Analyzing the situation of directional signs in the High-speed Railway Stations and the method to standardize them (고속철도역 안내표지판의 특성 분석 및 표준화 방안)

  • The Directional sign system in Korean high speed railway stations has a lot of problems. For an example, It lacks of consistency in the shape or allocation. Also, the signs do not match with the actual directions sometimes. Last but not least, the view is blocked by the other signs such as advertisement or other barriers. We suggested the methods to standardize the sign systems that include visibility, accuracy, consistency, and simplicity. First, we categorized signs into directional signs, locational signs, and informational signs. Then, we examined the actual high speed railway stations in Korea to learn the real situation. Finally, we suggested the methods to standardize the sign systems considering the factors that are visibility, accuracy, consistency, and simplicity.

  • Large sized buildings have proliferated in the modern world in order to solve problems caused by the growth of cities, and this trend has lead to diversity in style and utilization of interiors. In particular, wayfinding within the shopping mall for a customer is a common problem, so if customers do not have to face these navigational problems and could find the way more easily, then shopping mall or the store can expect much better profits. Therefore, directional sign system that can provide accurate and speedy information for customers with diversified ages, gender and knowledge is necessary. Firstly, the definition and element of all directional sign are analyzed through the existing literature survey. The elements are based on the practical elements and six categories such as type, pictogram, color, layout, form, and location were considered. Secondly, directional signs in large underground shopping mall was considered, and the speciality of the underground shopping mall was investigated, and finally top three underground shopping malls was analyzed. Thirdly, through the questionnaire, an objective appraisal of directional signs and problems was developed, and following possible improvement was suggested. This study has its own limitations since it is only applicable to the specific locations, however, directional designs will be useful in other types of buildings as well. Through the continuous studies of the users' psychology, these kinds of studies will be related to the environmental characteristics of various places.

  • At public spaces, signs have purposes of communicating their information clearly. Especially directional signs point out the proper route showing our surroundings. The present directional signs which are indicating 3-dimensional direction in a 2-dimensional mode seem to be difficult to understand as we are moving. This study has the purpose of investigating the role of present signs and suggesting visually effective directional signs, in particular arrows. Firstly, this study surveyed the user's attitude on directional signs in case of subway station. The research shows that the present directional signs hardly perform their roles to communicate the directional information, which means the need of newly expressed arrows. In this study we consider a new effective expression on the viewpoint of human cognition mechanism. So it is thought that those trials are helpful to efficient sign system.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the case and process of the application of the sign system in order to enable the user to reach the target site more efficiently in the library. For this purpose, a new sign system was applied to the S University library through procedures such as library structure, sign status, user observation, cyan production and preference survey. Detailed production process and user's reaction were identified. Based on this we suggested improvements to the library stacks signage system.

  • Because of road construction and expansion, Update of the road traffic facilities DB is steadily increased each year, and, Increasing drivers and cars, safety signs for traffic safety are required management and additional installation continuously. To update Safety Sign database promptly, we have developed auto recognition function of safety sign, and analyzed coordinates accuracy. The purpose of this study was to propose methods to update about road traffic facilities efficiently. For this purpose, omni-directional camera was calibrated for acquisition of 3-dimensional coordinates, integrated GPS/IMU/DMI system and applied image processing. In this experiment, we proposed a effective method to update database of road traffic facilities for digital map.
