  • For efficient massive image retrieval, an image retrieval requires that several important objectives are satisfied, namely: automated extraction of features, efficient indexing and effective retrieval. In this work, we present a technique for extracting the 4-dimension directional feature. By directional detail, we imply strong directional activity in the horizontal, vertical and diagonal direction present in region of the image texture. This directional information also present smoothness of region. The 4-dimension feature is only indexed in the 4-D space so that complex high-dimensional indexing can be avoided.

  • Directional sensor networks (DSNs) can significantly improve the performance of a network by employing energy efficient communication protocols. Neighbor discovery is a vital part of medium access control (MAC) and routing protocol, which influences the establishment of communication between neighboring nodes. Neighbor discovery is a challenging task in DSNs due to the limited coverage provided by directional antennas. Furthermore, in these networks, communication can only take place when the beams of the directional antennas are pointed toward each other. In this article, we propose a novel multiple token-based neighbor discovery (MuND) protocol, in which multiple tokens are transmitted based on an area exploration algorithm. The performance of the protocol is evaluated using the Cooja simulator. The simulation results reveal that the proposed MuND protocol achieves lower neighbor discovery latency, with a 100% neighbor discovery ratio, and has a relatively low communication overhead and low energy consumption.

  • In the H.264/ AVC video coding standard, the intra-prediction coding with various block sizes offers a considerably high improvement in coding efficiency compared to previous standards. In order to achieve this, H.264/AVC uses the Rate-distortion optimization (RDO) technique to select the best intraprediction mode for a macroblock, and it brings about the drastic increase of the computation complexity of H.264 encoder. To reduce the computation complexity and stabilize the coding performance on visual quality, this paper proposed a fast intra-prediction mode decision algorithm using non-parametric thresholds and simplified directional masks. The use of nonparametric thresholds makes the intra-coding performance not be dependent on types of video sequences and simplified directional masks reduces the compuation loads needed by the calculation of local edge information. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm is able to reduce more than 55% of the whole encoding time with a negligible loss in PSNR and bitrates and provides the stable performance regardless types of video sequences.

  • This paper shows the calculation of 3D geometric information such as height, direction and distance under the constraints of a catadioptric camera system. The catadioptric camera system satisfies the single viewpoint constraints adopting hyperboloidal mirror. To calculate the 3D information with a single omni-directional image, the points are assumed to lie in perpendicular to the ground. The infinite plane is also detected as a circle from the structure of the mirror and camera. The analytic experiments verify the correctness of theory using real images taken in indoor environments like rooms or corridors. Thus, the experimental results show the applicability to calculate the 3D geometric information using single omni-directional images.

  • We propose an algorithm for extracting singular points of fingerprint image using directional information. First, we extract the candidates of singular points using Poincare index in two(lower and higher) resolutional directional images. Then we remove the false singular points using smoothing technique from lower resolutional directional image. And finally we select the singular points in higher resolution corresponding to those in lower resolution. The possible missing points in lower resolution are found by computing Poincare index algong the proposed small curve. And the reliable points are selected from analysis around them. We also propose a method for segmentation of fingerprint as preprocessing step to enhance the computational speed and the performance of system.

  • Topology management, which includes neighbor discovery, tracking and updating, is a key area that need to be dealt with appropriately to increase network performance. The use of directional antenna in Wireless Mesh Networks is beneficial in constructing backbone networks viewing the properties of directional antenna. The backbone links must be robust to obtain better network performance. In this paper, a simple yet effective topology protocol is presented that performs well compared to its predecessors. Our protocol constructs the topology with the constraints in the number of links per node. The full topology is constructed in two phases. The resultant topology is termed as Web-topology. The topology formed is robust, efficient, and scalable.

  • In this paper, we presented a novel structure of microstrip directional coupler for realizing the high directivity characteristic and tight coupling. The achievement of the high directivity with microstrip configuration was carried out by matching the even and odd mode effective phase velocities. By using 2-dimensional finite element (FE) calculations, the phase velocity for each mode and design parameters were extracted for given dimensions. Based on the extracted design parameter with phase-matched condition, we designed and fabricated 3dB and 4.7dB directional coupler at 2.0GHz. Experimental results of microstrip coupler show good performance with excellent isolation characteristics.

  • This paper analyzes the benefit of using directional antennas against eavesdropping attack in millimeter wave (mmWave)-based networks. All devices are equipped with a directional antenna or an omni-directional antenna in a single-hop communications. The probability of a device being detected by an eavesdropper is analyzed based on the exposure region of a device. The relative detection rate is introduced to represent the benefit of using directional antenna. Numerical results show that there exists an optimal number of devices that maximizes the detection probability and it varies according to the parameters such as antenna beamwidth. It shows that the use of directional antenna enables to protect the devices from the detection by an eavesdropper for almost the whole situation in mmWave band communication.

  • This paper describes a new method of directional filter-based analysis for fingerprint enhancement. Fingerprint cages can be represented by direction field of regular structure of ridge patterns. The dominant directional component of ridge plays a very important role in pre-processing steps of fingerprint image analysis such as ridge's linking and noise removal for minutiae extraction. A directional filter bank analyzes input image into directional subband images and synthesizes them to the perfectly reconstructed image. In this paper, a new fingerprint enhancement algorithm based on a directional filter bank is proposed. The algorithm decomposes the fingerprint image into subband images in the analysis stage, accomplishes an enhance procedure by processing subband images in the enhance stage and synthesizes them to the enhanced image in the synthesis stage.

  • Directional MAC protocols have drawn great attentions recently in super high speed wireless local/personal area networks due to their higher antenna gain, better spatial reuse, longer transmission range, and lower interference. Despite of these merits, directional MAC protocols suffer from deafness problem. The deafness problem occurs if a node does not answer an RTS frame addressed to it. To overcome this problem, directional MAC protocols have aimed at avoiding the deafness problem using multiple control frames or advance notice techniques or distinguishing deafness from collision. In this paper, we analyze the performance of these schemes in deafness environments with some scenarios. Through performance analysis, we compare the performance of these schemes through evaluating actual network throughput.
