The mechanical behavior of soil and soil-rock mixture is investigated via the discrete element method. A non-overlapping combination method of spheres is used to model convex polyhedron rock blocks of soil-rock mixture in the DEM simulations. The meso-mechanical parameters of soil and soil-rock interface in DEM simulations are obtained from the in-situ tests. Based on the Voronoi cell, a method representing volumtric strain of the sample at the particle scale is proposed. The numerical results indicate that the particle rotation, occlusion, dilatation and self-organizing force chains are a remarkable phenomena of the localization band for the soil and soil-rock mixture samples. The localization band in a soil-rock mixture is wider than that in the soil sample. The current research shows that the 3D discrete element method can effectively simulate the mechanical behavior of soil and soil-rock mixture.
The strengthening of concrete structures in situ with externally bonded carbon fiber is increasingly being used for repair and rehabilitation of existing structures. Because carbon fiber is attractive for this application due to its good tensile strength, resistances to corrosion, and low weight. Generally bond strength and behavior between concrete and carbon fiber mesh(CFM) is very important, because of enhancing bond of CFM. Therefore if bond strength is sufficient, it will be expect to enhance reinforcement effect. Unless sufficient, expect not to enhance reinforcement effect, because of occuring bond failure between concrete and CFM. In this study, the bond strength and load-displacement response of CFM to the concrete by the direct pull-out test(the tensile-shear test method) were investigated using the experiment and the finite element method analysis with ABAQUS. The key variables of the experiment are the location of clip, number of clips and thickness of cover mortar. The general results indicate that the clip anchorage technique for increasing bond strength with CFM appear to be effective to maintain the good post-failure behavior.

The simplified method drawing the S-N curves in welding joints of the cover plates, the transverse stiffners and the gusset plates of the plate girders by calculation and its computer program without the direct fatigue tests, was established. And the method was applied to the Young- Dong Great Bridge, the 3 th Han River Bridge and the Kang Chon Bridge. Before this, SS 41, SS 50, SWS 50 and SWS 58 were selected, then the compact tension specimens were made by the use of these materials, the things welded by these materials transversely and the ones longitudinally to the crack propagation direction. The fatigue tests were performed by the use of these 'specimens, and the values of material constants c and m were obtained. By these results the followings were obtained. It was showed that the fatigue: strength in the case of the cover plates was much lower than in the case of other two cases. It was showed that, in the case of the cover plates with the cover plates thicker the fatigue strength was lower, but besides this the fatigue strength was not much influenced by the size of specimens. It was showed that in the difference from this the fatigue strength was sensitively influenced by the values of c and m. It was showed that in accordance with the lower values of c and m the fatigue strength was fairly higher, in accordance with the lower values of m the gradient of the S-N curves was abrupter. It was considered that if such data were accumulated continuously, in the near future the basic pattern used availably in providing the indicater of the fatigue design of the plate girders, and presuming the life-proof of the existing plate girders.
The characteristics of tensile strength of fiber-reinforced grouting (cement paste) injected into rocks or soils were studied. A tensile strength of such materials utilized in civil engineering has been commonly tested by an indirect splitting tensile test (Brazilian test). In this study, a direct tensile testing method was developed with built-in cylinder inside a cylindrical specimen with 15 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height. The testing specimen was prepared with 0%, 0.5%, or 1% (by weight) of a PVA or steel fiber reinforced mortar. A specimen with 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height was also prepared and tested for the splitting tensile test. Each specimen was air cured for 7 days or 28 days before testing. The tensile strength of built-in cylinder test showed 96%-290% higher than that of splitting tensile test. The 3D finite element analyses on these tensile tests showed that the tensile strength from built-in cylinder test had was 3 times higher than that of splitting tensile test. It is similar to experimental result. As an amount of fiber increased from 0% to 1%, its tensile strength increased by 119%-190% or 23%-131% for 7 days or 28 days-cured specimens, respectively. As a curing period increased from 7 days to 28 days, its strength decreased. Most specimens reinforced with PVA fiber showed tensile strength 14%-38% higher than that of steel fiber reinforced specimens.
In this study, laboratory direct shear tests on 37 core specimens of gneiss were performed to examine the characteristics of shear behavior on fractures by using a portable direct shear box. The multi-stage shear testing method was used and normal stress applied to specimens ranges from 5.60 to $25.67kg/\textrm{cm}^2$. On the basis of test results, the empirical equations for the shear strength on fractures were suggested. The methanical parameters that can influence the shear behavior were derived and compared between each parameter. The values of shear stiffness have a trend showing rapid increase with the increase of normal stress and joint roughness coeffident, and the average value of secant shear stiffness for all specimens is about $110.68kg/\textrm{cm}^3$ under the range of normal stress applied in this test In addition, the relationship between the length of specimen and shear stiffness is inversely correlated due to the size effect. Therefore, even the specimens with the same joint roughness coeffident show the trend of decreasing shear stiffness in case of the specimens being the longer length.

Recent studies regarding the properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT) have made remarkable progress in CNT fibers research. However no CNT fibers showed the properties of CNTs because CNTs in fibers have weak interfacial bonding with low shear modulus in the pristine form. Thus, it is upmost interest to develop and employ post-production treatments to the CNT fibers that would potentially improve their properties. In this study, post-treatments resulted in improvement of strength of CNT fibers up to 40%.

The Ni-Al anodes of the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) with three different structures were successfully fabricated in order to reduce the thickness of the anode down to 0.3 mm; one was the non-supported anode made by a conventional tape casting method, and others were the supported anodes made by lamination or direct casting on the nickel screen. It was seen from the physical analyses and cell operation that the supported thin anodes made by direct casting showed good mechanical strength and cell performance because of a good contact between the anode materials and the support. The single cell using the above anode showed the cell voltage of 0.858 V at the current density of 150$mA/cm^2$ with the nitrogen cross-over of only 0.6% at the operation time of 1,000 h, which was similar to the performance of the conventional thick (0.7 mm) anode. The ability to utilize a thin configuration of anode should cut down the amount of nickel alloy and consequently reduce its manufacturing cost.
Structural members using ultra high strength concrete which usually used with steel fiber is designed with guidelines based on several investigation of SF-RPC(steel fiber reinforced reactive powder concrete). However, there are not clear design method yet. Especially, SF-RPC member should be casted with steam(90 degree delicious) and members with SF-RPC usually used with precast members. Although the most important design parameter is development method between SF-RPC and steel reinforcement(rebar), there are no clear design method in the SF-RPC member design guidelines. There are many controversial problems on safety and economy. Therefore, in order to make design more optimum safe design, in this study, we investigated bond stress between steel rebar and SF-RPC according to test. Test results were compared with previously suggested analysis method. Test was carried out with direct pull out test using variables of compressive strength of concrete, concrete cover and inclusion ratio of steel fiber. According to test results, bond stress between steel rebar and SF-RPC increased with increase of compressive strength of concrete and concrete cover. Increasing rate of bond stress were decrease with increase of compressive strength of SF-RPC and concrete cover significantly. 1% volume fraction inclusion of steel fiber increase the bond stress between steel rebar and SF-RPC with two times but 2% volume fraction cannot affect the bond stress significantly. There are no exact or empirical equations for evaluation of SF-RPC bond stress. In order to make safe bond design of SF-RPC precast members, previously suggested analysis method for bond stress by Tepfers were evaluated. This method have shown good agreement with test results, especially for steel fiber reinforced RPC.

It is important to enhance the safety of ship structures as much as possible in order to prevent the disastrous collapse of structures. In fact, the strength problem of structures is closely related with the safety problem of structures. Recently, the direct calculation method using a rational approach based on the first principle is implemented into the structural design process instead of adopting empirical approach based on the rules. The structural designer have shown increased concern with the problem of adequacy of conventional design method based on the safety factor since it does not fully take into account some degree of variability of the applied loads on and the strength of ship structures. To deal with the analysis of structures effectively, it is necessary to have three stages being equally treated. The first one is load analysis, second one response analysis, third one safety analysis. For marine structures, most of research effort has been however put into the first and second stages. The third stage is normally done by simple procedures. Hence, the various probabilistic methods are compared in order to establish the reliability analysis techniques for ship structures. As a result, the advanced level 2 method is selected as a most effective and accurate reliability method. The validity of this method is further demonstrated by comparing the results with the conventional method for the problem of the longitudinal strength of hull girder of Ro-Ro ship.
A direct design method of three-dimensional frames using practical advanced analysis is presented. In this method. separate member capacity checks encompassed by the code specifications are not required. because the stability of separate members and the structure as a whole can be rigorously treated in determining the maximum strength of the structures. Advanced analysis accounts for geometric and material nonlinearities. The geometric nonlinearlity is considered by the use of stability function. The material nonlinearity is accounted for using CRC tangent modulus and parabolic function. The load-displacements predicted by the proposed analysis compare well with those given by other approaches. A design example has been presented for a 22-story frame. The analysis results show that the proposed method is suitable for adoption in practice.
