Since the rate and completeness of combustion in direct injection engines were controlled by the characteristics of gas flow fields and sprays, an understanding of those was essential to the design of the direct injection engines. In this study the numerical simulations of injection pressure effects on the characteristics of gas flow fields and sprays were preformed using the spray model that could predict the interactions between gas fields and spray droplets. The governing equations were discretized by the finite volume method and the modified k-.epsilon. model which included the compressibility effects due to the compression/expansion of piston was used. The results of the numerical calculation of the spray characteristics in the quiescent environment were compared with the experimental data. There were good agreements between the results of calculation and the experimental data, except in the early stages of the spray. In the motoring condition, the results showed that a substantial air entrainment into the spray volume was emerged and hence the squish motion was relatively unimportant during the fuel injection periods. It was found that as the injection pressure increased, the evaporation rate of droplets was decreased due to the narrow width of spray and the increased number of droplets impinged on the bottom of the piston bowl.
For carbon neutrality, direct-injection hydrogen engines are attracting attention as a future power source. It is essential to estimate the transient injection rate of hydrogen for the optimization of hydrogen injection in direct injection engines. However, conventional injection rate measurement techniques for liquid fuels based on the injection-induced fuel pressure change in a test section are difficult to be applied to gaseous fuels due to the compressibility of the gas and the sealing issue of the components. In this study, a momentum flux measurement technique is introduced to obtain the transient injection rate of gaseous fuels using a force sensor. The injection rate calculation models associated with the momentum flux measurement technique are presented first. Then, the volumetric injection rates are estimated based on the momentum flux data and the calculation models and compared with those measured by a volumetric flow rate meter. The results showed that the momentum flux measurement can detect the injection start and end timings and the transient and steady regimes of the fuel injection. However, the estimated volumetric injection rates showed a large difference from the measured injection rates. An alternative method is suggested that corrects the estimated injection rate results based on the measured mean volumetric flow rates.
To investigate the relation of $NO_x$ emission and consumption rate in a direct injection diesel engine with a multihole nozzle under same fuel consumption and rpm, a naphthyl ethylenediaming method on NO, emission and Tektronix oscilloscop on the indicator diagrams have been used. Comparisons of the $NO_x$ emission and fuel consumption rate made on various conditions have led to the fllowing results. 1. The higher the injection pressure in the later injection time the lower $NO_x$ emission and the fuel consumption rate have been attained. 2. By the change of nozzle hole diameter under the same injection pressure, the $NO_x$ emission was much more lowered in the small diameter than large one, but fuel consumption rate was in inverse proption to the $NO_x$ emission. 3. The effect of injection spray angle, $\frac{1_n}{d_n}$ on $NO_x$ emission, fuel consumption rate under same injection time and injection pressure was neglectable.
Today gasoline engines for vehicular application are not only faced with stringent emission regulation but also with increasing requirements to better fuel economy, while guaranteeing power density. The spray-guided type gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine has an advantage of improved thermal efficiency and lower harmful emissions. Centrally mounted high pressure injector and adjacent spark plug allow stable lean combustion due to the flexible mixture stratification. In the present study, the performance and emissions characteristics of developed spray-guided type GDI combustion system were evaluated at various excess air ratio conditions. The specific fuel consumption and nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) emissions were reduced due to the achievement of stable lean combustion under flammability limit. Multiple injection strategy was not helpful to improve fuel consumption while further reduction of $NO_x$ emissions was possible.
Stratified charge compression ignition (SCCI) combustion, also known as HCCI(homogeneous charge compression ignition), offers the potential to improve fuel economy and reduce emission. In this study, SCCI combustion was studied in a single cylinder gasoline DI engine, with a direct injection system. We investigated the effects of air-fuel ratio, intake temperature and injection timing such as early injection and late injection on the attainable SCCI combustion region. Injection timing during the intake process was found to be an important parameter that affects the SCCI region width. We also find it. The effects of mixture stratification and fuel reformation can be utilized to reduce the required intake temperature for suitable SCCI combustion under each set of engine speed and compression ratio conditions.
After the recent fabrication of diesel vehicle exhaust gas by Volkswagen, nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) and particulate matter (PM) are drawing attention as representative pollutants included in exhaust gas. When gasoline and diesel fuels are combusted through direct injection into a combustion chamber at high pressure, PM emission is actually increased. To find a solution to this problem, a basic study was conducted to derive an optimized variable for combustion of compressed natural gas (CNG) by applying CNG, acknowledged as a clean fuel, to direct injection system. The essence of this study is in the introduction of a radical ignition technology for compressed natural gas (RI-CNG) in a sub-chamber type engine. The direct injection system was applied to a sub-chamber to remove residual gas from previous combustion cycle. In addition, optimal mixer distribution was achieved by precisely setting ignition timing based on fuel injection timing and excess air ratio.
In this study, experimental approaching method was applied under and single-cylinder engine to research the performance of direct needle-driven piezo injector (DPI) for CR direct-injection. As key-point factor of this DPI that relies on direct-acting operating of injector needle, unlike conventional hydraulic-servo, its nozzle needle can be directly driven by piezo actuator. Thus, effect of direct-acting injection of DPI on diesel combustion and emission characteristics was investigated under common-rail single-cylinder direct-injection engine, equipped with three different driving mechanism, including indirect-acting solenoid, piezo and DPI system. As main results, it found that a direct-acting piezo injector has higher of IMEP. And it has higher heat release rate during premixed combustion and mixing controlled combustion phase due to its higher heat release, even though nitrogen oxide (NOx) formations were increased slightly.
Hydrogen gas fuel was applied to a small-sized two stroke engine for a mobile power source instead of gasoline fuel. Port fuel supply showed a limitation in terms of power due to the back fire at the engine intake manifold. So in this study, hydrogen direct injection system was applied to overcome this drawback by using a low pressure direct gas injector. The result from this strategy showed that hydrogen direct injection improved fuel efficiency as well as torque and power comparing to the port fuel supply system.
Although LP gas has lots of advantages, there has been limitation in application for automotive engine due to the several disadvantages, such as power decrease, complex fuel supply unit, and back fire etc. However LP gas direct injection engine has possibility to solve the problems above mentioned. LEM(Light Extinction Method) was employed for analysis of spacial and temporal distribution of LP gas which is directly injected into combustion chamber under various pressure and temperature conditions. The results from CVC(Constant Volume Chamber) were compared to those of RICEM(Rapid Induction, Compression and Expansion Machine) which simulate early- and late injection of direct injection engine. LPG fuel spray is affected by temperature and pressure in evaporation characteristics but it is more benefit to direct injection engine in every way such as, fuel distribution, evaporating speed and well wetting reduction.
Combustion of turbulent sprays in a direct injection diesel engine is modeled by the conditional moment closure (CMC) model. The CMC routines are combined with the KIVA code to provide conditional flame structures to determine mean state variables, instead of mean reaction rates. An independent transport equation is solved for each flame group with equal mass of sequentially evaporating fuel vapor. CMC calculation begins as the fuel mass for each flame group begins to evaporate with corresponding initialization conditions. Comparison is made with measured pressure traces for four operating conditions at different rpm's and injection conditions. Results show that the CMC model with multiple flame histories can successfully be applied to ignition and mixing-controlled combustion phases of a diesel engine.
