The characteristics of a rock joint which influence the stability of rock mass structures such as cut slopes and tunnels are largely controlled by the conditions of the rock joint as well as its boundary conditions. The conditions of rock joints comprise asperity strength, roughness, and filling materials. Boundary conditions can be represented by assuming that the deformability(or stiffness) of the rock mass surrounding the joints is modelled by a spring with stiffness. A new direct shear apparatus was developed in this study, which adapts a servo control system using PID algorithm. This apparatus can be used to investigate the various aspects of shear characteristics of the rock joints at conditions of constant normal stress and constant normal stiffness and so on. The test results for saw-cut teeth joints show that shear strength should be evaluated by considering its specific boundary conditions far the design of tunnels and cut slopes.
Direct shear tests were carried out on the rock joints and artificial discontinuities to investigate the influence of joint roughness on the shear strength and deformation behaviour. Single direct shear testing apparatus used in experiment was designed and manufactured. Its capacity is 200 tons of shear load, 20 tons of normal load and 50$\textrm{cm}^2$ of maximum shear area. Test samples were cement mortar with artificial discontinuity and sandstone with natural joint. Peak shear strength was increased as joint roughness or normal stress was increased, especially, linearly increased with roughness angle in cement mortar. If joint roughness angle was constant at low normal stress, shear strength was not affected by width and height of joint roughness in cement mortar. Peak shear strengths obtained from tests were larger than the values calculated by Barton's equation, and shear stiffness was increased with joint roughness coefficient.
The present study evaluates the interface shear strength between sand and different construction materials, namely steel and concrete, using direct shear test apparatus. The influence of surface roughness, mean size of sand particles, relative density of sand and size of the direct shear box on the interface shear behavior of sand with steel and concrete has been investigated. Test results show that the surface roughness of the construction materials significantly influences the interface shear strength. The peak and residual interface friction angles increase rapidly up to a particular value of surface roughness (critical surface roughness), beyond which the effect becomes negligible. At critical surface roughness, the peak and residual friction angles of the interfaces are 85-92% of the peak and residual internal friction angles of the sand. The particle size of sand (for morphologically identical sands) significantly influences the value of critical surface roughness. For the different roughness considered in the present study, both the peak and residual interaction coefficients lie in the range of 0.3-1. Moreover, the peak and residual interaction coefficients for all the interfaces considered are nearly identical, irrespective of the size of the direct shear box. The constitutive modeling of different interfaces followed the experimental investigation and it successfully predicted the pre-peak, peak and post peak interface shear response with reasonable accuracy. Moreover, the predicted stress-displacement relationship of different interfaces is in good agreement with the experimental results. The findings of the present study may also be applicable to other non-yielding interfaces having a similar range of roughness and sand properties.

The coarse grained materials which is produced in the domestic stony mountains are used as principle materials in the construction sites such as dams, ports, pavement structures and etc. Despite using of various fields like this, There is few apparatuses to experiment these materials in the country. some design parameters of the structures until these days was used from the result of former research abroad. Hereupon, We have developed the large scale direct shear test apparatus and we conduct research in order to get a shear strength of the coarse grained materials from the domestic stony mountains in Kyuong-gi, Choong-chung and Kyoung-sang province. As results of the test, it was revealed that the internal friction was ranging from $38.6^{\circ}$ to $44.5^{\circ}$ and the cohesion was from $1.1kg/cm^2$ to $1.7kg/cm^2$ depending on the local rock conditions.

The shear behavior of four different interfaces consisting of four types of geosynthetics was investigated, and both static and dynamic test for the geosynthetic interfaces were conducted. The monotonic shear experiments were performed by using an inclined board apparatus and large direct shear device. The interface shear strength obtained from the inclined board test was compared with calculated values from large direct shear tests. The comparison results indicated that direct shear tests show high possibility to over-predict the shear strength in the low normal stress range where direct shear tests are not performed. Curved failure envelopes were also obtained for interface cases where two static shear tests were conducted. By comparing the friction angles measured from three tests, i.e. direct shear, inclined board, and shaking table test, it was found that the friction angle might be different depending on the test method and normal stresses applied in the research. Therefore, it was concluded that the testing method should be determined carefully by considering the type of loads and the normal stress expected in the field with using the geosynthetic materials installed in the site.
Basic friction angles of Hwangdeung granite, Berea sandstone, Jeongsun marble, Hongcheon gneiss, Pungam shale and Eumseong sandy shale were measured by direct shear test, tilt test and pull test. Characteristics of basic friction angle and the accuracy of test methods were compared and the optimal method in measuring basic friction angle was suggested. Although basic friction angles might be measured accurately by direct shear test, the test apparatus is expensive and procedures are complicated. Tilt tests which is the suggested method for measuring basic friction angle by International Association for Rock Mechanics also provided similar basic friction angles measured by direct shear test. However, the error measured for the same rock type is higher than 7° and values by repeated measurements in one sample show different trends, such as increasing or decreasing or almost constant as measurements continued. The difference measured in one gneiss sample is higher 12°, indicating that tilt test may be not a reliable method for measuring basic friction angle. Not only pull test provided accurate and consistent results under low normal stresses, but also test apparatus is simple and inexpensive and procedure is not complicated, indicating that pull test may be the optimal method for measuring basic friction angle.
The unsaturated slope usually is stable for a long time, but fails during heavy rainfall. And the factors of the rainfall intensity exhibit significant roles because the water content and the shear stress developed along the potential failure surface will be changed by the rainfall intensity. The objective of the study presented in this paper is to analyze the relationship between rainfall intensity and shear stress of the soil slopes by applying the laboratory slope model apparatus and undrained direct shear test with rainfall intensity controlled. The soil sample was taken from the field slope of Youngdong, and particle size analysis was done. To look over the relationship between rainfall intensity and shear strength of slope, the three-dimensional relationships among shear strength, normal stress and water content of the slope soil samples are examined; those are based on the data from the TDR sensor and undrained direct shear test.

The aim of this paper was to investigating the effects of soil relative density, construction materials roughness, oil type (gasoil, crude oil, and used motor oil), and oil content on the internal and interface shear behavior of sand with different construction materials by means of a modified large direct shear test apparatus. Tests conducted on the soil-soil (S-S), soil-rough concrete (S-RC), soil-smooth concrete (S-SC), and soil-steel (S-ST) interfaces and results showed that the shear strength of S-S interface is always higher than the soil-material interfaces. Internal and interface friction angles of sand beds increased by increase in relative density and decreased by increasing oil content. The oil properties (especially viscosity) played a major role in interface friction behavior. Despite the friction angles of contaminated sands with viscous fluids drastically decreased, it compensated by the apparent cohesion and adhesion developed between the soil grains and construction materials.
Shear properies of geosynthetic/geosynthetic and geosynthetic/soil interfaces which are widely met in landfill sites were evaluated from the inclined board tests. The inclined board testing apparatus is known to reproduce the shear behavior on the low normal stress most accurately. In this study, the friction angle of each interface was estimated and the tensile force mobilized at the geosynthetic was measured as well. The test results showed that the friction angle of each interface and the tensile force of the geosynthetics depended on the amount of normal stress, the type of the geosynthetics used, and the combinations of geosynthetics and soils. In addition, the sand/geotextile/geomembrane interface system was simulated in this study, and it was observed that the tensile force developed at the geomembrane decreased due to the protection effect of the geotextile located above the geomembrane. The test results of this research was compared with those of direct shear tests published, too. Finally, by comparing the measured tensile force of the geosynthetics when the initial displacement of the box occurs, when the slope is called as the critical slope, with suggested analytic solution, the accuracy of analytic solution and the applicability to design were identified.

Most of previous studies have insufficiently investigated the shear behavior and fracturing characteristics, experimentally in respect to the change of size of tooth-shaped surface asperity such as length and slope angle in a broad range. This study investigates the influence of the length and slope angle of a tooth-shaped surface asperity on the fracturing characteristics and the interface shear strength by using direct shear test apparatus. A total of 36 interface direct shear tests were conducted by changing the three types of slope angle of surface asperity, four type of length, and three types of normal stress. The shape of fractured surface after the test was quantified by using a three-dimensional surface roughness measurement apparatus. Through the experimental test results, the characteristics of fractured shape of surface asperity according to the normal stress were investigated. In addition, fractured length and height were quantified at each slope angle of surface asperity under a certain normal stress condition.
