the velocities at every degree from 0 to 90. The calculated and the experimentally measured values of the arrival time difference aye then compared to minimize the location error. The results from two different materials, namely AA6061-T6 and CFRP(uni-directional; UD, $[0]_{32}4$) laminate confirmed the practical usefulness of the proposed method.
