  • A morphological filtering algorithm using directional information is presented. Directional filtering technique is effective in reducing noises and preserving edges. The proposed directional filtering is composed of two stage filtering processes. The opening and closing operations in the lst stage are performed for the pixels is aligned to the vertical, horizontal, and two diagonal directions, respectively. The opening operation supresses the positive impulse noises, while the closing operation the negative ones. Then, each directional result and their average value are filtered by the opening or closing operations in the 2nd stage. The averaging operation diminishes the effects of Gaussian noises in the homogeneous regions. Thus, the morphological operation in the 1 st stageremoves the impulse noises and in 2nd stage reduces. Gaussian ones. The experimental results show that the proposed filtering is superior to the existing nonlinear filtering in the aspects of the subjective quality. Also, the morphological filtering method reduces the computational loads.

  • In this study, a novel hierarchical approach is investigated to extract coronary vessel from X-ray angiogram. First, we propose to combine Decimation-free Directional Filter Bank (DDFB) and Homographic Filtering (HF) in order to enhance X-ray coronary angiographic image for segmentation purposes. Because the blood vessel ensures that blood flows in only one direction on vessel branch, the DDFB filter is suitable to be used to enhance the vessels at different orientations and radius. In the combination with HF filter, our method can simultaneously normalize the brightness across the image and increases contrast. Next, a coarse-to-fine strategy for iterative segmentation based on Otsu algorithm is applied to extract the main coronary vessels in different sizes. Furthermore, we also propose a new approach to segment very small vessels. Specifically, based on information of the main extracted vessels, we introduce a new method to extract junctions on the vascular tree and level of nodes on the tree. Then, the window based segmentation is applied to locate and extract the small vessels. Experimental results on our coronary X-ray angiography dataset demonstrate that the proposed approach can outperform standard method and attain the accuracy of 71.34%.

  • Parameterized multichannel Wiener filter (PMWF) is a linear filter that can control the trade-off between residual noise and signal distortion using the embedded parameter. To apply the PMWF to noisy inputs, accurate noise estimation is important and multichannel minima-controlled recursive averaging (MMCRA) is widely used. However, in the case of the MMCRA, the accuracy of noise estimation decreases when a directional interference is involved into the array inputs. Consequently, the performance of the PMWF is degraded. Therefore, we propose a noise power spectral density (PSD) estimation method for the PMWF in this paper. The proposed method is based on a consecutive process of eigenvalue decomposition on noisy input PSD, estimation of the target component contribution using directional information, and exponential weighting for improved estimation of the target contribution. For evaluation, four objective measures were compared with the MMCRA and we verify that the PMWF with the proposed noise estimation method can improve performance in environments where directional interfereces exist.

  • In this research we propose the design of the Order Statistic-Adaptive Weighted Average Hybrid(OS-AWAH) filter which can suppress noise from the corrupted image sequence effectively while preserving the image structure. The proposed filter combines the desirable properties of the order static based spatial filter which can preserve the image structure while reducing noise and the adaptive weighted average based temporal filter which can adapt the filtering weights according to the amount of motion without motion estimation. Performance characteristics of the OS-AWAH filter in noisy sequences containing moving step edges are investigated throuth computer simulations and compared with the median based filters such as 3-D WM(weighted median) filter, MMF (multistage median filter), ADCWM(adaptive directional center weighted median) filter. The visual evaluations are also carried out by applyin gthe filters to the real images. The statistical analysis and experimental reslts show that the OS-AWAH filter is effective in preserving image structures while suppressing noise effectively without motion compensation preprocessing.

  • In this paper, a multi-scale local difference directional number (MLDDN) pattern is proposed for pig identification. Firstly, the color images of individual pig are converted into grey images by the most significant bits (MSB) quantization, which makes the grey values have better discrimination. Then, Gabor amplitude and phase responses on different scales are obtained by convoluting the grey images with Gabor masks. Next, by calculating the main difference of local edge directions instead of traditionally edge information, the directional numbers of Gabor amplitude and phase responses are encoded. Finally, the block histograms of the encoded images are concatenated on each scale, and the maximum pooling is adopted on different scales to avoid the high feature dimension. Experimental results on two pigsties show that MLDDN impressively outperforms the other widely used local descriptors.

  • This study proposes a bi-directional interleaved current-fed resonant converter (CRC) with reduced size of the output filter for a fuel cell electric vehicle. The proposed CRC achieves zero-current switching turn on and off of switches and diodes and makes ripple current of the output capacitor theoretically zero. As a result, the cost and volume of the output capacitor are significantly reduced. The two-stage power conversion technique is also applied for wide input and output voltage range operations. A 2kW prototype of the proposed converter is built and tested to verify the validity of the proposed operation.

  • Acoustic based localization is essential to operate autonomous robotic systems in underwater environment where the use of sensorial data is limited. This paper proposes a localization method using artificial underwater acoustic sources. The proposed method acquires directional angles of acoustic sources using time difference of arrivals of two hydrophones. For this purpose, a probabilistic approach is used for accurate estimation of the time delay. Then, Gaussian sum filter based SLAM technique is used to localize both acoustic sources and underwater vehicle. It is performed by using bearing of acoustic sources as measurement and inertial sensors as prediction model. The proposed method can handle directional ambiguity of time difference based source localization by generating Gaussian models corresponding to possible locations of both front and back sides. Through these processes, the proposed method can provide reliable localization method for underwater vehicles without any prior information of source locations. The performance of the proposed method is verified by experimental results conducted in a real sea environment.

  • With continuous industrial development, the types, and amount of particulate matter (PM) have been increasing. Since 2018, environmental standards regarding PM have become more stringent. Pulse air jet bag filters are suitable for PM under the 20 ㎛ and, can function regardless of size, concentration and type. Filtration velocity and shape are important factors in the operation and design of the pulse air jet bag filters however, few established studies support this theory. In this research, numerical simulations were conducted based on experimental values and, several methods were employed for minimizing the pressure drop. In the pilot system, as the inlet duct velocity was faster than 19 m/sec, flow was not distributed equally and, re-entrainment occurred due to the hopper directional vortex. The multi-inlet system decelerated the hopper directional vortex by 25 ~ 30%, thereby decreasing total pressure drop by 6.6 ~ 14.7%. The guide vane system blocked the hopper directional vortex, which resulted optimal vane angle of 53°. The total pressure of the guide vane system increased by 0.5 ~ 3% at 1.5 m/min conditions. However, the filtration pressure drop decreased by 4.8 ~ 12.3% in all conditions, thereby reducing the operating cost of filter bags.

  • An iterative deblocking algorithm for DCT-compressed images using two-dimensional FIR filters adapted for local directionality of each block, is proposed. First, we introduce a set of simple lowpass filters, which are adapted for edges of different angles. In conventional deblocking methods based on lowpass-filtering and convex projections, a single filter is applied to a whole image. In the proposed method, on the other hand, a suitable filter is chosen out of the directional filters designed previously in every subimage (typically $8{\times}8$ block). Experimental results indicate that adaptive filtering improves PSNR at each iteration.

  • The wavelet transform was adopted as the transform for JPEG2000. However, wavelet has weakness about smoothness along the contours and limited directional information. So we use to other transform, called contourlet transform in compression. Objective quality assessment methods currently used Peak signal to noise Ratio(PSNR). But that is not very well matched to perceived visual quality. So new image quality assessment is required. In this paper, we propose a new method for image compression based on the contourlet transform, which has been recently introduced. In addition we evaluated compression image quality using PSNR and SSIM. Finally contourlet transform has a good result about images with smooth contours and SSIM is good method for image evaluation compared to PSNR.
